A company that I frequently visit on a semi-regular basis is Starbucks. Starbucks is a popular company that is recognized internationally and specializes in premium roast coffee, as well as other beverages. Starbucks, according to The Richest, is currently the power house of the coffee world. They are not only known for selling high quality coffee, but also providing an inviting atmosphere with good music and comfortable seats. Starbucks’ mission is, “to inspire and nurture the human spirit one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time”. The company’s success can be credited to this distinctive mission.
The Starbucks story began in 1971 in Washington when it opened its first store in Seattle’s Pike Place Market. The company is named after the first mate in Moby Dick. Their logo is inspired by the sea. The lady that is the Starbucks logo is actually not an ordinary lady, it is a twin-tailed siren from Greek mythology. Back then, they were retailers of whole bean and ground coffee. As well as tea and spices. In 1981 Howard Schultz, the chief executive officer and chairman of Starbucks today, had his first cup of Starbucks coffee and was speechless. A year later he started working there. The story of Starbucks starts when Howard Schultz joined the marketing team and transformed a commodity into a cultural phenomenon. After traveling to Italy, Howard became fascinated with the European coffee experience and wanted to bring that experience and sense of community back to the US. He wanted Starbuck to be America’s third place between work and home, a place people could relax and enjoy.
Imaging if there was no more coffee in this world, how would you feel? Nowadays, coffee becomes an important part of people’s life. People who often work overtime, they drink coffee because caffeine can make you awake; people who have to wake up early in the morning, they drink coffee because instead of making breakfast, coffee is more convenient; people drink coffee during the free time, because it also tastes good.

Starting as a single shop specializing in high quality coffee and brewing products, the company grew to be the largest roaster in Washington with multiple locations until the early 1980’s. CEO Howard Schultz, recognized a great opportunity and began working with the founder Jerry Baldwin. After a trip to Italy to find new products, Schultz realized an opportunity to bring the café community environment he found in Italy to the United States and the Starbuck’s brand we all know today began to take form.

As someone who was born and raised in Seattle, I am very proud to say I am from the “home” of Starbucks coffee. The company of Starbucks, started in Pike Place Seattle in 1971, has become a globally known company. It is known for putting customers first, taking critique and fixing the issue, and treating its employees very well. I have worked for Starbucks in past years and I have found all of these to be true.

Starbucks worked closely with growers in Africa, South and Central America, and Asia-Pacific regions to insure the quality of its product.
