This population has to have mediation because there are many who cannot speak for themselves. They need the help from a neutral person so that they can discuss complications that they may be dealing with without judgment. Today’s society is different in its thinking when dealing with people with disabilities. There had to be many changes made in its labeling, and approach when dealing with people who may have physical/mental differences. The ostracize behavior that people were known to disturb in society has changed a great deal, due to the many federal laws that have been put in place to insure the well-being of people that have disabilities. In this case the IEP is the best tool to communicate the needs of the student. This is the first step I and the special service personnel take in communication and collaboration with each other. I follow the goals and strategies that are presented in the IEP in order to meet my students’ needs. At the same time, these information helps me design lessons based on their learning disability and best reach each student. Another important part in this collaboration is to keep the case carrier inform about the student’s development, and for this part I use report forms that I email to the case carrier. Damien is sophomore and has autism spectrum disorder. He has a high grade point average but struggles to uphold for accommodations and to be accepted by his peers. Damien’s IEP team is concerned with his interpersonal, collaboration, and self-advocacy skills. Jasmine is a junior and receives special education services for her specific learning disability and hyperactivity disorder. She struggles with homework completion, time management, test taking, and paying attention. The view outside the windows of my family van is no different from the suburban landscape I had driven away from six hours ago, comforting in its familiarity. Finding Parrish Hall is easy, the iconic building larger than I expected. As I dutifully follow a tour guide through building after building, I can’t help but picture myself as a student at Swarthmore.
The Council for Exceptional Children offers resources for teachers, it also acts as an advocacy group in the sense that it pushes for public policies that affect children with disabilities, and the professionals who work with those children.

As a child I grew up in the foster care system. My formative years consisted of uncertainty and confusion since I was not able to express myself effectively to the state assigned child advocates. During my time in foster care I volunteered to care for the younger children who had special needs. As I began to care for the children especially with neurological brain damage I became intrigued by how little science seemed to know about Special Education or effective treatment. At the age of eleven I started reading peer-reviewed articles such as Neurology journal and Exceptional Children (EC) trying to adsorb everything science related that would provide answers. Several years after I aged out of the system I had a child of my own who was born with severe Autism and sensory integration disorder. During the meeting, several issues are address such as concerns, activities, questions and changes in IEP goals. Student’s placement in a special education program is decided by the IEP team after parents or facilitator gives the ok for the students to begin receiving services that they are in desperate need of. Some decision that at made at the meeting are not always done with all parties in agreement with what needs to change. Some parents don’t agree with some of the services that will be provided to their child but, will need more time to think about the services and need the reason why some decisions where consider for their child, but never receive it. Some parents never agree and do not give their written consent for the services their child has received. When this issue is not resolved parents have the option to ask for mediation and a hearing but because of the backlog with the meeting process they feel that the meeting will not take place and their voice will never be heard. Parents know that in order to participate in their child’s IEP, teachers and the IEP team must know the students disability. To best suit a child with special needs a variety of different elements need to be considered to develop the best plan for the child. This is why it is important to understand that not every child with special needs has a mom or dad. They may have a foster parent and it is the responsibility of the special education teacher to include the foster parent and work with all members of the family. Next, it is important to understand the a disability not only impacts the child but siblings as well. Some siblings may be very helpful while others may act out, it is important to consider siblings when creating a plan as well. Lastly, as a special education teacher, it is important to consider if any extended family help with any responsibility with raising the child. Parents have special knowledge about their child that school personnel might be unaware of. This aspect of parental involvement is especially important when applying special education services for a child with disabilities (Smith et al., 2005). That being said, parents need to understand that while they know a lot about their child overall, the school knows a lot about their child in an academic setting. It is very important to have open lines of communication and mutual respect for each other; to be able to bring together these different aspects of the child to create a successful intervention allowing complete access to education.
