His books have sold over three-hundred-fifty-million copies. Not only has his love for the horror genre caused his sales to flourish in the literary world, but also in film. Stephen Kings’ works have influenced the horror and thriller genres far beyond literature. They themselves have become some of the most famous examples of the genres in literature. Stephen Edward King was born on September the twenty-first of 1947. He was born in Portland, Maine. (“Stephen King Biography”) His parents were Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury. Shortly after the birth of Stephen, the couple split, forcing King and his siblings to live with his mother. (DeFilippo) King first began writing at the ripe, young age of twelve years. (Konstantin) He graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in nineteen-sixty-six. He also graduated from the Unversity of Maine in nineteen-seventy with a degree in english. (DeFilippo) His first book “Carrie” was a huge success after its’ publication. (“Stephen King Biography”) At the time of publishing his books such as; “Salem’s Lot,” “The Shining,” “Firestarter,” “Cujo,” and “IT,” he also published books under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. A few of Richard Bachman works include; “The Rage,” “The Long Walk,” and “The Running Man”. (“Stephen King Biography”) King decided to write under Richard Bachman because he was afraid the public wouldn’t accept more than one book from an author within a year. (“Stephen King Biography”) “Salem’s Lot” and “The Shining” are both some of King’s greatest hits in the film industry. (Freeman) Other examples of Kings’ literary works to film would be; “Firestarter,” “Cujo,” and “IT.”
