Solitary confinement isn’t all it’s made out to be. Altho it is a punishment it’s a humane way of inmates serving out their time. Solitary confinement isn’t at all what people say it is, it teaches prisoners to behave, and it proves to be a safe environment for the inmates through a place called the ‘blue room’. Solitary confinement may not be as “horrible and torturing” people say. Altho the mental state of inmates in solitary never improved it also did not deteriorate. Studies have shown that solitary does not cause mental deterioration, and those who did have it, had psychological illnesses going in to it. Other inmates found a form of safety and security in their confinement. What exactly does solitary do for the inmates and is it a necessity? Prisoners are given privileges such as television, more time outside, extra visiting hours. On the other hand though if an inmate chooses to act in an unwanted manner then those privileges can be taken from them. This is where solitary confinement comes in. On average an inmate in solitary confinement spends about 23 hours of their day in a cell with no windows and no contact to the outside. They are given an hour to go out to a concrete enclosed fitness room. Nadkarni conducted a study where half of the 48 inmates in solitary were shown a nature program of their choosing. They watched their show for about 45 minutes to an hour each day. This was all done in a room the prisoners called the “ blue room ”. At the end of the study statistics showed that around 43 percent of the inmates said they were “soothed” after watching that video. Moreover the staff workers even said that the inmates were much more calm after the video. The the blue room caused a 26 percent decrease in violence between the prisoners and the staff.
