The “Sphere of Influence” is located in Rossland, BC, a strong biking community in the West Kootenay. The sphere was made in 2014 and was first installed in April 2015 by the community local Arts and Culture Council. It is created using old collected bike wheels, spokes, and gears. The wheels are pieced together to form a complete bubble, towering as high as the buildings surrounding it. Each piece of the sculpture is moulded together and has rusted over time. None of the wheels are bent, but instead fit together, matching the rims to make a sphere. It stands connected to a rusted metal semi sphere cage that is bolted to a cement platform. The sculpture has a rustic quality, and draws one's eye to it because of its large scale.The art brings a purpose and beautifies a long time empty property between two local businesses. It resides next to a sidewalk outside of the local bike shop, brewery, and Laundromat. Next to the “Sphere of Influence” is a sign picketed that states “Art is for admiring, mountains are for climbing,” which mean please do not climb on the sculpture. This is significant because when I stood admiring the statue a little boy ran up and started hanging off the wheels and poking his head into the centre of the sphere. Because the artist used bike wheels as the main medium the “Sphere of Influence” may influence one to enjoy biking. “Arco Bears” by John Mckinnon is a sculpture of two black identical bears. One bear is placed aloft the other balancing on its pals paws while the bear on the bottom balances on its back with his head off reaching. The bears are located in Rossland, BC in the West Kootenays. They make an echoing sound when knocked on meaning that they are hollow. John Mckinnon uses welded steel and bronze to create “Arco Bears”. They both have round bellies, like they’ve eaten all of the neighbors
