Social Media 's Grip On Society

Social media has guided us to believe that we need to be connected to others. “…the social media revolution has not made us feel more connected, less lonely, or replete with friends” (Barna Group). Social media has input certain beliefs into the minds of people while also taking away that time that could be spent with friends and family. Social media has allowed people to put on fronts and believe that these are the only means of communication.

Most Think that social media doesn’t have any negative sides. When you think of social media what do you think of. People who use social media don 't think about how it can beneficial or not. how about this if you asked your self what would it be like to not have social media. would you benefit from it or would you need it. Most importantly this paper is to inform the reader whether or not it’s inserting. Let start with this question, What is social media? A form of electronic communication (as Web sites and social networking) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos). Social Media comes to a point on whether social media has a positive or negative out look on people in general. Social media effects both on privacy, theft, cyberbullying, advertising and much more on social media. If do don 't believe me go on to you computer and try and look up positive view of social media and you will see that there aren’t any good thing on social media. The importance of social media and not just the positive and negative views. The important details are the Face to Face connections, Time Wasting. Isolation and privacy are another of many in the two main drawbacks of social media that you should be worried about when using it.

You are walking out of the new Star Wars movie, posting about how superb it was, when suddenly you are swooped up and thrown in the back of a vehicle. No one would have thought posting about how you were there earlier would provoke such a situation. After all, social networking is “safe” and “friendly.” Now, social media is defined as “A form of electric communication through which users create online communities to share information,” according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Social networking began in 2004 and has sky-rocketed since, due to its sense of world connectivity in a mere moment. However, with this increase, a growth in seemingly harmless threats has occurred. Users sitting behind a screen are usually unaware of how complex and diminishing social networking can be. Social media may be considered negative for society as it changes what members view as behaviorally normal, increases the risk of cyber-suicide, and reduces the amount of privacy in one’s life.

In Discipline and Punish, Foucault adopts a genealogical approach to examine the effects of punishment on society. In this paper, we apply Foucauldian analysis to information technology, especially social media on the internet. We will see that social media has both a homogenizing and a polarizing effect — while it often polarizes across social groups, it homogenizes within groups. Social media allows there to be less interaction between people of different groups while allowing norms to be spread and enforced more easily within groups.

Personally, I have always been a little late to the social media game. By the time I get the most popular form of social media, a newer, better version has been released. The first form of social media that I ever encountered was a website in 2006 called Club Penguin, where people could create penguins to represent themselves and go chat with any other penguin online at the time. While this isn’t what we think of as a social media website today, it had some similar aspects, especially in terms of the online connections. Club Penguin actually had a requirement at the time in order to protect the privacy of its younger users that involved your parent signing a form allowing you to use the website. They also had a safe chat for younger participants to use. After I got a little older and decided to move on from Club Penguin, my parents had me delete my account in order to prevent any potential privacy issues when I no longer used the website. I joined Facebook in December of 2009, and was once again a little later on the boat than everyone else. While I used it for a time, I found it rather boring after a couple years of use. Currently, I use it a lot more because I am in a sorority and Facebook is one of its main forms of communication. I also like that it connects me to friends and family from home. I don’t usually make the conscious decision to stop using social media, it just happens when I get bored. One of the only times I have ever intentionally stopped using a social

The more technology advances the more we seem to find different ways to communicate world wide. Daily there are many different types of apps and websites being created to share ideas, photos or feelings. It has changed the lives of many people positively and negatively. Ever since social media grew so did bullying. However there are many places bullying can happen, like in school, outside of school, work, or home. There are two different types of bullying, verbal and physical. It can have a small or big impact, depending on the person. Many people will say that the main causes of bullying today is social media because it allows people to communicate with others not having to be face to face and anonymously making it easier to bully others. Although some may argue that social media causes bullying, the truth is that bullying is actually caused by overexposure of private life, the victim becoming the bully, and lack of supervision .

At the dawn of the millennium, a new social issue began to surface. As the internet rapidly gained international popularity, new branches of it were created. Currently, Social media dominates the internet world. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines social media as, ¨forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)” (www.merriam-webster.com). The sudden rise of social media’s popularity sparked countless debates on how it affects our society. According to statistics, one out of four people in the world today use some type of social media, whether it be instagram, facebook, twitter, or more (Whiteman). Numerous studies were released on how social media is impacting the lives of people worldwide. The overwhelming evidence proves that social media, overall, affects people in a negative way.

