Four men stand before a door, lined up one behind another. The lead quietly and carefully checks the handle and finds it’s locked. But he doesn’t worry; he uses hand signals to call forward his universal key. The man calmly goes to the door, places and primes the explosive charge and takes a few steps back before starting the countdown. 3…2…1… The charge goes off with a sudden and thunderous boom, and within two seconds all four men are in the room making sure it is clear. When America is in need, it calls upon its soldiers to defend her. But when her soldiers hit a roadblock, or come to an impasse, or even come upon a locked door, they call upon their experts in construction and demolition, the engineers. Firstly one must go through basic training and advanced individual training. If they are enlisted as a Special Forces candidate their advanced individual training will be what is known as the Special Forces Qualification Course, or just SFQC or Q Course. (“Inside the SFQC”) If they fail to complete the course for any reason they will fall back to an infantryman. But if someone were enlisted as any other military operational specialty (MOS) they would attend basic training and advanced individual training, and the length will vary for the MOS according to Staff Sergeant Ricardo Sanchez. Q Course is nineteen days long. It includes physical conditioning, map reading, and land navigation instruction (Inside the SFQC). Upon completion of SFQC those who passed will attend Special Forces Assessment Selection, which lasts for twenty-one days. According to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service website your pay is based upon your rank and grade as well as your years of service. So if someone held the rank of Staff Sergeant (grade of E-6) and they were in the Army for six years they would get about $2,500 every two weeks (Military Pay Charts). But the army also offers allowances for housing, fuel, clothing, food, and other necessities that is separate from your pay, meaning a lot of expenses most people have the military will cover for you. Meaning more of that pay can go to whatever you want it to go to, whether it be recreation, savings, or investing. The military also offers special incentives and compensation for certain things. For example all combat MOS’ receive what is called combat arms compensation pay which gives soldiers with combat MOS’ a pay to compensate for the danger they will be put in. There is also a family separation compensation which pays soldiers for being away from their family for extended periods of time.
