Spam is a brand name for a canned meat product containing ham, pork, salt, flavourings, and preservatives that are mixed and cooked under vacuum pressure. The product was made in 1937 and it became popular around WWII where it was recognized by the United States and Russian soldiers. After the war, the product became popular and well known around the world. Over the years consumers wondered about the product, and if it was healthy because of the simple ingredients. This issue made a big difference on the popularly of the product. In today’s society, canned food has become a big issue whether it is healthy or not because of the chemicals and preparation. There are many reasons why Spam is not healthy, and some main reasons are the …show more content…
The nutritional information labeling on Spam is very disturbing it shows that is not healthy because a single serving (two thin slices) contains 30 percent of daily saturated-fat and that is a great amount of fat. Since canned food is now being shipped all over the world, most people tend to forget that it needs to be taken care of especially when it is meat. Many people do not know that there is a certain time limit when the food is opened from the can. Another reason is that consumers spend more money by purchasing Spam products than other healthier sources of protein available at any grocery store. There are many types of meats that are healthy for example boneless chicken.
Lastly, for many years Spam has been treasured for its convenience to many families but canned food contain BisphenolA, many companies began using BisphenoalA in metal can linings since 1960s. This chemical causes serious health problems such as heart disease and diabetes. In most grocery stores canned foods are not placed in a cool place which causes the food a big risk for the food to spoil. When food is stored for a long period of time there are high chances of loosing nutrients. With Spam, in a single serving it contains about 16 grams of fat, 33 percent of sodium and a great amount of cholesterol which it is hard
Everywhere you look there is a rising concern for health from these added ingredients. Let’s take a look at tomatoes, Fresh tomatoes are considered to be very good for you and aid to help prevent cancer, the canned ones not so much. Canned processed foods are a concern because of the material the can is made of. The lining of almost all canned foods contain a chemical called BPA. Studies show that BPA affects the way genes work inside the brain. Tomatoes are exceptionally dangerous due to the high acidic level. The acid reacts to the BPA making the chemical transfer into the tomatoes instead of staying in the lining of the can. This is just one example and one type of processed canned foods, there are thousands more. America is the most over fed, under nourished country
The state of the American Health in the U.S has become an increasing concern of many Americans. An article entitled “11 Facts about American Eating Habits,” addresses the state of food in the U.S by stating, “Healthiness of the food we eat decreases by 1.7 percent for every hour that passes in the day.” Experts and scientists in the U.S has raised questions about regarding the different ways food is now being produced. While individuals are usually not aware of the ingredients that food contains, many people continue to have unhealthy eating habits. In the past few decades, food production has included numerous artificial ingredients that are said to be the cause of various health problems. Various artificial ingredients that are commonly
Eating healthy is very important for people, and modern supermarkets can make this difficult with thousands of new products flooding the market every year. Countless numbers of the products that hit the market are considered food, nevertheless is it the food needed for proper nutrition? Most of the food that fills up the supermarket shelves each year isn’t the healthy real food our bodies need to get proper nutrition. Several edibles obtainable appear healthy or normal enough to call wholesome. Think about processed deli meats, for example, particularly the ones that say “no preservatives” on them. Several of the processed meats you find contain nitrates, a preservative. Nitrates are viewed as harmful, so people don’t want them in their sandwich meats. Hence some deli meat companies made their product more appealing to the public, by labeling “no preservatives.” This
With having true genuine intentions in eating healthy people fall into the ideas advertised by cooperation’s that their products are healthy. Food corporations protect themselves through ingredient secrecy and even through the FDA because they are not required by law to disclose their ingredients; however, the chemicals used need to be considered by the FDA to be Generally Regarded As Safe (Schlosser 25). People should take responsibility in the research of the food products they consume; therefore, allowing an individual to be wise and informed of what their really consuming. Maybe, instead of cutting corners in trying to eat healthy with false idealistic advertisement consumers should consider eating fresh fruits, vegetables, and cooking ingredients. Consumers should like the author Pollan suggested in his rules of thumb: avoid food products unfamiliar, unpronounceable ingredients, and products containing more than five ingredients (Pollan
It is filled with things like fat and salt that is unhealthy. The author says, "Ingredients such as salt, sugar and fat are sometimes added to processed foods to make their flavour more appealing and to extend their shelf life, or in some cases to contribute to the food's structure, such as salt in bread or sugar in cakes." The author also says, "These foods can also be higher in calories due to the high amounts of added sugar or fat in them." Processed food is full of sugar which is very bad for the body since some people cannot dispose the sugar
“They (Food Production Corporations) may have salt, sugar, and fat on their side, but we, ultimately, have the power to make choices. After all, we decide what to buy. We decide how much to eat.” (Moss 346). In today’s society, junk food needs no introduction as everyone enjoys the taste of junk food because it is fast, tasty, and affordable but not everyone knows what all goes into their food. Over the years the food industries have drastically changed how food is produced and manufactured. Moss reflects upon the motivations and practices by the food industries which have transformed the American food supply by the use of the three key ingredients, salt, sugar, and fat. Through Michael Moss’s use of rhetorical appeals in his book Salt, Sugar, Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us, he discusses the extraordinary science behind what is considered tasty food, how multinational food companies use the key ingredients, salt sugar, and fat to increase sales and how other literary elements can help create trust between the author and audience thus increasing the effect of his arguments.
