Throughout the movie of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith you can see a plethora of examples of interpersonal communication between the due of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. The major three that are seen throughout the film are conflict, emotions, and their nonverbal communication. The conflict is the most serious compenment in this movie because you can sense the conflict that is brewing, and when it explodes, it is massive. The conflict that is used in this film is what makes the emotions of the film so exuberant. Then with these two characters being together as master and apprentice in the two previous films of the trilogy their non verbal communication is key to their relationship. Being able to have good interpersonal communication is key to any duo, and Obi-Wan and Anakin show that they have this chemistry.
A major concept throughout the movie is the conflict that goes on between the characters of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. Described by Floyd (2017), as “an expressed struggle between interdependent [parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from one another” (p. 343). There are many characteristic of interpersonal conflict, a few include, conflict is natural, conflict can direct and indirect, and conflict can be harmful and beneficial. Sex, gender, and culture are just some of the many things that can affect an interpersonal conflict. Another major aspect of conflict is power, which comes in many forms (Floyd, 2017).
Throughout the semester, we have been introduced to many topics related to interpersonal communication. I have come to believe that these concepts have allowed me to better understand interactions that occur in our daily lives. My knowledge of these concepts was challenged when asked to relate these notions to a movie. During the time that I was watching the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I realized myself grasping onto what was going on and being able to relate certain scenes and situations to topics I had previously learned about. Interactions in My Big Fat Greek Wedding display concepts of conflict and politeness theory, which can be pointed out in a few specific scenes.
While viewing Pitch Perfect, there were numerous concepts of communication being depicted throughout the film that were easily identifiable. This movie in summary is about a group of women, in college that join an acapella group called the Barden Bellas. These women do variations and covers of songs throughout performances in the movie. They do this in order to go to the ICCA championships and win the finals against their rival acapella group on their campus, the Treblemakers. The Treblemakers are a dominant male group on campus that does covers of new age and more modern music unlike the Barden Bellas in the opening of the movie where they do more traditional styled music. Becca, the main character, has to juggle an internship, her education, and participating in the Barden Bellas. The Barden Bellas have to make a decision on their final set in order to beat the Treblemakers in the finals at the ICCA championship for acapella singing (Banks, 2012). Throughout this movie there are three defining concepts that are continuously repetitive in nature, and are illustrated in various situations in Pitch Perfect. The three essential key concepts of communication that are portrayed in this film are nonverbal communication, interpersonal conflict, and deceptive communication. Each concept has examples in the movie that represent each one.
The way a child speaks provides insight into where they are in terms of their language acquisition. In the video “Star Wars according to a 3 year old”, the three-year-old girl does a pretty good job of describing the sequence of episode four of Star Wars. However, since she is only three, there are points in the video that her speech indicates that she has not yet fully acquired language.
Throughout the galaxy in the world of star wars, power struggles keep on hurting the jedi. The book Star Wars episode 2 is full of war for every jedi or sith. “War” means a struggle for power over the whole galaxy in the star wars book. In the book war is a key part of what happens in all the republic and their enemies. It is different for young jedi padawan Anakin who is torn on his anger for his losses and his love for the young senator Padme amidala. The book makes it show when Anakin gets lectured by his master Obi Wan and the way he shows his feelings towards Padme after a long 10 years. Over and over war tugs on Anakin’s feelings which makes him confused on what is right and wrong. Anakin keeps
I decided to go to Panda Express at 5:30 pm for my observations, while there I was able to observe just how much people rely on nonverbal communications to get their point across. Although I witnessed several encounters of unique body language, there were also a few actions that reoccurred several times in several different people. For example, when a customer would approach the counter where employee served the food, the employee would raise her eyebrows and smile at the customer. The employee’s smile, however, did not reach her eyes suggesting that while it is her job to smile and be welcoming to the customer, she most likely did not want to be at work. Additionally, I noticed that when customers approached the counter about 90 percent of them had their arms crossed. The act of crossing ones arms usually means that a person is trying to put a barrier between them and a situation that they either don’t like, or are uncomfortable with. This may mean that the customers were displeased with having to wait in line to get their food, on the other hand it may be that they were simply comfortable folding their arms. Once they reached the front of the line, every customer pointed to the food they wanted along with verbally telling the employee. This made their communication more effective as it helped to overcome the barrier of sound because the restaurant was noisy.
Non-verbal communication consists mainly of the things people do with their body language. There are times where words are expressed and non-verbal communication could help emphasize the message. A few examples of nonverbal communication are hand gestures eye contact, facial expressions as well as tone and volume. I was given this assignment to observe a situation and take note of the nonverbal communication that occurred. I also had to observe whether the non-verbals were able to execute the message and if the behavior was acceptable.
