Nearly every member of the United States executive branch, legislative branch and judicial branches are gathered tonight on January 12, as President Barack Obama delivers his seventh -and final- State of the Union address, during the new year of 2016 at The House Chamber in the U.S. Capitol. With this particular event being streamed on every news channel, I don’t think you could miss it. I feel honor and respect towards the president because he has to prepare a speech that makes sense and gathers people’s attention without offending them, but I wish he could’ve made the long speech not as tedious, so I wouldn’t want to fall asleep while listening to his monotonous tone. While watching my first State of the Union address, I found it fascinating that the State of the Union is so well-thought out to the point where one cabinet member can’t go in case of a detrimental emergency to the president. This year Jeh Johnson was chosen to be the “designated survivor” who wasn’t allowed to be near the vicinity of Capitol Hill. After watching CNN Student News today in class, I learned the First Lady sits in a designated box with others invited by the White House. Quoted by the administration, “The guests personify President Obama’s time in …show more content…
During the given speech President Obama touches on the topics about climate change, economic challenges and immigration challenges. The president used history to argue that “those who told us to fear the future” have failed to “restore past glory.” Climate change made the most sense to me because we are discussing this topic in science class, and as a generation we are constantly recycling and trying to erase our carbon
Madam Speaker, Vice President Biden, members of Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow Americans, our Constitution declares that from time to time the president shall give to Congress information about the state of our union. For 220 years, our leaders have fulfilled this duty. They've done so during periods of prosperity and tranquility, and they've done so in the midst of war and depression, at moments of great strife and great struggle.
The most interesting parts of Obama’s speech, to me, were the clarifications on his educational policies. His plans for higher education, such as halting student loan payments after 20 years or 10 years for public servants, seemed pretty cool to me. I’m not sure if taking government money to be used for student loans and giving it to parents while simultaneously stopping loan payments after 20 years is such a good idea. Pissing off the entire banking system might not be such a good idea in the long run. Grunts will be fired before CEOs cut their own bonuses, and I really don’t feel like that is particularly conducive to a good financial system.
As first stated by the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, the art of rhetoric in persuasive speaking is based upon the usage of the three key components, logos, ethos and pathos. Logos representing the usage of logic and reasoning within the speech or text, ethos representing the writer or speaker’s credibility and pathos representing how the speaker or author establishes an emotional connection with the audience. In former president Bill Clinton’s 2012 democratic national convention he relies heavily upon Aristotle’s persuasive speaking techniques to help convince the participants of the convention and those watching at home to reelect the nominee of the Democratic Party, current
On January 28, 1996, the NASA shuttle orbiter mission STS-51-L and the tenth flight of Space Shuttle Orbiter broke apart 23 seconds after its launch, making it one of the most important events in the history of spaceflight in terms of its aftermath on the audience who witnessed the explosion. The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, claiming the lives of seven crew members. It was later found that two rubber O-rings had failed because of the cold temperatures on the morning of the liftoff. Family, friends, and millions of T.V viewers witnessed the explosion, which led president Ronald Reagan to address the accident. Reagan planned to give his State of the Union Address, but after learning of the Space Shuttle disaster he postponed it for a week and addressed the nation at the Oval Office late afternoon. By using rhetorical appeals in his address to the nation, Reagan effectively addresses the nation and crews’ families about the explosion while comforting, inspiring, and honoring the views through the use of rhetoric.
In his State of the Union Address for 2016, Barack Obama uses logical and ethical arguments to emphasize shared ground rather than partisan disputes. He also taps into the audience’s desire to feel better about themselves and their country. By using humor and irony, Obama paints his opponents into corners, out of which it would require outrageous extremism to effectively squirm away. At its best, this approach demonstrates how much Americans actually have in common in a culture dominated by ideologically polarized cable-news channels, Facebook, and cultural tribes that increasingly live and socialize apart from one another. The president's technique throughout the speech is to frame issues through a rhetorical jujitsu to persuade his opponents,
The president's State of the Union address, delivered annually, is an opportunity to reflect on the nation's accomplishments across the previous twelve months and its goals in the year ahead. When the address delivered following the confirmation of the president's second term, it is an even more significant opportunity to set a course for the term ahead. In the address delivered by President Obama on February 12 before a Joint Congress, the course that he set forth would be distinguished by its progressive nature and the president's new sense of a public mandate.
