The Dred Scott Decision of 1857 ruled that African-Americans, even ones who were not enslaved, were not protected under The Constitution and could never be citizens. This brings up questions that will be answered in this paper. Should slaves be American citizens? Is it morally correct for one to own another human? Does the Dred Scott decision contradict The Declaration of Independence which states that every man is created equal?

As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack out into the night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth ever since.

Boxing, an official sanctioned sport in the early 20th century, is a sport that is known as one of the most violent and physically demanding sports on the earth. Professional boxers that get paid to fight must be in top shape in order to preform at the highest level. Being a professional boxer is a tough life. Boxers train hard for many months leading up to one fight and either win, lose, knock out the opponent or even get knocked out. The sport has been around for centuries, but has most recently taken off over the last 100 years. It is a multibillion dollar industry with fighters taking home hundreds of thousands of dollars if not even millions of dollars for big matches. In his novel Papa Jack, Roberts tells the story of the famous African American boxer Jack Johnson. He details the boxers rise to fame and fortune and his downward spiral that would soon follow. In Papa Jack, Roberts displays life of a professional boxer through firsthand accounts with events that happened during Johnson’s life and shows how boxing not only influenced his life but also how he influenced the African American community.

Shawn Johnson is famous for her outstanding performance in the Olympic gymnastics games. Twenty-four year old gymnasts Shawn Johnson was born on January 19, 1992 in Des Moines, Iowa. Shawn Johnson attended the Olympics at age 16 and won a gold medal in the balance beam event for the U.S.A. Shawn Johnson participated on the show Dancing with the Stars with her partner Mark Ballas. Shawn Johnson is an influential person because she was born in Iowa, went to the Olympics in 2008, and won a gold medal on the balance beam in the U.S Olympics.

In 1947, Florida State University named itself the Seminoles. They did this in order to show the strength of and the pride in the Seminole heritage of Florida. Contributions of a lesser known African American, John Horse, helped to define the Seminole people as the “unconquered people” that they are so celebrated for in Florida today.

Jackie Robison was the first African- American person to play in the Major League of Baseball in the United States. Jackie Robison was the wake up call of the controversy in American Baseball history. Robison was a hero to many, the one man who stood up to play in the major league, were it was then “a game for white mans only,” according to many. He was constantly receiving threats, been yelled at, throw things at and most importantly constant racism towards him. He became a legacy, not only in baseball, but also in the American life. He fought his civil rights, where he confronted and face others who had nothing but hatred.

Billy Gene Phillips Sr. was born to Clara Faye and Carl James Phillips on January 15, 1958 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. My grandfather grew up in Oklahoma City for the most part of his life. He was raised with three siblings, James Dean Phillips, Donna Faye Conway, and Virginia Ann Terry. He was the second to youngest child in his family. At the age of sixteen he met my grandmother Bonnie Walker, which later married on February 6, 1976 at the age of nineteen. They lived in Dibble, Oklahoma, where they raised five kids, David Phillips, Billy Phillips Jr., Bonnie Phillips, Regenia Phillips, and Virginia Phillips. He had seven grandchildren. In 2003 he fought his son Billy Phillips Jr. In a custody battle for three of his grandchildren, because he didn't believe they were given the best life.

The south for a good while was always fond of using slavery as a cheap source of work. The increase in the number of slaves was when John Rolfe became one of the first to cultivate tobacco in the so called “New World back then in the 17th century. There was good money to be made about the amount of labor that went into the tobacco cultivation was harch, hence why slaves were used. Ever since then, it is obvious to note that slaves dominated the aspect of southern life. Whether that be economically, socially or politically, slaves played an important role in each category.

Caesar Rodney, the first of the delegation from Delaware, was a native of that state, and was born about the year 1730. His birth-place was Dover. The family, from which he was descended, was of ancient date, and is honorably spoken of in the history of early times. We read of Sir Walter De Rodeney, of Sir George De Rodeney, and Sir Henry De Rodeney, with several others of the same name, even earlier than the year 1234. The story of Sam Ferris, an eleven year old boy who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is “a life threatening cancer that affects the nervous system (Make-A-Wish 2012).” Sam always has this passion for baseball and his wish was for a baseball field to be built in his backyard, which would allow him to play with his friends whenever he wanted. Make-A-Wish knew that this was his one true wish, so they asked help from volunteers and donors to make his wish come true. The University of Mississippi and Itawamba Community College’s ground crew decided that they would contribute to building the baseball field. Those in the community generously donated the materials needed to build the baseball field such as “fencing, backstop, sod, clay,

Jerrel Muse Jr is well rounded in all areas. When he was six he demonstrated strength in reading, writing, speaking, listening and math. Now that he is eight, his scores were average to above average in word word reading and spelling. On the verbal portion Jerrel Jr scores were all above the one standard deviation. He is also doing very well in math, he understanding the concepts very quickly is and working in a fourth grade math group in third grade. Jerrel now into soccer has a real knack for sports.

After arriving at the Arlington National Cemetery the leaders of 99 different nations gathered for the state funeral of President John F. Kennedy. President Kennedy was laid to rest accompanied with the full military honors that were stationed on a slope below the base of the Arlington House. The grave of the fallen president was marked by an eternal flame that was lit by non other than the president’s wife, Mrs. Kennedy. This eternal flame is a representation of the eternal mourning of America due to the loss of such a strong and caring man that led their nation through good and difficult times.

Achievement has no color (“Abraham Lincoln”). Being a successful athlete takes dedication and talent. Now, being the first ever African American athlete on an all-white league takes guts! For Jack Robinson, he tackled an early life of poverty and racist threats all while becoming a legend.

As I was reading James Eunice’s biography tonight, it struck me with a feeling of despair, but, also, with a desire to spread the gospel. Throughout our lives, there are many moments that we just let pass by, not sharing God’s word with those which do not know him and later feeling regret for our actions. While this is accurate for a lot of people, from what I have read and heard about James, he was beyond doubt a remarkable young man because he shared God’s word every day with anyone who would listen. If everyone was like James and loved people, life, and God just as much as he did, I believe the world would be a way better place. So, from this moment on, I am going to make it a point to try and be just as remarkable as he was and share God’s kindness, love, and forgiveness with everyone that I meet.
