In the essay Civilized Vampires Versus Savage Werewolves: Race and Ethnicity in Twilight, Natalie Wilson argues for an examination of how werewolves and vampires are depicted in the hit book trilogy Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Wilson has a doctorate in women's studies and literature, and has written a great deal of books and essays upon the Twilight series and many other monster-based book through the lense of a feminist writer. (Wilson). She posted regularly on her blog while all the Twilight movies came out, and she’s recently been writing another book and editing old essays. In every time period there is always a writers that dominates a certain genre. These individuals are masters in their fields and can evoke the deepest feeling in their readers. There are many of these writers in every generation for every genre. In the field of horror two writers should spring to everyone's mind. Edgar Allen Poe and Stephen King. Both writers have made their marks in literature for exploring the darker sides of imagination producing writings that can leave readers shaken from freight. Although both authors are from different time periods they have similarities in writing that shows their skills.
Horror is the genre that keeps the reader on their toes for nights upon end. It keeps them thinking. Thinking about how cruel and disturbing someone, or something, could possibly be. Thinking about what in the world happens to a character after the story drops off in a cliffhanger. Thinking about the probability that the events in the narrative could transpire in real life. Thinking about how likely it is for those things to happen to the reader. Refusing to look out their window in fear of seeing the glimpse of a murderous face, and listening to every sound with acute accuracy, praying that the noise is not one of a stranger creeping up the stairs. Scary accounts make the reader live in fear whenever the
A major event that allowed Stine to come up with these amazing fictional stories, was random conversations he had with strangers. Stine once said “ I get ideas from all kinds of places...people send me things like newspaper clippings of stories they found” (UXL Junior DISCovering Authors 2003). He also said that one of the books he wrote was based on a conversation he had with a stranger while on vacation. This shows how much he takes other people's ideas into consideration. “Stine agrees that the merit of his work lies in the books’ entertainment value” ( UXL Junior DISCovering Authors 2003). Meaning he knows that the quality of his work will have an impact once people start reading the books. Stine knows exactly what the audience wants, which is why he knows the amount of horror and humor that needs to be added into everyone of his books. This is a reason why Stines writing has reached so many people over the last twenty years. An important event that lead to the way that Stines writes his book is due to his son. “Stine gets lots of information from his teenage son, and does not use slang in his books”(UXL Junior DISCovering Authors 2003). A reason for that is because he wants people to understand what is being said, even if thirty years have gone
Stephen King’s “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft” is a marvelous and unusual text. Within the first part of his book, also called C.V., he explains his life experience up to the day he finishes the book. King expresses his life with multiple literary elements that assist the readers on imagining his life of adventures, catastrophes, fears, and loves. Following are three of my favorite passages that caught my attention.
For instance Stephen King is known as the master of horror; I have read all his older novels. Watched a few of his movies and discovered the movies are ‘B’ rated compared to the books. His newer work is a little more farfetched for me more like Sci-Fi,
Through Stephen King’s writing in On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, in the section title, “Toolbox”, five writing tips that I take away are being content with your vocabulary skills, constantly refreshing grammar usage (by perhaps reading Warriner’s English Grammar and Composition), moving away from fear, having the proper organizational/style, and committing to your writing. The first tip of being content with your vocabulary skills becomes a useful tip because it seems to be like a “relaxing” notice. A notice to tell us, the writers, that it’s acceptable to not have the vocabulary level of Shakespeare; a vocabulary that shouldn’t be overdressed if not used in proper context. This gives any writer the capability to be confident with their
Stine is a good example of horror because the only reason that it didn’t scary me was because the book isn’t for people my age as you can tell from some of the stuff he says. For instance, when Stine says “To late. The gnomes grabbed her. Giggling loudly, they pinned her arms back. Dragged her the porch steps.
Stephen King has been a remarkable and honored author throughout the years. Stephen King is known for his genre focus, horror. His novels introduce innovative gruesome concepts that no one would ever imagine. The vast majority of his films demonstrate the horrific theme, murder. The inspired movie from The Shining novel, The Shining, directed by Stanely Kubrick, and Stand by me, inspired by The body, directed by Rob Reiner, and Children of the Corn directed by Fritz Kiersch meet the theme criteria using children to express suspense in child horror.
Unless the story is about something the writer knows nothing about then there shouldn’t be hard facts throughout the story. The research that might need to be put in a story should be incorporated in the story not stated in it. If a list of facts interrupts the flow of the story it loses the flow of it. I agree with Stephen King when he says, “That’s where research belongs: as far back in the background and the back story as you can get it.” Research is boring to most people when it does not matter. The main reason someone is reading the piece of writing is for the story of it not the facts about it.
Stephen King is arguably one of the greatest writers of our time. He has not only written over 60 books, but most of his novels end up on the New York Times best seller list. He has a loyal fan base, which always are willing to endure his lengthy books because they know that it will be worth their time in the end. King himself, though, has had to deal with a lot of his own demons. He has struggled with both drugs and alcohol (How Stephen King, programwp.com). While King's alcoholism and drug addiction would eventually lead to rehab, it was during this time of the advisory that King would write many of his greatest works.
Stephen King is a contemporary writer who has written many books in his lifetime. In his novel Misery, he discusses the consequences or bad sides of being famous. This normal average man, other than being a world famous author, acts as a regular individual in his daily life. In Stephen King’s Misery, King uses Paul Sheldon, as a doppelganger of himself to describe the horrors of being a famous person in the worst situation, showing readers that it is not so bad to be a regular person.
Stephen King is perhaps the most widely known American writer of his generation, yet his distinctions include publishing as two authors at once: Beginning in 1966, he wrote novels that were published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. When twelve, he began submitting stories for sale. At first ignored and then scorned by mainstream critics, by the late 1980’s his novels were reviewed regularly in The New York Times Book Review, with increasing favor. Beginning in 1987, most of his novels were main selections of the Book-of-the-Month Club, which in 1989 created the Stephen King Library, committed to keeping King’s novels “in print in hardcover.” King published more than one hundred short stories (including the collections Night Shift,
