Speed or Tempo: What is the difference?
Speed in terms of command and control is the ability to shorten the time needed to make key decisions, plans, coordinate as well as communicate. Whereas tempo is acting at the right time as well as acting the fastest or the earliest, the main importance between the two is speed is the ability to shorten the time between the decisions being made whereas tempo, is implementing the right timing on the battlefield. There is a large need to increase speed on the battlefield, whether it be speeding up operations or slowing the enemies speed. Now which one allows the other to be more effective? Tempo, tempo or the rhythm of the battle allows speed to be increased. In terms of intelligence and command and control, effective intelligence can be the make it or break it factor in terms of increasing the tempo. Now gaining speed and tempo in intelligence operations can be

Orient, Observe, Decide and Act, through this loop speed are essential, the ability to be faster than the enemy, to outthink and out maneuver, is a key on the battlefield that can decide victory or failure. One key example of this was in WWII with General George S. Patton, during the battle of the bulge he and his staff began preparing 3 separate plans as well as keeping their information flow open in case of a German attack which came. His ability to read the battlefield and the information being fed to him from his G-2 kept him well informed and gave him the ability to preempt the strike and counter the German attack. The other key point was the focus on intelligence from Gen. Patton, by using the CCIR’s he had identified it sped the information flow as well allowed him to further visualize the
COL Prescott’s understanding of operational variables (PMESII-PT) and mission variables (METT-TC) contributes to his mission command effectiveness. In Battles of the Revolutionary War (Wood), COL Prescott demonstrates his grasp of these variables by determining the British forces’ strength, the morale condition of his own men and the effective location from which his orders say defend. The 6000 British soldiers’ training and equipment outstrip the colonists in every aspect. To deny the British from seizing Dorchester Heights, COL Prescott’s understanding of the current situation gave way to his effective planning that was effective in his visualization of the defense mission.
What might have been the setback we previously faced in making decisive, clear or sound effective decisions? Was it a defect in how Commanders and Leaders led units or troops, or perhaps the philosophy in which we chose to command and control every aspect of the battlefield? What does it mean to recognize or comprehend the art of Command and the science of Control? The six principles of mission command are key in developing a cohesive team that will support all aspects of the mission. Asking “why” is now encouraged when it pertains to certain situations or missions. Understanding the purpose of why a course of action or desired outcome is necessary, leads to mission success and a cohesive unit with thinking leaders. Thinking clearly usually isn’t an issue for most leaders, but position an individual in a situation of extreme stress or complexity, then there might be a reason to be concerned. Through
The battle of Ap Bac was a small battle engaged between the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) and the insurgents, or the People Liberation Armed Forces (Viet Cong AKA VC) with the assistance of American’s weapons and advice during the Vietnam War. It took place on 2 January, 1963, near a small village named Ap Bac which is located approximately 65 km southwest of Saigon in the Mekong Delta. (Starry, 2002). As a senior leader, it is important that we have to be technically and tactically proficient. In order to be proficient, we not only need to be trained, but also we have to know how to gain experience from past battles in history using battle assessment, and critical thinking process to study the battle. That way, we know what needs to be improved, how to sustain it, and how would we execute it better next time. Therefore, studying the history of the battle of Ap Bac will enhance the knowledge of how the commanders used the most effective and efficient method for applying decisive action on the battle field. It would be a successful outcome for the South Vietnamese ARVN, and Kennedy’s administration would have gained more trust from American people for the presence of American troops in Vietnam, if the American advisers and the ARVN’s commanders would have integrated intelligence preparation of the battlefield (ITP) throughout the operations process to identify the gaps of intelligence between human intelligence (HUMINT),
Without signing a hot commodity in free agency or drafting a highly projected premium round pass rusher, the vibe from most outsiders is that the Cowboys’ brass didn’t do enough to improve the pass rush.

From the earliest recorded history, humans have waged war upon one another. To conquer and expand their empires, military leaders have experimented with hundreds upon hundreds of tactics and theories about how to wage these wars. The United States Army has refined and crafted the science of warfare and the art of leadership, designing six ‘warfighting functions’ that interrelate with each other. These warfighting functions shape the way an United States Army Officer plans for combat. The six warfighting functions are Mission Command, Movement and Maneuver, Intelligence, Fires, Sustainment, and Protection. The use of these functions can be directly related to the success of many victories the United States has seen, not only on the War level, but also for specific battles. In researching the Siege of Yorktown, it is clear to see that these warfighting functions were key to the victory of the siege. This decisive victory legitimized the then freshly founded United States of America.
Mission command is a philosophy and a war fighting function that supports the army’s operation concept, unified land operation. It involves the exercise of the commander’s authority and direction to enable discipline within the commander’s intent. In war, armies are required to seize, retain and gain an advantage over their enemies. Thus, mission command is vital in achieving these initiatives since the commander integrates the principles of mission fighting by applying the art of command and its supportive science of control. General Robert Lee, a Confederate Commander during the American Civil War, is famed for his mission command abilities as evidenced by his success in the Battle of Chancellorsville against a stronger and numerically advantaged

so often forgotten--that the test of battle is the only test which proves the combat ability of Commanders was relearned. The ability or the lack of ability of the various Cozmanders in the art of war became apparent. alor alone was shown to be insuffioient, for valor is not an attribute of only one racA, but is an attribute and a heritage of many races.' The indispensable qualification for command, the art of war, was shown to be the ability in con-bat to apply the science of war to aotive military situations.
At the beginning of 6th grade in cross country I was really slow like 9 or 10 minute miles one of the slowest on the team and every time I went to a meet I would finish around last or dead last but even then all my teammates and coaches would cheer me on at the end and from that I would kick it in at the end and I would wheeze and wheeze when I passed the finish line and even though I got last everybody still congratulated me and it made me feel good about what I did even if I did run a 16 minute mile and a half. The people that made me especially feel good was coach Renberg and Coach Stern They would be the most encouraging at the end of races they would cheer and yell “Come on Michael the finish is right around the corner” and “Go you got
The final attribute of mission command for consideration is understanding. Understanding prepares leaders at all echelons with the vision and far-sightedness that is essential to make operative choices, manage risks, and consider second and third order effects (Mission Command White Paper, 3 April 2012, 5). Leaders who possess understanding have the mental capacity to grasp and appreciate any state of affairs which facilitates their capacity to make autonomous decisions. Conversely, leaders who lack understanding put their troops or others at risk.
Military leaders make decisions and solve problems every day. Some need a decision quickly while others can take time. The US Army has several decision-making methods to assist leaders. The Army Problem Solving Model (Process) is a systematic approach to identifying the best possible solution to an issue or problem and a deliberate method of decision-making. (FM 6-0, 2009) Leaders use it to solve a problem when time is not critical and they can put some thought into different solutions. The solution must be objective and based on facts in order for the decision to be relevant and practical. The Rapid Decision Making and Synchronization Process is a decision-making and synchronization technique typically used during the execution
Initiative. The army is a very good organisation for allowing its personnel to use their initiative. All soldiers are told and trained to use their initiative, as this is one of the qualities their superiors are looking for when considering a person for promotion and career progression.
Movement and Maneuver – The discussion should include how both sides conducted maneuver and movement as well as the capabilities each side possessed.