So to every parent who dreams for their child, and every child who dreams for their future, I say these words to you tonight:
"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" is perhaps one of the most famous quotes of all time but it perfectly illustrates FDR's mindset. He believes that if the President, Congress, and the American people are too afraid to try anything new that could help fix the economy and move the country forward, then they will never make any progress. He then proceeds to mention some of the difficulties facing Americans during this time: increased taxes, farmers can no longer find markets for their produce, and the savings of many families are gone.
The title in the selection of Franklin D. Roosevelt's "State of the Union Address" tell that the work will be his view point on the State of the Union. In a State of the Union address the president discusses information of the Union as well as his stances. Roosevelt makes an observation stating "For there is nothing mysterious about the foundations of a healthy and strong democracy." Roosevelt seems confident that he knows how to provide such a "healthy and strong democracy." Later on in the selection, Franklin Roosevelt states that there are some social economical subjects that need "immediate improvement." He then provides examples of these subjects such as widening opportunities for adequate medical care. Roosevelt believes these type of
It is his second to last State of the Union speech, but his first with both houses of Congress in Republican control: On Tuesday night, January 20th, President Barack Obama itemized the achievements of his presidency and his devotion to raising the economic outlook for the middle class. In his address, he effectively outlined his legislative agenda for the up-and-coming year. He accomplishes this by employing a confident and optimistic tone, pronounced diction, and ample support; all in attempt to convince the public, Congress, as well as the 195 countries of the world of his proposals. Obama demonstrates in his 2015 Address, the ability to communicate with
The two artifacts, Abraham Lincoln's "Second Inaugural Address" and Emily Dickinson's "Success is Counted Sweetest" were both written around the time of the Civil War and have been categorized as rhetoric and poetry respectively. A poem is defined according to The American Heritage, Dictionary of English Language as "A verbal composition designed to convey experiences, ideas, or emotions in a vivid and imaginative way, characterized by the use of language chosen for its sound and suggestive power and by the use of literary techniques such as meter, metaphor, and rhyme", while rhetoric cannot be as clearly defined. There has always been an ongoing historical debate as how to define rhetoric, but we can identify its characteristics and functions.
The terrorist organization, Al Queda, attacked an important America landmark and economic structure. They completely destroyed the World Trade Center's twin towers in New York City, New York. These terrorists also made an attempt to destroy the Pentagon in Washington D.C., as well as another undetermined location. This tragic event happened on September 11, 2001 and it shocked the entire nation and other countries across the World. President George W. Bush addressed the American people on the night of the attacks. He then addressed Congress on September 20, 2001. In both speeches, the President tells his views and possible solutions to the problem as well as others' views. President Bush assures the people and Congress and Congress that something will be done about these attacks and that he will not stand for what had happened.
This articles starts off by first talking about a speech given by the President. In his speech he talks about how climate change "constitutes a serious threat to the global security, and an immediate
“He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.” On Tuesday, January 25, 2011 9:00 pm in the chamber of the House of Representatives Sergeant at Arms Wilson Livingood announced with great pride the arrival of the President of the United States. As President Obama worked his way to the podium members of Congress and distinguished guests greeted him with tremendous respect. Congress sat among each other commingled; consequently, it provided a healthier atmosphere in the chamber with less animosity. Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Vice President Joe Biden sat behind President Barack Obama as he
“There’s one issue that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than any other, and that is the urgent threat of a changing climate.” - Barack Obama. Climate change has been a popular topic of discussion, because of the threat to our environment. The world will forever be changed if climate change isn’t taken into serious consideration and not in a good way. Climate change has been a popular topic of discussion, because of the threat to our environment. Climate change has had many negative effects, for example, damage to coral reefs, the increase of wildfires, and most importantly rising sea levels. The damage to our earth cannot always be undone nevertheless it can make some things disappear forever.