First, processed food is bad especially if there cansI is really not healthy because seattle organic restaurants noted “ canned foods that can harm you, is plastic contaminants in our canned goods. Most canned food these days have a plastic coating inside the can to supposedly keep the food, vegetables, and fruits – fresh.”[ 5 reasons why you should avoid Canned food; All because they are harmful]. Yes it may keep them more fresh that circumstances without it being keep the inside a metal object, but this comes at the price of harming you and others. Because of the fruits being in this container for so long can cause them to roughtin. Packaged and bagged bags are mostly frozen food that stays in the refrigerator in markets for sometimes and who knows how
In the article “How Junk Food Can End Obesity,” the author David H. Freeman demonstrates how so many people are very poorly informed on the facts of processed foods and how bad it is for one’s health, he goes on to explain how wholesome foods are supposed to be primarily better for the health of an individual, but that is not necessarily true. In our society, we loudly blame processed food companies mainly directed at fast food companies, for the sole contribution to the increasing rate of obesity. Freedman argues how it is not just fast food companies that are playing such a huge factor, but also the “all-natural organic” stores, like Whole Foods, that we love so much. Its clear most American’s see “all-natural, processed free” products and there is a huge chance that we purchase that product, simply because the advertising draws us in. Another thing he does is gives great examples of how more healthy stores may actually have products that are more harmful than not. He also mentions many different articles that he has read throughout his essay to show the
Lunchables, Twinkies, potato chips, chocolate chip cookies, or even a trip to McDonald’s after school are just few of the memorable foods as a child that always seemed so exciting and delicious. As a child, I wondered why these scrumptious foods were always just a treat, but never an every day meal on my diet that I could enjoy. But what I did not know was the dirty truth behind these foods: what they are really made out of. Behind food corporation doors lies the truth about processed foods,
With this increase in the productivity of farmers, came a proliferation of food processing industries and fast food restaurants. These food processing industries and restaurants capitalized on the abundant, overly cheap commodity crops to their advantage; to make profit, and to the disadvantage of poor Americans. During processing of these commodity crops, the natural nutrients that give these foods their natural flavors are destroyed. To replace these, food additives and flavorings are added to restore their taste and prolong their shelf life. Often these chemicals contain some harmful elements that affect the way our bodies use food. These highly processed foods, dense in calories,
Many advertisements nowadays don’t advertise objects with the verity of their quality. Rather, they get someone in the famous industry to advertise their product so the people that are watching see their favorite famous person and want to buy it because they use it. When most of the people that promote it don’t use it, or it never truly works as they say, and another way they advertise is through foods.
They are now trying to receive profit from the production itself. They are seeking for for ways to increase the profit obtained during the processing of the food and they have found a way. They have decided to harmful substances to the production of the food such as antibiotics, additives, and large amount of salt. Although antibiotics help get rid of the viruses at the moment to secure more quantities of healthy food, it creates resistant infections that could be deadly due to the large amount of immunities that they have developed throughout the years of treatment. “The more a particular germ is exposed to antibiotics, the more rapidly it can develop resistance”(Sarah Halzack). Salt and additives are used to enhance the flavor of the food, but at the same time it causes people to be more sustainable to acquiring high-blood pressure, obesity, and even cancer. “Researchers agree that hypertension (high blood pressure) is rare in societies that consume a low-salt diet and more common among people who eat a lot of salt”(Anita Elash). This just comes to show how far Americans have went to be able to eat such unhealthy amount of salt. Other substances that are also found are. “BHA or BHT. Ingredients like these are added to prohibit foods with oils from going rancid, thereby increasing shelf life” (Cindy Jones Shoeman)
Ironically many toxins that are put into foods don’t have to be there in the first place. Food is labeled for cholesterol, but not for carcinogens. Canned foods are one example of concern due to the can lining. The linings of the majority of all cans are made with a chemical called BPA
nowadays, people do not know what they are eating. The majority of most Americans would not be able to pronounce the names of the ingredients listed on the package of the last snack food they consumed. Consumers “ignore certain critical questions about the quality and the cost of what they are sold: How fresh is it? How clean or pure is it, how free of dangerous chemicals? … When the food has been manufactured or “processed” or “precooked,” how has that affected its quality or price or nutritional value?” (Berry, 24) It is of utmost importance that we understand what the food that lines the grocery store shelves is actually
For decades the Fast-food industry has supplied Americans with tasty, comforting food, quickly and at a low cost. It was not until recently, when the health craze first hit America in the late 1980’s that the corporations developed a new approach to marketing health food products to fit their customer’s wants (Nielsen). The most common fast food chains, such as McDonalds and Subway, started advertising “healthier” food items on their menus to continue appealing to the general public. While fast food restaurants give the impression of offering healthy food, nutritionist studies show healthy alternatives are not as nutritious as advertised and can lead to possible calorie underestimation and overconsumption (Chandon 85). In order to
