Proposal: Negative Effect of Social Media “We don’t have a choice on whether we DO social media, the question is how well we do it.” (Erik Qualman) Social Media has made it easier to connect with people around the world. Social Media has the ability to be utilized for different purposes. Connecting with family and friends, raising money for Go Fund Me accounts, and even reading about news that’s happening around the world. When did something that was created to be a major technological advancement in our society, turn out to be an even larger problem? Although Social Media was created for a positive reason, it has become more problematic for our society due to cyberbullying. The first social media site to exist was SixDegrees.com. It existed from 1999-2001. Since then, there have been numerous sites like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram that allow people to communicate with each other. These sites let individuals connect with each other without any face to face interaction. Because of this, it is easier for people to hide behind a fake profile to attack or exploit individuals. Bullying has always been an issue in our schools and community, but it is increasing due to easier access to their victims, “Kids who are being cyberbullied are often bullied in person as well. Additionally, kids who are cyberbullied have a harder time getting away from the behavior.” (StopBullying.Gov)
I already know that bullying has always existed. I need to find out the
People today would be surprised to know that social media has not been around forever. In fact, even more surprising is the realization that people did not really even have or use cell phones almost twenty years ago, and in those days cell phones were only used for calling. We have come a long way. Now, the whole world is in the palm of our hands, or in our cars, or on our wrists. Possibly the greatest thing to come out of this drastic evolution is social media. Social media is where everyone can keep up with family, check in with friends, and share their big time experiences with the rest of the world. However, it has opened up many, many more doors than ever intended, both good and bad. Social media has ironically turned people less social, provided an easy outlet for people to bully and point out insecurities, but also has changed the way we receive important information and news.
Probably one of the more prevalent arguments in the past five to ten years is that of the effects of social media. Is it something we should avoid? Does it affect our personal lives? Is it a detrimental or advantageous tool for society? There’s a wide variety of opinions on the matter, and while many arguments have been made defending (and attacking) both sides of the controversy, research and experiences show that social media is an invaluable asset to our lives today.
Erik Qualman once said, “We don't have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it?” (Qualman, Erik). This quote clearly states that social media has become a part of today's society and that avoiding it would be nearly impossible without total isolation. The quote also ask a rhetorical question that simply queries, how properly do we use social media? Qualman made it obvious that we’re not being as effective as we should be on social media. Social media began it’s thriving point, with the 21st generation, around 2005 when the website Facebook was created. At that point and time, the website was mainly for communication purposes. Whereas now, all social media has formed into an entertainment center. Unfortunately, the original intentions of social media have reached an ultimate downfall. Social media can be used in several harmful ways; such as, the unintentional way, the intentional way, and the way that people tend to forget about.
When there is such a rise in social media, people are able to say what they want because they feel safer than they would in person, which can lead to a rise in cyber-bullying.
Bullying is a huge issue in our society that occurs too often, especially in twenty seventeen. It can happen anywhere; whether it’s at school, at the park, etc. Ever since social media was created, a new form of bullying has been established. This form of bullying is a form of harassment using electronic contact (Social media, texting, etc.) that causes physical and emotional distress. This form of bullying is known as Cyberbullying; a major type of bullying now days that continues to overrule the online world. First off, by having social media, cyberbullies are able to reach anonymous people within seconds, making the victim an easy target for the bully. This can lead to online problems as well as the bully making the victim feel powerless. Researchers have found that thirty four of youth have been cyberbullied as well as being in danger online, and when do the math, it is more kids being hurt than we think. Secondly, cyberbullying on social media can lead to low self-esteem. After being bullied, whether
Cyberbullying has been on the rise in the past years because of the rise in the usage of social media. People tend to go to social media with positive intentions, but not everyone’s intentions are positive. Social media can bring what usually takes place at school to the household. For bullies, cyberbullying requires less physical contact and their bullying
These days bullying isn’t just taking place at school on the playground, or in the hallways, it is taking place online. Today, and in recent years kids and young teens will only face more and more bullying as things evolve with social media, things like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are only going to become increasingly popular and new platforms will be made as well. Bullying affects people so much that it can
