My goal is to maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher to keep my place in the speech-language pathology program. Marywood University was my first choice college and I couldn’t be happier that I’m here. I committed to come to Marywood because of the speech program, the atmosphere, the stress on service, and the importance of education. The reasons I can here parallel the Core Values of Marywood. They also put me on the right track to accomplish my own goals. I want to serve others, get an education, and become a welcoming friend to all who need one. When I found out that Marywood had a 5-year speech program I couldn’t be happier. What could be better than getting a Master’s degree, teacher’s certificate and a liberal arts education in only 5 years? …show more content…
I found out about the Maxis-Gillet Service Scholars and I instantly wanted to be involved. I sent in my application, went for interviews, and now I am a Maxis-Gillet myself! Service has always been a big part of my life and being a Maxis-Gillet furthers my passion. It allows me to serve a new group of people and experience new opportunities. All of the clubs I joined offer service opportunities. I think it’s amazing that every club and athletic team participates in something. I am very involved with activities on campus and I love when I hear that other people are having a good time.
Last but not least is education. I aspire to be a well-rounded speech pathologist and Marywood offers me multiple ways to accomplish this. By attending a liberal arts college, I will get educated in many areas, not just in speech pathology. Although it may seem like a lot to handle, it really is worth it. Marywood is preparing me for the rest of my life. Overall, Marywood’s values parallel my goals. I want to be a well-rounded speech-language pathologist, I want to serve others, and I want to be a kind and welcoming person. Marywood is putting me on the exact track that I want to be on. When I leave here, I want to accomplish all of the goals I set for myself. For right now, my closest goal is to maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher so in the near future I can complete my other
From being diagnosed at a young age with dyslexia and apraxia of the speech, I am not sure where I would be without the help and encouragement of my speech pathologists. ‘Speech-language pathologists assess, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent communication and swallowing disorders in patients’ (Summary, www.bls.org, 2015). Along with helping their patients overcome or learn how to understand their disorders, speech pathologists must keep records.
Loyola Marymount University has been on my list of colleges ever since I stepped foot onto the campus in 2009. Five years later and my admiration of the school has still not reduced. Personally, I believe that without education, a person doesn't have the ability to become prosperous; education is the key to success. Considering this, a person also has to love what they’re doing every day or else they will never be happy. The combination of all these factors leads a person to live their life to the fullest with prosperity, wealth and pleasure. All of these key components are evident in LMU, thus the reason why I am so passionate about attending the campus and adopting the lifestyle of a lion. In addition to the beautiful campus that allows one to imagine they are on a resort instead of a school as well as the intimate student to faculty ratio that gives students the direct attention they need, LMU has a fantastic undergraduate business program that excites me and will prepare me for my future as a possible entrepreneur or lawyer.
Though the Williams Honors College had a tremendous impact on my undergraduate days, I am very excited about how it will impact my future. The Honors College has deepened my commitment to the University of Akron and the greater Akron community. Though neither of my parents are from Akron, they moved me here when I was two years old. Akron is my home and my time at the University has secured my roots. I am appreciative of everything the Williams Honors College has given me, and I cannot wait to give some of that back to the University of Akron and the Williams Honors College in the
Currently, there is an increased demand for Speech-language Pathologist’ who are able to provide effective therapy to the diverse multicultural population. To work effectively within the multicultural setting, a speech-language pathologist should be prepared to offer services and work with individuals from a variety of different backgrounds. The individuals within the population of people who seek/need speech therapy speak different languages and dialects, are of different races, cultures, and socioeconomic status. However, when working with distinctive individuals there are both benefits and challenges.
Speech-language pathology is a challenging yet rewarding career path. There are many things to consider before choosing this career, including salary, responsibilities, education, and qualities just to name a few. A speech-language pathologist works directly with the client or patient to provide support and care. Like any other job, there are some issues that cause concern for those considering this career field. In speech-language pathology, the main issue is the high caseload/workload, which can cause people to not want to enter into this career. Even though this problem is major, the benefits of the career outweigh this potential issue. Speech-language pathology is a tremendously rewarding career to enter into.
A study by Skahan, Watson & Lof (2007) examined the assessment methods used by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) when assessing children with suspected speech sound disorders (SSD). Through a national survey, the study also examined the assessment of non-native English speakers and the length of the assessment process (Skahan, Watson & Lof, 2007). The study was pursued due to a lack of research regarding the assessment methods used by SLPs to identify children with SSD. Previous research by Tyler et al. (2002) discussed a variety of standardized and non-standardized assessments for SSDs. While the general areas of assessment were similar, the specific assessment procedures varied according to the clinicians’ theoretical perspective. Thus, the purpose of the study was to provide information about the current assessment methods used by SLPs in diagnosing children with suspected SSD (Skahan, Watson & Lof, 2007). The findings will allow clinicians to compare their own assessment methods with the participants of the study (Skahan, Watson & Lof, 2007).
