Southern gothic literature is partly inspired by gothic literature. Southern gothic literature is a southern genre where the story is focused around gruesome or dreary ideas. The characters are also normally damaged, delusional or mentally ill. In the two short stories, “A Rose for Emily” and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” both have elements of southern gothic literature. In “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, one example of southern gothic literature is when the family is on their trip and they drive by their old plantation’s family graveyard, and it had six graves, which was the same amount of people sitting in the car. The six graves show that each family member will soon pass away. Another example of southern gothic literature that is seen in the short story was “The Misfit”. The misfit was seen as a murderer and horrific. He was blamed for killing his own father but claimed that he was innocent. ("It was a head doctor who said what I had done was kill my daddy but I known that for a lie. My daddy died in nineteen ought nineteen of the epidemic flu and I never had a thing to do with it. The story tells about how an antisocial woman is willing to kill someone so they will not abandon her. The story also tells about how she lives in her own delusional world. The short story’s setting is a very old town that is demolished, (It [the Grierson family house] was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies, set on what had once been our most select street But garages and cotton gins had encroached and obliterated even the august names of the neighborhood; only Miss Emily’s house was left, lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps- an eyesore among eyesores” [p
