Baking Soda History

Baking soda was founded 4 million years ago. What it basically started as was, “Trona deposits,” that are, “formed after the evaporation of great salt lakes in Wyoming, as well as in Kenya, Egypt, Venezuela and the desert of Central Asia” (Arm and Hammer). Ancient Egyptians used baking soda for cleaning their teeth, keeping their clothes cleans and keeping their meat and vegetables fresh. This happened around 2500 BC. Then in 1846, “John Dwight and his brother-in-law, Dr. Austin Church, developed bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) as a leavening agent for home-baking goods” (Arm and Hammer). They took this and developed their own company. Many people use baking soda for cooking but they also use it for cleaning their clothes, dishes, brushing their teeth and to keep the smell out of your refrigerator. In the scientific world, baking soda is known as, “a white crystalline powder (NaHCO3) better known to chemists as sodium bicarbonate, bicarbonate of soda, sodium hydrogen carbonate, or sodium acid carbonate” ("Baking Soda").

This type of experiment involves chemical reactions or how the ingredients make something by mixing together. Baking soda and baking powder also deal with acids and bases. An acid is, “a chemical substance that neutralizes alkalis, dissolves some metals, and turns litmus red; typically, a corrosive or sour-tasting liquid of this kind” (“Acid”). A base is the opposite of an acid and it neutralizes it (“Base”). Baking soda is made up of one ingredient, which is a base. Baking powder is made up of three ingredients, two of them are acids and one of them is a base (Shipman). Both are used to help the dough being baked rise.
