When I was eighteen I worked for the Williams Lake Association for Community Living and a social worker visited my worksite. I was very curious about her profession and asked her questions about the field. At that moment I wanted to go to school to become a social worker. At twenty-one, I began my journey to get my Bachelors of Social Work; but I was diverted and started a family. As time went by and I matured, my wish to work in an area that allowed me to make an impact on people’s lives and help the vulnerable through a range of different approaches never diminished; social work was an obvious field through which I could develop these skills and passions. When my girls became teenagers, I felt it was time to finish my education and pursued …show more content…
However, living in a small city my employment opportunities were limited and I had to move away from my family to work. By the end of nine months of commuting three hours back and forth, it became clear I was unhappy working in community corrections as a probation officer. I found myself questioning what I really wanted to do; I realized it was the counselling piece of my practice I was missing. This ultimately led to me back to my hometown and I found employment in the mental health …show more content…
I believe, I have developed a strong foundation as a caring and supportive social worker, who has made differences to people’s lives. I use my supervisor and cohorts for professional guidance and welcome professional critique and development in my professional approach in practical situations, and where my theory, practice and care are challenged and I am pushed out of the box to further help those in vulnerable
One thing that I have always been certain of when it comes to my future is that I want to inspire, help, and have a positive impact on as much people as possible. I want to fight for those that have no voice and create any necessary social change in my community. The field of social work would help me accomplish that. Social work is a broad field where I would be able to work with various populations of people throughout the community ranging from children to the elderly. I believe that by pursuing a master’s degree in social work I will have a sense of deep satisfaction knowing that I will be prepared to face any obstacle in my future as a social worker. I am aware that social work can be challenging but knowing that I will be able to advocate for others that are helpless and fight for social justice will be very rewarding. I first became interested in social work seven years ago, after my aunt and her husband decided to become foster parents, I would help my aunt take care of the children, and they were all very sweet kids that I will never forget. My aunt and her husband were given the opportunity to adopt a 5-year-old girl and shortly after were able to adopt her newborn sister. It was a very joyous day for our family when the adoption was finalized. During that time I met their social worker, she was a very kind and knowledgeable woman that inspired me to pursue a career in social work. I admired how passionate she was about her job and how much she enjoyed making an
I would like to study in the area of Social Work because I would like to make a greater impact with this system that has seemed to be crumbling down. This has grabbed my attention when I have learned that my friends have been in the system as a ward of the state and was in foster homes until a home was found for them. I will be honest that I haven't studied any class that has social work because I didn't think it was relevant, but with my personal feelings on how I always found that I love to help people before I help myself I would like to put my time and effort into helping young children or children of any age. I have come to realize that my passion lies in helping people who are less advantaged than I am. I am applying to Tennessee State
Through academic and personal experiences, I have formed a broad understanding of social work. I personally view the field of social work as a gigantic umbrella that overshadows a vast array of specialized careers. The social work field is made up of educated and experienced professionals that strive to make a difference in the lives of the population in which they serve. I believe social work to be a fairly
I am Dolores Hatcher and my hometown is Birmingham, Alabama. I am returning to college fulltime after a ten year absence. The university classifies me as a senior transfer / non-traditional student. I am entering my fourth semester at Alabama A&M University. My major is Social Work and it is my passion. My life has been centered on helping people. Twenty plus years ago I joined the military and after a small number of years I changed my job to Chaplain Assistant (religious support). I feel this is why Social Work as a career field suits me more than any other field. I want to work in the health care field of gerontology. Becoming a Clinical Social Worker is the ultimate dream.
Personal and Professional Statement My childhood was a big reason why I decided to join the profession of social work. My father has been dealing with an addiction to alcohol since his early twenties. It really made an impact on my life growing up. Close friends and relatives shared their similar experiences and it became apparent that my family was not the only ones impacted by the effects of alcohol.
I have decided to apply for a degree in Social Work. I see it as a future career and that it is destined for me, I am confident it will lead me towards my ambitions. It interests me that I will be working amongst other social care professions which will enable me to learn new skills along with my own profession. All through my life, I have seen myself as that individual that puts others first. It gives me a deep feeling of comfort when I am making a difference to people’s lives.
My interest in pursuing a professional career in social work came from my passion to help others. I come from a Hispanic family that migrated from Monterrey, Mexico to Houston. I remember my parents having a difficult time adjusting to a new environment. My mother’s sister was her only resource. She was her go-to for everything, and although she had been living in the United Sates for a long time, she was not aware of many of the programs available for low-income families, like us.
I have a huge desire in being a social worker and to help people in ways that other people can. I hope this brief autobiography will help you understand more about my desire in getting into this
“I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say, ‘because of you, I didn’t give up’. This quote motivates me to work hard, expanding my knowledge in Health and Social Care. This will encourage me to provide support, trust and security to those in need and allows me to put all of my skills and experience into helping someone else. For me, being a social worker will give other people an opportunity to progress as a person with the guidance from my self, as well as me being able to succeed at new challenges along the way.
For several years now, I have felt drawn to support and strengthen the communities similar to my own. From an early age I witnessed how social workers can help those struggling to find the resources they need to foster change. Although it took sometime to trace my passion for helping those in need, upon reflection, I am able to clearly see a pattern of people, agencies and institutions that provide the additional support I need to be successful. Understanding these patterns has not only impacted my experience, but also serves as the primary reason I have chosen to pursue a career in social work.
There have been many life experiences which have led me to have a desire to become a social worker. For example, all my life my grandmother taught me the value of helping others. I grew up in a household where the needs of others were put before our own. My family’s example has truly helped me to understand the importance of helping others. Social workers work with families to support them through difficult times and to ensure that vulnerable people including children and adults are safe guarded from harm.
Our lives are books, every day is a fragment of a chapter. Each page illustrates a path taken, or a battle faced. Every one of these books are unique, no two share the same story. My book may be torn, damaged by time and pain, but mended by passion. My motivation to become a social worker has been that tape and glue. It sealed every tear, and it gave every hardship a purpose. I faced these misfortunes to learn what darkness is, to be shown my capacity to be the light in other people’s lives. My life has led me to social work, it has become my purpose.
The profession of Social Work introduced itself to me at a very tender age. My personal interest in the social work field was solidified when I lived with my paternal aunt and her abusive ex-husband. At age 13, my traits of compassion, empathy and patience allowed me to mentor and guide my aunt when she was most vulnerable. For the past half decade, I have maintained a constant and consistent path to social work, with the hope to obtain my LCSW (licensed clinical social worker) and empower our most vulnerable populations in hospitals and medical centers. Over the last four years, I have immersed myself in human service and social work courses. My interaction with both fields reviled political and public policies’ issues facing our health care sector and the fragmentation between community-based support and hospitals’ treatment. In addition, a common principle that devastates me is the so-called physical from the so-called mental.
In my early twenties, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career that would help others recognize their challenges. With social work I am able to empower and liberate people to enhance their well-being, therefore, I feel I can do this in a caring and supportive way. I am continuing my college education in social work so that I can help others succeed in life, and help those in need to overcome obstacles and challenges. My goal is to provide others with the essential tools to be successful in life and become more active members of society. My primary objective is to promote lifelong achievement and happiness by employing the knowledge and insight that I have gained through my personal experience and educational development.
My decision to become a social worker was no surprise to my family and friends. I have always loved to encourage, build up, and help people in times of need; regardless if it was shelter, food, or a friend to talk too. After reviewing the NASW Code of Ethics, it is simple to understand that my core values align with becoming and being a future professional social worker. As I ponder through the idea of how I accumulated my core values, it is quite simple to trace them back to the way I was raised by my parents.
