By 1860 American inventors like Samuel Colt, Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson, Oliver Winchester, Benjamin Henry, and Christopher Spencer were on the brink of mass producing magazine-fed, lever-action, repeating rifles that fired self-contained metallic cartridges. Once the Civil War began, two companies dominated the competition for lucrative government contracts—the New Haven Arms Company (Henry rifle) and the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company (Spencer rifle). Officers in the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company were politically connected and quickly secured contracts with both the Navy and War departments by late 1861. Two years later the New Haven Arms Company finally won its first government contract. Consequently, the Spencer rifle and carbine
In the Dakota 38 documentary, Jim Miller a Native American leader had a vision in which he rode on horseback across a majority of South Dakota. At the end of his vision, he saw the execution of 38 of his ancestors after the US-Dakota War of 1862. The documentary goes on to explain that the trials were not conducted fairly because the evidence was sparse and the people were bias, along with them being conducted in a language unknown to the defendants. Miller says he wants to plan a horseback ride to honor his tribes struggle with this event, so he and a few other tribe members planned a route to ride which followed his vision ending at the location of the executions on December 26th, the same day that the hangings happened. Miller said one
The Gatling gun is the first gun invented in America by Richard J. Gatling: his brilliant idea became a great success when the Gatling gun is confirmed for the civil war. This weapon comes in different forms, but fires the same amount for the gun. Sometimes they stop firing to change the fire angle or to check of there is a bullet container stuck inside the gun as a mount function.
Early bullets were designed to be placed in this new loading system. The classic way of having the powder and pellets separate was too slow and messy. This early design of the bullet is very similar to the simple modern one. It had a metal casing with powder placed behind the pellets or in some cases one large pellet (Hogg 54). With these being loaded from the side on the new rifles they were capable of firing a shot much faster then the gun of a hundred years earlier. Even though the gun had become more powerful the Civil War was still a political war.
Even though there were progress and the advancement of guns, you still had to reload after every shot, the repeating rifle allowed you to fire of a magazine of ammunition before reloading changed the effectiveness and also the deadliness of wars. The repeating rifle was invented in 1860 by a man called Christian Spencer, a machinist who worked in Hartford. It was the first of its kind, being able to fired tens of rounds in a minute compared to a few shots every minute gave a huge advantage. With the North being able to mass produce this weapon gave a huge advantage on the battlefield. The only weakness of the rifle was the short range. The repeating rifle was only one example of many where the North industrial side show it's overwhelming

The Civil War is a harsh part of American history but the life of the soldiers was a real struggle. Most people know that the soldiers had a miserable life but it was far worse than people assume. Weapons weren’t easy to use, training was like starting from scratch and the camp life was miserable. Whether is was the North or the South, life wasn’t easy. Therefore, during the Civil War, the soldiers continued the courageous and daring fight in spite of poorly constructed weapons, labored training, and dreadful living conditions.
Although the Model 1861 and the Spencer were the primary weapons for Union soldiers, their side arms were equally important. The Colt Army Model 1860 was the most popular sidearm among the Union army. The Colt Model 1860 was a .44 caliber six shot weapon which weighed 2 pounds 11 ounces. At $13.75, the Colt Army Revolver was much more expensive than those made by Remington or Starr. Production for the Colt Model 1860 ceased in November 1863. This pistol was the main weapon carried by upper class lieutenants, colonels, and generals throughout the war.5
The Remington production factories, located in New England, began producing the Harper’s Ferry Rifle in 1850.

The Civil War caused many new weapons to be built. There were even weapons and technology made for navy ships. These weapons ranged from small hand-held weapons to large field artillery.
During the American Civil War (1861), Richard J. Gatling invented a firearm weapon that aided with loading, reliability, and the firing of sustained bursts. Born and raised in Hertford County, North Carolina Gatling grew up to be a physician and became involved in many organizations such as the Order of American Knights. The Gatling gun is a machine gun composed of multiple barrels that rotates around a central axis that has the ability of firing at a rapid speed. Before his invention, he followed the path of an inventor and soon after he devoted himself to the perfection of firearms. After his invention of the machine gun he then founded the Gatling Gun Company.
The Civil War was the United States versus United States. It was the one of the best times when it came to weapon advanstments. Most of the weapons used took about thrity seconds, at the fastest, to reload a Springfield Model 1861. Having a fast reload time was very important. Being caught without ammo was not a good thing. Most men had bayonets on their rifles to stab the oncoming attackers. Even with a bayonet you were running a real risk getting so close to the enemy. With factors inclueding reload spead, typical range and weight. Including all of those factors the Colt 1855 revolving rifle is the best rifle during the civil
