1. What do you think of the cities plan ? I believe it’s a good plan initially. In looking at the co-location of the City of Dallas and Kroeger plan. There, the City of Dallas has sufficient development moneys, no fiscal constraints. Grandtown however HAS fiscal constraints that have prevented them from renovating their existing library for years. Where is this money to build a modern new 9,000 square foot library coming from ? Perhaps they should review their existing financial situation, and come up with a financial plan that rehabilitates their existing building which will maintain the ‘publicness’ of the existing Grandtown location ? What are the advantages and disadvantages to the co-location ? Advantages: …show more content…

After the co-location, will the library still be a public organization ? Explain how you arrived at your answer. Will it loose some of its publicness ? Not in the full sense of the definition. As a result of the disadvantages listed above, the Public Library will not operate/function in the same way it did before its colcation in the same building/geographic location with Walmart. Lets look at the definition of Publicness. ‘The quality or state of belonging to the community; as, the publicness of property’. This has A problematic stance, in the area of Walmarts REIT tax situation, and tax evasion techniques. The co-location brings this to the mind of the Grandtree residents, and would cause a negative public sentiment. M. Shamsuel Haque National University of Singapore In his article, it is argued that while there has been an apparent eclipse in discourse regarding the Publicness or public quality of public service, the recent transition toward a market driven mode Of governance has created a serious challenge to such publicness. Public libraries are a vital part of society, and as a free-of-cost space that can immensely benefit anyone’s life, regardless of who they are, I believe that they deserve to be preserved. Libraries are a perfect example of everything that American democracy represents, they progress the growth and modernization of the American people, and they conform to society in a way where they stay true to what a library has always been while also allowing people to have fun and expand their horizons. While libraries originally were only a source of information where people could go to educate themselves beyond the school system, they have come to evolve in fascinating and valuable ways. As cater’s to society’s needs, we owe it to public libraries, and especially ourselves, to allow these ever-changing organizations to thrive.
Moreover, libraries are immensely used by those who have no access to the internet or aren't able to use technology as efficiently. For instance, there are people out there that need the libraries to access the internet such as Hispanics and the unemployed. According to Source C, Crandall says, “..having a community resource that is able to help people understand how to use digital technology and information..” With this assistance, their life is improved to accumulate in the lifestyle societies are already used to. Also, libraries are able to adapt to the changes of societies by using Microsoft Excel and Ebook, that people can actually interact with. (Source B) Libraries provide a storage for information in all forms as new technologies are produced. People are encouraged to access to information as effortlessly as others. This may give people the opportunity to find jobs, explore medical research, and experience new ideas. Not only libraries are relevant for helping those that need guidance but libraries also play a part in helping the young. For instance, the percentage of people who receive help from a librarian is gradually increasing. Younger groups of 43 percent are getting homework help. Some people may think librarians only know about the storage of books. This is actually not true. For example, not all young students can access to computers at home, therefore may need help with assignments and projects. Librarians are there to guide these students to do better and be successful in school. Librarians play a significant role in helping the young, therefore, accomplishing a better for future for the
Public libraries not only afford Americans the ability to access articles, books, and journals. The goal to serve the general public remained, although membership fees continued to constrain access to most libraries (Stubbefield & Keane, 1994). During the colonial time unlike today, there was limited access to library, however, it was only for individuals and families who could afford the access. Today, public libraries are funding by all citizens which allows for the communities in which it serves to have access to the libraries resources. Books, journey, newspapers and articles just as it was during the colonial era are still available.
There are fact that we need to have a major rethink in how exactly the library should be serving the public. Today, library still plays a vital role in the society. To survive in the digital age and stay relevant, public libraries need to be brave and innovative. The advent of new technologies has changed some of our reading habits. Some people think the traditional public libraries should develop to E-service libraries. But today, public libraries are at a turning point. To survive in the digital age and stay relevant, they must embrace both the physical and virtual.
During these planning meetings, a formalized plan for a new building took shape, resulting in the formation of a library space planning committee and then a library building committee, both comprised of community residents. Three community forums where arranged by the Board of Trustees and the Building Committee and discussions took place. In addition to conversation with public school students numerous informal conversations among community members and individuals involved with the project. The collaboration with the Lynnfield Capital Facilities Advisory Committee has solidified the library building as a priority for the town. The Friends of the Library organization have been advocates for the project, sharing information and marketing the project. The feedback from the meetings, forums, and conversations were incorporated in the various phases of the project, with the library continuingly providing updates on the projects. This has led to increased community responses, questions, and backing of the
For the last couple of years Horizon is running on a tight budget to open its own public library. In addition, I will attempt to look at the overall obstructions accompanying this issue in this city. The method used to gather data to analyze this
What makes this deal so pivotal to the evolution of Park Lane Casino is the fact that
When discussing about the future of Library Technicians she was a little unsure. She has seen over the years there has been a demand and then she has seen a decrease where there is little demand for this position. But as we move into a technical environment there needs to be someone to provide that knowledge and information for the public upon request. She mentioned that she had just read a blog about a Toronto Public Library Branch that is unmanned? We both had a hard time understanding how the operations of the facility would work in that
Libraries have long served the purpose of providing books and Internet access to those in need. However, libraries have become almost obsolete in society and do not really serve a purpose anymore. With the constant advancement of technology in the world, people no longer need to check out a book or use an old computer. Even though libraries offer many services to the public for generally no charge; libraries can no longer be justified as worth the hard-earned money of taxpayers due to the emergence of new technology, as well as the lack of funding available to maintain them.
Since their establishment, libraries have served as a gateway to knowledge and services that revolutionized the way the public attains information. Unlike many other institutions, public libraries have grown and evolved along with society by adopting new technology and offering resources tailored to the needs of their local community.
Secondly, public libraries offer services and activities for kids and families. Aside from books and computers, libraries often have many events and
Libraries are facing a struggle of identity brought about by technology. Once the internet became a household feature the library was no longer the most convenient information center for most patrons. So while dealing with new problems, library staff are also re-creating the library. But what of the old libraries endures into today’s libraries? More than most would assume, “Books and other library resources should be provided for the interest, information, and enlightenment of all people of the community the library serves.” (Library Bill of Rights). The library remains a place for all people to have equal access to information and services. The face has changed, but the heart remains
Many public libraries now have coffee shop. Creating zones in the library where noise and activity is acceptable and desirable, identifying each of the local cultures, expanding the audio-visual collections, and providing more access to global information. Libraries will have to create and test the kinds of library buildings and services that will most appeal to Gen Net.
For research Question 1, the quantitative approach included doing partial research using journal articles on multiple search engines under EBSCO database collection, to determine how demographics play a role in funding. For the second part, an experiment was conducted. The objective was to find out what places in the community are trying to make up for this lack of service (regardless if it is to bring their own profit or benefit the community). To see if they are obstructing the funding for a library or temporarily remedying for the absence of a public library.
Choosing how to manage library space and services involves planning and budgeting to have the necessary resources to bring about a new service. Learning commons are one solution that some academic libraries have started to adopt in order to increase their usage and relevancy. By creating a learning commons, academic libraries can help solidify their place among the campus community. Relationship building, interdepartmental planning, and services such as tutoring, writing centers, and various other student learning services can be located within the library’s designated learning common area. This paper presents learning commons as a possible solution to increase library relevancy and usage in academic libraries.
