Spanish Revolutionary War: The Spanish American War

The Spanish American War was caused by many occasions. America strongly supported Cuba and disputed Spain’s actions. The main causes of The Spanish American war was the yellow journalism, the blowing up of “The maine”, and the de lome letter. This essay will be discussing the causes and effects of the Spanish American War.

In 1823, the Monroe Doctrine was published by president James Monroe that stated that any effort of European nations to try to colonialize any parts of North America or South America would be seen as unfriendly by the United States. The expansion of the Monroe Doctrine to include Olney Corollary which said that it gave the U.S authority to mediate conflicts in its own hemisphere This corollary foreshadowed the the events of the Spanish-American War because which ended in 1898 with the Spanish ceding the Philippines and Cuba. The need for the United States to gain territory and intervene led to the war with the Philippines because after the Philippines was ceded to the United States, the Philippines didn’t want another colonial ruler so they sought independence by a war with the United States (Engel, Lawrence and Preston, 47). Imperialism caused the U.S to intervene with the Spanish which then angered the Filipino because they didn’t want a new colonial ruler. The Philippines created an opportunity to project American power into the pacific. With the Filipino leader, Aguinaldo, as president demanded independence but Washington refused so Aguinaldo declared war. The U.S didn’t want to give land away that they just received as well as the Philippines was considered a hotspot because it would allow the U.S to refuel on their long journeys back from Asia

The Spanish-American War was considered short lived and relatively mild in terms of American casualties compared to the many wars that our nation has fought. However, it served as a historical marker that set the imperialistic momentum of our nation. It played a significant role in our nation’s strategic move towards acquiring trade routes and further strengthened our naval power. Throughout my research paper I will touch on what led to the Cuban revolution against Spain, America’s political climate at the time, and why our nation eventually decided to intervene and aid the Cubans in their fight for independence.

The Spanish American war started in 1898 and was a fight for Cuba’s independence which resulted in 379 American casualties in combat. The Spanish American War was justified because of the Monroe Doctrine, Correspondence between the United States and Spain, and the Platt Amendment, which were all created to protect American morals and freedom.

The Spanish-American War began as a humanitarian effort to free Cuba from Spain’s colonial grasp and ended with the United States itself acquiring territory overseas and fighting a dirty guerrilla war with Filipino nationalists who, like the Cubans, sought independence. Behind the contradiction stood the twin pillars of American foreign policy: The Monroe Doctrine made Spain’s presence in Cuba unacceptable, and U.S. determination to keep open the door to Asia made the Philippines attractive as a stepping-stone to China.

The American people sided more towards the Cubans then with Spain within during the war. There was a big difference between the Cubans and the Spanish people. The Cubans were very poor people who did have much, while the Spanish controlled everything and had everything. This upsetted many people from the poor to the rich, and the Spanish just wanted to do what was right. The War with Spain was ultimately suppose to help the other people and the government. And this War with Spain started to include the Blacks which was gonna end up making things more peaceful and an “era of good feelings”. All Spain wanted was a perfect sound of unity among the people around them without the issues of racism, etc. (document 1) As a step to fix this, the American government try to adopt a policy of neutrality to help with this issue. The Americans reached out for help, but got little in return. McKinley just wanted to help the Philippines. They were unfit for self-government as I said above, and soon as time went on, they would have an “anarchy” and would soon be misruled for so many things. According to Document 3, McKinley just wanted the Philippines to be involved in the church and one night after speaking to God, he figured it all out. He decided that all he could do was to educate them and to provide them with everything he possibly could. (document 3) A lot of the Americans were starting to believe that all the people were ready to start accepting peace and neutrality, that was still yet to come in the years to follow. America's short war with Spain in 1898 was the nation's first step on the pathway to becoming a world power. The U.S. victory brought with it the unintended possession of the Philippines and a vested interest in the politics of the Pacific region that would ultimately lead to conflict with Japan. As an immediate outcome of the war, America found itself embroiled in an insurgency in the Philippines that closely mimicked the conflict in Vietnam over 60 years later.

The Spanish-American War was in 1898. It was an issue between the United States and Spain. The war began in the Cuban struggle for independence from Spain, which began in February 1895. Spain’s harsh measures to stop the rebellion were represented for the U.S. public by many newspapers, and American sympathy for the rebels rose. Spain announced an armistice on April 9 and speeded up its new program.

The Filipino people had helped the US fight the Spanish-American War in hope to gain independence in return. However, instead of gaining independence the Philippines was annexed to the United States on December 10, 1898. When the Filipino’s had found they were going to be ruled over once again they were very unhappy, after all they had helped the US. When Aguinaldo had found out that the Philippines were going to be controlled by the US, he had declared war on the United States.

In the summer of 1898, America showed the world their capability by defeating Spain in The Spanish-American War. The outcome of the war was that several Spanish colonies fell into America’s hands and these two were The Philippines and Cuba.They made it clear that they are not going to annex Cuba so they chose The Philippines instead. Many Americans Believed annexing the Philippines was unfair and others thought it was an excellent idea because the Philippines did not know how to work for their own government. The Philippines should have been annexed by The United States because the Philippines did not have a stable government, they were weak which means that other countries like Germany and Japan would easily take The Philippines. The Spanish-American war was with Spain and America, this war occurred in 1896, it lasted only 4 months and it was focused on the independence of Cuba. There were and still are several different viewpoints as to why America ever got involved in the war with Spain. Some believe that it was a financial reason, others a race struggle, and some a political reason, but I believe it was because America wanted to stop the Spanish oppression of the natives.

The Philippines were fighting Spain for several years before America joined the war. The war took place in Cuba and on the waters of the Philippines in 1898 when the Americans joined the war. It ended with a victory for the Philippines and the Americans causing the Filipinos to receive their independence. Due to their victorious win the United States gained all of Spain’s territories. The U.S had to decide whether to give the islands back to Spain, give the Filipino their independents, or to annex the Philippines. The United States finally decided to annex the Philippines but they had to hold a treaty that needed to be signed by the U.S Sensates. The Spanish-American war was a turning point in United States history. It is the time period when the Unites States started asserting it’s power in international affairs. Spain had been one of the superpowers along with Great Britain, France and Germany. Great Britain, France, Germany and Spain had established colonies through out the world. Spain’s colonies were the closest to the United States interests, so it was only natural that tensions would start to boil between Spain and the United States. The original tensions started in Florida, which had been a Spanish colony and then spread to Cuba which was also a Spanish colony.

After the Spanish- American war, Americans took control of the Philippines after Spain ceded it to them in 1898 during the Treaty of Paris. The incident, which led to the war that started on February 4, 1899, was when an American soldier shot a Filipino soldier who was crossing a bridge to San Juan del Monte (American occupied land). Despite the fact this war has been unnoticed in the U.S, in the Philippines it is recalled but misunderstood. I thought of some reasons to why this war might have been America’s forgotten war.

The Spanish American war was a great battle in American History. Some people may ask, “What was the Spanish American war?” It was a war the started with the great Country of Spain and the little place of Cuba. Cuba wanted freedom from Spain and wanted to be independent. Spain would not allow this act, this resulted in Cuba calling in “backup” from its ally the U.S. At the time most of America wanted to fight, all except president Mckinley, he had fought in the civil war and did not like war. This postponed the Spanish American war just a little longer.
