Soldiers of the American Civil War were overwhelmed by a time where weaponry and technological developments were thriving. This brutal war changed the soldiers, both mentally and physically, and continued to have an impact throughout their entire lives. There were not only many deaths during the war, but also prior to the war as many soldiers took their own life. They would experience disturbing thoughts and events in their mind that could not be explained until they became known as mental illnesses. The exploration of psychological disorders following the Civil War improved medical diagnostic tools and the way patients were treated which transformed the treatment of mental illness by creating new ways of discovering illnesses, treating patients, and developing the foundation for the future of psychology throughout America.
Throughout the 19th century, the distinctions between the North and South in the United States were controversial. Prior to the Civil War, the North consisted of business owners and middle-class men. The South consisted of mostly farmers. The North was industrial, using railroads and factories. The South was agricultural, with mostly farms and plantations. The North paid their labor workers. The South used slaves. Not only did their opposing views on slavery and the separation of the two cultures, tensions arose that eventually led to one of the most gruesome wars in history.
Another minor step leading to the war, was a disagreement over tariffs on imports and exports. In 1828 a tariff was passed that tried to help New England manufacturers. The tariff was as high as 45% to 50% of the original European prices. The north wanted the higher tariffs so that their products could compete on the same level as foreign products which were much cheaper. Opponents of the tariff called it the tariff of abomination. Southerners strongly opposed the tariff because they exported cotton and other materials to Europe, in exchange, European goods
Northerners supported tariffs because tariffs helped them compete with British factories. The South’s economy was based on farming. Southerners imported their manufactured goods. Tariffs made imported goods more expensive for southern farmer which led to their opposition. Angry Southerners called the tariff the Tariff of Abominations. The new tariff added fuel to the growing sectional differences plaguing the young nation.
It can be said that the South began the Civil War from a winning position. They had declared their independence, formed their own country and government, and they needed only to keep what they already had. But this was a monumental task as the government was required to protect every inch of land within the Confederacy. As a new country, the Confederacy needed to demonstrate the ability to defend its own territory from external threat. Without this ability, the Confederacy could never receive the international recognition and support it needed to survive. Aside from this reason, the South also needed to protect the institution of slavery from outside interference. If the Northern armies took control of a particular Southern area, the Confederates felt that they would free all the slaves, thus destroying the entire structure of society and its economic value. Because of this, Jefferson Davis was forced to devise a flawed war strategy which attempted to preserve the entire Confederacy at the cost of concentrating his forces.
Since the Civil War brought extensive economic change to the United States, civilians in the North and South faced many economic challenges. "In the North the arms, metalworkings, boot making, and shipbuilding industries boomed, but the scarcity of cotton caused widespread layoffs and closures in the textile industry" (Keene, 391). Even though workers' salaries rose by forty percent, prices increased even faster, resulting in inflation that averaged fifteen percent. Despite the North's economic hardships, the problems the South faced were far worse. "The Southern economy was hit hard by the cessation of trade with the North and Europe due to the Union blockade" (Keene, 391). Southern industry and agriculture were limited by persistent
While the United States worked hard to set up a working government, a heavily debated topic was states’ rights. “When high protective tariffs were passed by Congress in 1828 and 1832, South Carolina, led by John Calhoun, threatened to nullify them, making them null and void within that state” (What Caused the Civil War). Nullifying the law means that the state would ignore it. The Southern states were angered by the tariffs because they benefited the North and made it more difficult for the South. Hinston Helper states, “It is a fact well known to every intelligent Southerner that we are compelled to go to the North for almost every article of utility and adornment, from matches, shoepegs and paintings up to cotton-mills, steamships and …; that almost everything produced at the North meets with ready sale, while at the same time, there is no demand, even among our own citizens, for the productions of
John Quincy Adams, as well as other statesmen, were keen to keep the Europeans out of the Western Hemisphere and thought America and President Monroe had to assert authority over the continent, which led to the enforcement of the Monroe Doctrine (Doc 5). The doctrine declared countries could no longer colonize the continent and would take any attempt to do so as a threat, and in exchange they would stay out of European affairs. This isolationist approach was supported by the industries of the North, as the heavy charges placed on European imports protected their income and allowed them to prosper. The Southerners were not as fond of the tariffs as their economy was negatively impacted, they had to pay higher prices for the goods they needed and the reduction of British imports hurt their ability to export their main area of revenue, cotton. Once again the North and South had conflicting desires and it was hard to find any trace of good feelings between the two. They were both trying to look out for themselves, as separate areas, and national unity was struggling to gain
Britain therefore determined American industry at this point due to its need of cotton and 'It was the behaviour of prices that decided the way southern development was to take place.'
Before the Civil war occurred, there were numerous economical reasons to why the South should have been able to secede. One of these examples is the tariff law. The importance of the tariff law was to collect money from both the North and the South to raise money funded for projects and such for the
The Early Republic represented a paramount period in the United States where the government had to face various challenges with no previous experience. During this time, tensions were rising between the Northern and Southern states; Their differing views on slavery, extent of government authority and taxes led to skirmishes and even a war. The early 1800s was filled with domestic problems which threatened the stability of the nation. Through innovative solutions, the American government managed to solve a majority of them including issues regarding slavery, political parties and taxation.
many saw this as a required fee in order to assure the economy of the United States, the South saw in different way. This "protective tariff" wasn’t anymore than an extra, unneeded cost hurt that did more harm than recent good. All section of the United States voted for this Tariff in the House of Representatives, in exception of the South. (34 of the 57 representatives from the South voted up against the Tariff of 1816.) At this point of period, the South was flourishing from their cotton business and exporting cotton to different parts of the globe. By establishing this tariff, they would have to pay an extra payment to the federal government in order to import expensive goods from foreign countries, such as England and France. This increase
The South was viewed by many in the United States and elsewhere as a robust, self-sufficient economy (Surdam, 2001, p. 1). It produced much of the world's supply of cotton and Texans bragged that their cattle could feed the world. What the South lacked in manufacturing was compensated for by the immense wealth produced from raw cotton, cattle, and corn exports. Obviously, the predictions that the South could survive a war with the North due to its economic self-sufficiency were wrong. This essay analyzes the possible reasons for the failure of the Confederacy to win the Civil War.
In 1861, a horrific war began. Nobody had any idea that this war would become the deadliest war in American history. It wasn’t a regular war, it was a civil war opposing the Union in the North and the Confederate States in the South.. The Civil War cost many people’s lives on the battlefield and beyond. In addition it cost an extreme amount of money for the nation which possibly could have been avoided if the war had turned to happen a little differently.
Happiness is often mistaken for a simple concept at first glance, even though it is often responsible for a human’s actions, thoughts, and even perspective on numerous topics. Different social factors come together from almost every portion of life, to create one’s happiness ranking. A strategy like this can be used by a single person, but it also has the ability to be used to analyze a certain place or country. One country that’s currently dealing with a significant amount of issues, is Lebanon. Many of the social factors looked at as a source of happiness, are either missing or being threatened by radical groups within the country. War over territory on the southern border has been a consistent problem within the country for decades, leading to a significant amount of destruction and tension between the Lebanese and their neighbors. Not to mention, many major cities like Beirut have been plagued by the country’s inability to properly remove waste and control the homeless population. Maybe the biggest uproar taking place in Lebanon right now, is the youth unhappiness with religion and the impact it has on society. On the other hand, the positives are not exactly where they should be. Lebanon has been fortunate to have fertile land and great tourist destinations. On top of that, the country is still working towards creating an equal playing field for both men and women. It has been a rather slow process, but changes are coming. Even some of the industries within the country