Cyber bullying, however, is also very harmful. Social media sites take up a huge part of people’s lives, and Facebook is arguably the most valuable social media platform for expanding one's reach. “Social media is showing beautiful images and getting people engaged in conversation and giving people a sense of who [your cause] is and why you’re doing what you are (Engage).” With close to 1.2 billion active users (Facebook), Facebook offers unfiltered direct access to the world. Unfortunately it is also an open
Cyber-bullying can be broadly defined as any form of harassment or intimidation that takes place online (O’Dea & Campbell, 2012, p. 212). According to O’Dea and Campbell (2012), approximately one in three teens experience some form of cyber-bullying throughout their lives (p. 212). In their study, O’Dea and Campbell (2012) found that this number of teens (out of 400 study participants) report “multiple feelings of victimization, embarrassment, or harassment” (p. 212). One of the most significant issues with cyber-bullying is that this activity reaches a much wider audience than typical face-to-face bullying (O’Dea & Campbell, 2012, p. 212). This means that the victim of bullying may feel escalated feelings of shame and social isolation, as the person bullying can send their negative messages to as many people as he or she chooses (O’Dea & Campbell, 2012, p. 212). Cyber-bullying generally takes on two different forms: Bullying from someone who the victim knows, or from a complete stranger. O’Dea and Campbell (2012) say that online bullying can come from almost any source, given the fact that online social networks are highly open to the public (p. 212). Of course, this raises the issue of online privacy. While sites like Facebook and Twitter have privacy settings, there are very few effective measures that can fully prevent
Social media can be a platform where you interact and have fun with friends,or get picked on and stalked by adults. Bullying is a serious problem in the U.S.Because of social media people do not have to be face to face to talk. They feel they can say anything and get away with it.This is called cyber bullying when you bully someone over the internet (Social). If you put abusive posts on someones pictures that can be looked at as bullying (Social).
One of the problems that is caused by social media is cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is bullying people by misusing social media and usually leads to bullying in real life. This problem relates to me because I have seen intense fights online and series of mild cyber bullying on Ask.fm and Facebook, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for anyone who can view those fights on their news feed. Social media creates a natural habitat for cyber bullying to occur and makes it harder for the targeted victim to run off due to new online technology. Furthermore, according to the article “Cyber-Bullying, Social Media, and Parental Responsibility”, a middle school girl named Rebecca Sedwick had been
There are some who see the rapid growth of Facebook and similar social media platforms as the vehicle that enables a new form of bullying that is even more devastating than the physical bullying we’ve always seen in schools for centuries. However, this form of bullying is even more insidious because it is invisible to all but the perpetrator and the victim. The victims have no way of avoiding the attacks because it even follows them into their bedrooms when they check their social media accounts. As the internet continues to grow, cyberbullying will continue to grow along with it – if not even more quickly. It either is or will soon become a crisis of
Social media is an enormous part of our society and has opened a large window for bullying to occur. People of all ages, races, and religions are on social media and often take part in arguments where others are called vulgar names and are harassed. People are constantly being bullied on social media to the point that some view this behavior as being acceptable. In the movie Cyberbully, a girl is tormented on social media. Her classmates all thought it was acceptable and hilarious to see this girl get bullied and often joined in on the bullying. Bullying was brought to the attention of the school and police where they both said that they could not do anything about it because it happened on social media. Little did the girl know, it was her best friend who started bullying her on social media (Cyberbully). The internet allows people to say things behind a screen and even hide their identity. It is terrifying to see how cruel people are on social media and how others allow it and think it is funny. “When children, and many adults for that matter, aren’t talking to someone face-to-face, they are less likely to feel the implications of what they are really saying” (“Social Media
There is a lot of bullying that goes on in this world, a majority of it being cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is a constant problem with young kids on social media. Cyberbullying is a risk for anyone, “Cyberbullying is deliberately using digital media to communicate false, embarrassing, or hostile information about another person. It is the most common online risk for all teens and is a peer-to-peer risk” (AAP). Nonetheless, bullying is always going to happen and cyberbullying allows it to happen
Facebook and other social media platforms have brought communication across the world to a whole new level. The rise of social media has created a place for children to communicate with others in both a positive and negative manner. Although it has made a positive impact on American youth, it has also contributed and exacerbated bullying in our schools. This new form of bullying, often referred to as cyberbullying, has created an around-the-clock atmosphere where bullying can occur even when school is not in session. Many professionals have sought to address the negative aspects of social media and have worked to develop a solution to bring cyberbullying to an end.
