The Success of Southwest Airlines

The Beginning
In the mid 1960’s, Rollin King, an owner of a small commuter air service from San Antonio Texas realized the inconvenience and expense of travelling between San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston. Through the urging of his banker and his own vision, Rollin King decided to start an intrastate airline. King first pitched his plan to Herb Kelleher – a San Antonio attorney who had performed previous legal work for King. Cleaning, maintenance, unloading, boarding, and fueling had to be completed in 10 minutes or less. The airline industry said it could not be done, however Southwest’s culture had already developed a ‘do what it takes’ culture and they were able to accomplish the impossible. The consistency of Herb Kelleher’s determination to not give up a fight and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lamar Muse’s trial-and-error approach led Southwest Airlines to the beginning of what would be a highly successful airline.

Success Continues
Today, not much has changed from the initial Southwest culture. Southwest has grown to become the nations’ largest domestic carrier by number of passengers carried. 24-year veteran Gary Kelly, who started out as the company’s Controller, and later Chief Financial Officer (CFO) has now become the current Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer. Throughout his 24 year tenure, Gary has worked closely with co-founder Herb Kelleher and President Emeritus Colleen Barrett to build the airline up to what it is today.
Currently, the airline serves 72 cities in 37 states. Most of these cities are still the smaller point-to-point destinations in which Southwest originally found success shortly after the inception of the company. Chicago Midway, Las Vegas, Baltimore, Phoenix, and Denver are currently the top 5 locations by number of daily departures.
