The “Sphere of Influence” is located in Rossland, BC, a strong biking community in the West Kootenay. The sphere was made in 2014 and was first installed in April 2015 by the community local Arts and Culture Council. It is created using old collected bike wheels, spokes, and gears. The wheels are pieced together to form a complete bubble, towering as high as the buildings surrounding it. Each piece of the sculpture is moulded together and has rusted over time. None of the wheels are bent, but instead fit together, matching the rims to make a sphere. It stands connected to a rusted metal semi sphere cage that is bolted to a cement platform. There are all different sorts of bike wheels that make up this sculpture, some are colourful and from …show more content…
The sculpture has a rustic quality, and draws one's eye to it because of its large scale. The art brings a purpose and beautifies a long time empty property between two local businesses. It resides next to a sidewalk outside of the local bike shop, brewery, and Laundromat. Next to the “Sphere of Influence” is a sign picketed that states “Art is for admiring, mountains are for climbing,” which mean please do not climb on the sculpture. This is significant because when I stood admiring the statue a little boy ran up and started hanging off the wheels and poking his head into the centre of the sphere. Because the artist used bike wheels as the main medium the “Sphere of Influence” may influence one to enjoy biking. “Arco Bears” by John Mckinnon is a sculpture of two black identical bears. One bear is placed aloft the other balancing on its pals paws while the bear on the bottom balances on its back with his head off reaching. The bears are located in Rossland, BC in the West Kootenays. They make an echoing sound when knocked on meaning that they are hollow. John Mckinnon uses welded steel and bronze to create “Arco Bears”. They both have round bellies, like they’ve eaten all of the neighbors
This could either be a Grizzly Bear or a Kodiak bear. This sculpture is number 112 out of 1500.
“Let’s say you’re watching an old horror movie, one about a crazy madman who lives in a spooky house up on a hill. Local kids will become curious and decide to step foot into the house. The majority of the time the creepy man will have two things; paintings with the eyes cut out and a nice collection of mounted animals to give intruders a sense of fear. Then all of a sudden lightning flashes and a growling black bear is lit up, sending the kids screaming into the front yard” (Bryant). It turns out that terrifying black bear is actually a valuable piece of artwork. Taxidermy has been an underrated art form throughout its history and it does not get the recognition it
This is a full round/free standing sculpture made from brass, and it is entirely black. It is a sculpture of a Native American riding a horse going down a very steep side of a mountain. The Native American Indian have very long hair, and he’s wearing a very thick wool hat. His face look really tired and calm. He’s wearing a collared button up shirt and a jacket over it, and his outfit includes shredded design all the way from the sleeves on the jacket to the ankle line of the pants. He carries a small side bag hanging from his shoulder, and on top of that, there’s a horn of some sort of animal being. In front of him, he has his shot gun sitting side ways across the back of the horse. On the other hand, he has a huge bag tied behind him, which
…It’s no matter that you don’t like it; you will do the wisest thing you ever did if you make that effort of will necessary for finishing it. Destroy the statue then, if you like, but make the effort. ” (131) Moreover, this persuasion by Rowland has an elegiac effect on the young sculptor, who is deeply hurt that his patron is not defending him against the overbearing Leavenworth. There is, however, a simmering rage developing in Rowland, which he has previously dissimulated out of fear of appearing to everyone as a bad person.
The sculpture i used for my for analysis is Augustus of primaporta the artist is unknown but thought to have been greek, date is early 1st century and medium is marble. The subject in the sculpture is Augustus Caesar (or Gaius octavian) the grandnephew of Julius caesar and the ruler of rome until his death at age 75-76, In the sculpture we see augustus in his prime, his depicted in the standard pose of a roman speaker and detailed in all of his accomplishments and family ties. I think what the artist was trying to do was show his love and appreciation for his ruler, his trying to send out a message of how amazing and accomplished augustus is.
Another element that needs to be observed in this statue is the shift from the mechanical conception regarding the body whereby the parts do work independently of each other through an organic conception in which the parts do function interpedently among each other. This is evidenced mostly through the concept of weight shift whereby the artist does distinguish the weight bearing leg against the one that is free. This is true as one can feel their own body as they shift the weight from one leg to another, thus, the axes concerned with the body will respond to the shift of weight (Moon
Many people think this is a very important statue. However, not all critics are obsessed
Since the beginnings of recorded history, humanity has used sculpture to express itself for a variety of purposes. These purposes can be wildly different, from portraiture, to religion, to simply satisfying the artist’s desire to create. In this paper, I will discuss two statues created thousands of years ago and currently held in the in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The colors in the back of the sculpture are dark and vividly colored and are nearly completely concealed from a viewer at the front, giving the sculpture an almost business in the front and party in the back appearance. The design element of form is used excellently in Skyward’s freestanding sculpture. It’s relatively simple geometric shapes are lined up in a manner to draw your eyes upwards and it’s seemingly plain front hides complex artwork and shapes that lie behind its façade. Its pedestal hides three spherical objects, one orb and two half spheres, that set the structure’s rise towards the sky. It features a cube form that is delicately balanced at the bottom and sides slyly hide it’s interesting and colorful backside. The next object in this stack is a sphere within a circle and it is decorated with splash art and an influx of warm hues. Finally, a triangle stretching skywards is featured at the top of the sculpture itself. The design principle I chose to analyze was the symmetrical shape of
I remembered this sarcastic sculpture as I was reading about scientist hawking’s 70th birthday celebration. For almost three-quarter of a century, he has survived motor neuron disease. Besides, he has developed revolutionary concepts that have a significant impact in the field of physics. He has contributed as much as Isaac Newton and shown other scientists how to communicate effectively theoretical physics. Currently, theoretical physics is accessible to the public just like history.
Although it is smaller than the previous statue, one can come to this conclusion by firstly observing the material being used by the artist. It is formed by stone and more significantly, it has inscriptions which appear to convey a message (The Metropolitan Museum of Art B, n.d.).
The Tree sculpture is one of the most controversial sculptures that received many scandalous reactions from most people. The tree was installed at 11:30 am at the Place Vendome in Paris, France. The installment took place before the first day of the exhibition overnight. The sculpture was named just “Tree”, and it was approved by all Parisian organizations who oversees the installations. However, the sculpture was seen for a short-lived amount of time at the Place Vendome, as it lasted for three days before it got vandalized and deflated by one of the people who caused a scandal over the sculpture.
This sculpture is an example of how the Ancient Greeks admired the human body. Today's society also follows the idea of perfect people and bodies and the want and admiration to achieve that. The people today continue to maintain a goal of physical fitness and wellness. Pericles states in one of his speeches, “Our form of government is called a democracy because its administration is in the hands, not a few, but of the whole peoples.” People around the world follow a democratic government. But this originated from the Ancient Greeks when they created their own government to better the people, just as we do today. The Ancient Greeks helped further the civilization which led to the Roman Society.
Ironically enough the statue entails a sense of dread and beauty to it simultaneously because of how appreciative it is to view such great sculpt and detail put forth. Not only that, but the large empty space on the right balances out all of the action of the father’s body and arm on the left side.
For this assignment I decided to analyze a sculpture that is currently standing on SIUE’s campus. The sculpture is located near Peck Hall, and can be described as a large iPhone that appears to have a cracked home screen. I decided to use this sculpture for a facet of reasons. The first reason being that it illustrates the issues humanity has with using technology. Another reason I decided to use this image is it what the first sculpture on campus that lead me to think critically about how it represents the culture on campus. The final reason behind my selection of this image is that this is one of the more popular sculptures on campus among my peers. Throughout this essay I will be explaining how the sculpture I chose relates to the reasons