First, is my lack of verbal saying because I rarely speak unless it is necessary. When ask a yes or no question I respond by nodding my head. Or when I do speak it’s as soft as a whisper. Secondly, my crazy obsession with Star Wars because that’s all I talk about and collect anything related to it, and finally, my lack of expressing my feelings. When I’m mad, sad, or stressed, I don’t say out loud of what's my emotion at the the moment, rather I keep it to myself.
Body language (the process of communicating nonverbally through conscious or unconscious gestures and movements). People all of the world use body language or gestures to communicate nonverbally. I personally think that nonverbal communication and body language are one of the biggest barriers in communication especially between one culture to other. Body gestures can be misinterpreted as rude or disrespectful depending on the country, region, or even the city you’re from.
Few realize how loud their expressions really are. Be kind with what you wordlessly say.” A quote from a popularly known author, Richelle E. Goodrich. We speak not only from our words but from our expressions. Many time, these expressions are unknown and are just caught upon from our surroundings. Our brain takes in this information and we do not really know how these expressions developed. In our day to day verbal activities, we follow up with so many non-verbal ques like the sounds we make following our words, or the way we pronounce these words. The use of pitch and pace of our voice and words to make interesting conversations. The clothing we wear based on the social norms we follow or just based on our culture or traditions. The use of our distance to known and unknown people. The use of eye contact to express the level of intensifications, the actual emphasis of the emotion running in the brain at the time. The uses of pauses in our speech and the judging of the expressions on other peoples faces. Misjudging of emotions carried along with another emotion because of the lack of understanding of mixed emotions, to give which emotion the priority during that situation. This media analysis focuses on the nonverbal communication and its different aspects in the movie “Inside Out”. Inside out is a movie about a girl and the five major emotions that control her life based on daily situations she faces. This movie is enriched with nonverbal communication as the emotions are
In chapter six we learned about nonverbal codes, which are distinct and organized means of expression that has specific symbolic meaning and rules for their use. Under the topic of nonverbal codes, the book covered the term kinesics which is used to describe all nonverbal communication cues that transmitted by face and body. Our facial expression is part of our bodily movement use can be used to indicate immediacy, in other words, I can be used to indicate out close or involved we are with others. Facial expressions are kinesics which used to show emotion in which the eye expression plays an important part of facial expression for communication.
In order for me to talk with Darbi about the gospel, I need to determine the elements of verbal and nonverbal communication that would be important when communicating in this specific context. I first have to prepare myself and my ideas before I get into a conversation with her. For example, I know Darbi really enjoys debating my theology. To keep the conversation smooth, I need to make a mental note of how I will speak. Tone of voice and body language is key when dealing with a person who enjoys confrontation. I need to speak in a way that will allow Darbi to know that I am not looking for an argument, but a serious conversation. When she does try to debate, I have to watch how my facial expressions and gestures react and make sure that I do not allow her to sense that I am tense or
The Chinese value silence and avoid disagreeing. The purpose of avoidance is to lessen conflict and maintain a peaceful environment. When assessing a pregnant Chinese woman, it is important to understand this idea of silence. The Chinese woman may remain silent during an exam and while the nurse is educating. Although the woman is not verbalizing her understanding, she most likely does. It is important to gauge how the woman demonstrates understanding. Head nods or silence are often nonverbal cues that a Chinese patient may demonstrate (Giger and Davidhizar, 2006).
To me interpersonal communication describes the exchange of verbal and nonverbal messages between two different people. Joseph DeVito states that “interpersonal communication is inevitable, irreversible, and unrepeatable” due to these things effective communication is a necessary skill for us to function in our day to day lives (p. 20). Therefore, I have created a theory for interpersonal communication that goes as follows; To experience effective communication you must understand: your culture, the other person’s culture, and how to listen effectively. By knowing these three things you can consistently avoid misunderstandings and promote understanding in your interpersonal and intercultural relationships.
Communicating through social media and technology can sometimes be challenging, what are these challenges and how does this affect the nonverbal communication; and do you think this form of communication causes inabilities to interact positively and work effectively with others. While communicating through new technologies and social media can be challenging at times for some, one must also remember that “nonverbal behaviors can be important in establishing trust in working relationships, but modern technologies may challenge our ability to maintain that trust” (Nelson & Quick, 2017, pg. 131). This is because too much of a good thing can cause harmful reactions when trying to communication with another through that of modern
The film "Body language & nonverbal communication" is a show held by Allan Pease explaining what is a nonverbal communication. I enjoyed this video as Allan Pease explains with humor and humility with the help of the public what our body is telling about us in our everyday attitudes.