In recent years, the world has changed by modern technological developments. People in these days are living real revolution and changes that affect in somehow their life. Social media has contributed to link parts of this wide world to each other, and paved the way for all people exchange views and ideas. In addition, social media sites are considered the most widespread on the Internet because of its characteristics that made it different from other websites. Because of social media, people has become living in small town. They do not need to travel in order to getting informations or news. Social media has created easier way to achieve communication between individuals and groups.Social media websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace , High Five, Tagged and YouTube have allowed people to exchange video clips, photos, share files and perform immediate talks and direct communication and interaction between the audience. Despite of advantages of social media that offer to its users, there are some disadvantages that may overcome those advantages. There are a lot of severe criticisms that social media faced because of its negative impact on individuals, families and society. Steal information, break the personal privacy, wasting a lot of time and isolation from people are some of problems that people have faced because of social media. People have divided into two group toward this issue. Some people think that social media has contributed to make their life better.

With every year that passes our society inches closer and closer to a zombie apocalypse of our creation. There is no solid information that proves the use of social media at a young age to be damaging. There is also no information proving that it 's an advantage in any way as well. Social media is meant to connect a person with their friends and what 's going on in the world, but anyone can easily misuse their social media accounts. Having a social media account of any kind is a strong disadvantage not only to a child individually but to the future of our society as a whole.

In this technological age, it is apparent that social media has become the main gateway to connect and interact, not only with our friends and families but also with the world around us. Using social media, including social networking sites, is now an essential part of everyone’s life. Yet, what often begins as a harmless virtual habit can hasten into a damaging and intruding one. Along with the convenience social media has brought, it also negatively affects people’s lifestyle, relationships, and self-esteem to the extent that it has become too invasive.

Algorithm has become a term that is constantly intertwined with social media. Online platforms have become a place where archives and algorithms are used to provide us with content as well as a platform for users to participate and share information (Louw & Carah, 2015). Algorithms are used to connect people to the content that interest them without the need to search for it on their own (Hallinan & Striphas, 2014). Charlie Brook’s Black Mirror episode, Be Right Back (2013), has triggered us to think about how the information that we share on social media is archived and used to create customised forms of content and continuously engage us on media platforms. In this essay I will be discussing key ideas drawn from the episode. Firstly, databases are created from archives which grow as participation of users increase over time. Secondly, the information is made useful by sorting and analysing them with algorithms to create customised content for users. Thirdly, personalisation of content has benefits, however, it raises some consequences on the society. I will further illustrate the ideas from real world examples such as Netflix and Facebook.

Everyone have heard the saying “too much of a good thing, can be bad”, the meaning is self-explanatory. However, the statement is true, just thinks about it. Food is good, but too much is bad. Social drinking is good, but too much a person becomes an alcoholic. Social media started as a good idea, but even too much social media can become bad for a person. Society had reached a point where it is not necessary to have human contact in order to have a relationship. Instead of calling and talking to someone, people just chat through the internet or text message. People lost the art of conversation with today’s technology. Facebook launched in 2004 and has become a mega company. Last year, the company had 845 million users, revenue was $3.7 billion, and the estimated value of the company is $100 billion. There are negative and positive effects of social media since the launched of Facebook in 2004. The great debate is: have Facebook plays a positive or negative impact in society?

In the past decade, the development of vast social media networks has improved our communications and interactions. These networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, are essential to how information is shared and criticized. The Social Media Handbook defines social media as “networked information services designed to support in-depth interaction, community formation, collaborative opportunities and collaborative work” (Hunsinger, 2014 p.1). Having an account or profile on these sites is more than a social norm; it is a requirement to staying involved in our world. Being present on social media is a must for our youth to keep up-to-date with daily events and the lives of their peers. However, social media networks are negatively influencing younger generations by impacting their relationships, causing stress and dysfunction. They damage how youth view themselves, perceptions which are detrimental to self-esteem and mental health. Today’s youth take advantage of what social media offers but suffer the impact from its misuse.

With the way the world is nowadays, there are numerous factors that can contribute to the way a person can view themselves. Some of those factors are social media, advertisements, television, and society. Each of them is very different, but all can greatly affect one’s self- image. One of Sherry Turkle’s main points in her writing was that social media can cause someone to stress for numerous reasons. Jean Kilbourne states in her writing that advertisements can tell someone how to view themselves or have an influence on the way they act. Bell Hooks explains how television can affect how someone views their economic status and how their economic status can make them feel about themselves. Social Media is meant for people to connect and socialize with each other, it is not meant to cause stress or pressure on someone for small reasons. Advertisements are meant for stores to promote their business and increase sales, but can sometimes be misinterpreted by people. Television is meant for leisure and entertainment, not meant to be taken serious and make someone feel bad about themselves. Males and females need to consider how social media, advertisements, television, and society can affect the way they see oneself.

Social media is a growing aspect and trend of the current generation. Currently there are 1.73 billion users over the world. As social media users ourselves, we are well aware of the many great aspects of social media, but also know there are some negative outcomes. This then led to the exploration of how social media effects society through studying texts. In each scenario the characters were affected in different ways, as well as the people around them. The texts studied are Ender’s Game, The Social Network, Cyberbully and Trust. In some of the texts positive aspects have arisen from the result of social media whereas in other extreme cases the result of social media has been extremely harmful.