Despite the fact that I know anatomy and physiology is a crucial component in pursuing a career in Speech Pathology, I am not excited about taking this course. Anatomy and Physiology is a course that contains a great deal of information. Knowing how the structure and function of certain respiratory, phonatory, articulatory, resonatory, and nervous systems relate or affect speech is what this course encompasses. The information in this course is essential to know for Speech Pathologists, because in order to fully understand and evaluate a problem that a client might have, a Speech Pathologist needs to know the effects that an underlying anatomical and physiological problem may have on an individual’s speech difficulties or challenges. The fact
My main goal is to get a quality education through the University of Toledo and prove to become a successful student. I believe that my academic achievements until now will reflect my success in college. I can confidently tell that I am a greatly motivated student, who is passionate about embracing the society and the college through my passion, hard-work and
I decided to attend Oakton in the fall of 2013, because of my mother’s health and financial difficulties. I felt safe being close to home and being able to receive quality education . It was when I entered Oakton Community College that I discovered my true potential. My enormous inspiration for change came when I attended Oakton Orientation. During the student life session leaders informed us about opportunities to get involved .I heard someone say to my group “ Oakton is your second chance , if you didn’t do well in high school you can start all over at Oakton”. Ever since that day I was assured that I was going to bring out the best potential that I could possibly portray. I started my involvement at Oakton by being at events that Oakton Journey hosted. I was there so often that I was able to get the opportunity to be a Peer Mentor. I have been influenced by many positive faculty members, and professors at Oakton to reach for my full potential. A faculty member that has influenced me greatly is Beatriz Sparks. While working with Beatriz in Career Services and the Office of the Vice President, I learned to always think positive in every situation.
In the field of speech language pathology parent education and involvement in treatment programs can be very beneficial to a client’s progress(TEMPEL). Evidence supports the use of programs that contain interactive approaches to speech and language intervention(LORRAINE). The importance of education is often recognized but can be difficult to deliver. The challenge of providing an effective parent/ caregiver education is an issue that Speech Language Pthologists may come in contact with.
On the national and state level of speech-language pathology I plan to advocate and educate individuals regarding health, literacy and education. As a Latina, I would like to facilitate this information by translating it to families or individuals who speak English as their second language. Additionally, I plan to participate in the New York State Speech Language and Hearing Association (NYSSLHA) which assists the professionals with state legislation, state licensure, ethical practice, continuing education, and other relevant issues.
I released a nervous breath as I looked in the mirror smoothing the wrinkles on my thank top, hoping this isn't to fancy or to casual for my first day at The University of London. It's so shocking that I even got in considering my grades in my years of high school were not the best but to be honest, I think my mom had something to do with it since she is the new vice president after the last one retired. But I don't really care as I'm now studying to become a Speech-Language Pathologist, becoming a Speech-Language Pathologist is my dream job and I hope that dream can become a reality.
Speech pathology is an interesting field that affects various individuals’ ability to communicate in different ways. In pursuing an education in speech-language pathology I decided that I want to work with children. Communication is a process that is often taken for granted, and I intend to help individuals in which communicating is a strenuous process. The areas of speech pathology that interest me the most are phonological disorders and motor speech disorders. These disorders are important and interesting because they deal with speech production and speech is a medium through which many individuals express themselves and communicate their intent. In taking communication disorder courses and anatomy course it was interesting learning all
In the fall of 201,6 I will be attending Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri as a Broadcast Journalism major. At Lincoln University, my academic goals goals are to maintain a 4.0 GPA, be in the top 10% of my class, and to make the dean's list. The reasons why these are my goals is because I know I will have a strong sense of pride and achievement knowing that I accomplished a major goal. With having a 4.0 during the school year, I hope that my academic achievements will help land an internship with television network.
My mother never let me underestimate the value of an education. She worked hard to put herself through school as a single mother, towing me around campus as I watched, wide-eyed, at all of the students rushing by. She always pushed excellence and that’s why I’ve always held myself to the highest standards. Her tragic experience with mental health issues and poverty have encouraged me to work hard towards not only a degree, but towards a career that can help make a difference. By personally experiencing childhood poverty and homelessness I’ve gained a greater appreciation for those that dedicate their lives to helping persons in need. My goal is to become a doctor using my background in Public Health to better serve impoverished communities and research solutions to pertinent health issues. I believe the University of Texas at Austin can help me achieve my goal.
