In Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, Melinda, the main character, faces struggles in Merryweather High that the average student does not face. Melinda has been sexually assaulted by a senior boy and has never told anyone about it, which is leaving her failing classes, lonely, and depressed. As high school drags on, her lab partner, David Petrakis, helps her find the strength to speak again. He does so by encouraging her, being a friend, and inspiring her.
To begin, David helps Melinda speak again by encouraging her. In Mr. Neck’s social studies class, Melinda is failing. Mr. Neck gives out an extra credit opportunity which involves doing a report about a cultural influence. Then, Melinda decides to take advantage of this. She works very hard on the report about the Suffragettes. She gets told by Mr. Neck that she needs to do an oral presentation in front of the class. Melinda goes to David and asks for advice. Finally, it is the day of the presentation. Melinda writes down everything on the board. Once it was time, David passes out her report for everyone to read so Melinda doesn't have to speak. Mr. Neck ends up giving her a “D” and sends her to “MISS” (Merryweather in school suspension). In addition, David passes Melinda a note stating that he feels bad that her parents did not stick up for her the way his did. David then begins to give Melinda constructed criticism. He states that she got it all wrong and needs to be more like the Suffragettes. Davis tells Melinda that
