Stereotypes In Mexican Culture

Stereotypes are a form of prejudice everyone will once experience in their lifetime. Stereotypes are centered around an individual's race, gender, social class, religion, and age. They have been known to be elements people use to make judgments and subjectify people to one key feature. As Gordon Allport states, “ To state the matter technically, a noun abstracts from a concrete reality some one features and assembles different concrete realities only with respect to this one feature”(364). Mr.Allport’s words can be summed up to say stereotypes have been used as key fundamentals to associate one feature or aspect of a person with a group that represents it, typically in an unfavorable way.

There are many different stereotypes in the world today. They can be used for different categories like age, gender and race. Stereotypes are formed by the media, passed down from many generations and also just the populations need to understand the social world around us. Racial stereotypes make up large portion of stereotypes in today's society. Racial stereotypes can be used for comedic effect and our found to be funny by a majority of people, but they can also be depicted as hate to an ethnic group if it goes too far. One example of a race effected by stereotypes are Asian people. They have many stereotypes that have developed over the years. I would say we’ve all been stereotyped at some point, be it due to your sex, gender, race, or religious beliefs, the list goes on. Some are blissfully oblivious when in the face of being disrespected and or stereotyped, some just don’t care to look further into the situation. Others simply “take the high road”, doing the right thing even if it’s not easy nor popular in a difficult situation. Most often we can’t help the labels which society places on us, we were born with the skin color we have, our values ingrained into us by our families, and so forth. Personally, I’ve faced stereotypes relating to my race.

Stereotypes form the basis for prejudice, which in turn is used to justify discrimination and attitudes. They can be positive as well as negative.” Stereotypes exist within any social group, and social group or cliques which are groups of people who share similar characteristics and interests such as the ones priorly said.

Drugs and violence are universal. Although not all drugs cause violence some drugs like alcohol, methamphetamine, and crack cocaine do and can have horrible results. Some of the behavior that these drugs can cause are: domestic violence, sexual assault, homicides, and property crimes. Although horrible things do happen people still use them and crimes like these happen too much. This is a social issue because people see this as a norm. This shouldn't be a norm and people need to start realizing that.

First of all, what are stereotypes? A stereotype is a quality assigned to groups of people related to their race, nationality, and sexual orientation, but there is not only one type of stereotype there are actually two types of stereotypes. There are positive and negative ones. For example, a positive stereotype about asians would be that they are smart and polite. A negative one would be something like asians have small eyes or they’re short. Some people may get offended by these and other people will not care about it at all. These are effects from the stereotypes.

In life, there is a common ground on which most every person can relate. At one time or another, we have all been promoters of or victims of the unremitting nature of stereotypes. According to the Webster’s dictionary, a stereotype is defined as “a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group.” Most stereotypes take on a negative form and are based on characteristics such as age, gender, race, status, and personal beliefs. Generally speaking, the greatest problem that arises with stereotypes is that they judge group of people by the characteristics and actions of their ancestors, rather than on an individual basis. Besides boys reacting differently than what I expected, appearances on what boys are supposed to look like affected my views when I was younger. Watching novellas with my mother I used to looking at latino men who were tall and ripped, as I got older I started to notice that not all Mexican males were not buff and over six foot, and not all women wear tight dresses showing off a lot of cleavage. To rephrase it I do not want to say that latinos are not attractive, it's just I feel uncomfortable when people say that latinos are only attractive on tv. I feel that the stereotype of novella actors have imprinted an idea what latinos are supposed to look like, I constantly here that latinos are super sexy and good in bed, as if we are only good

Stereotypes can be defined as sweeping generalizations about members of a certain race, religion, gender, nationality, or other group. They are made everyday in almost every society. We develop stereotypes when we are unable or unwilling to obtain all the information we would need to make fair judgments about people or situations. By stereotyping, we assume that a person or group has certain characteristics. Quite often, we develop these ideas about people who are members of groups with which we have not had firsthand contact. Stereotyping usually leads to unfair results, such as discrimination, racial profiling, and unnecessary violence, all behaviors which need to be stopped.

I am a Hispanic college student and naturally, that must mean I must have underwent various challenges and tribulations to get to where I am at. My mom must speak poor English and my dad must work in construction. I am a Latina so that must mean I am feisty and obnoxiously loud. I must be all of that because I am of Latino descent, right? Negative.

“He’s a young Latino what is he doing in this neighborhood? he must be lost, he has to be poor.” that’s just one of the stereotypes I hear often. “Hispanic people are poor” When in fact most Hispanics are well off. Yet repeatedly I have heard that stereotype in movies, songs, shows, and school. I have been through this many times as I have lived up through 19 years of existence. Its something that I have gotten accustomed too.

Does stereotyping have a different meaning towards you then it does to other people? When someone brings up a stereotype what is the first thing you think of? We might see a person in a different way than others and think that they can't do what other people can do because of their race, culture, or even their gender. When you see someone your first instinct is their appearance, you will judge them and make comments to yourself and think of what they can or cannot do.

Given our current entertainment choices such as television, movies, or social media platforms it is not difficult to find a portrayal of a stereotype. There are many stereotypes out there in the world about certain races, religions, or even genders. Some stereotypes that are currently very popular would be “black people are ghetto and uneducated” or “all Muslims are terrorists”, yet time and time again we see these stereotypes being broken such as when we encounter a black doctor or a Muslim who has served in the military. As a young Latina woman who is of Mexican decedent I have not been exempt from the multiple stereotypes that surround the Latino culture.
