1) Explain the relevance and rhetorical purpose of telling stories about the past in The Iliad, Gilgamesh, or Antigone.

Epics include both reality and speculation. Apart from epics reflects the history of humanity, the storytellers presented epics through series of flashbacks. There are many reasons of referring to the past while telling the stories. Firstly, many epics included Iliad, start with the middle of the story, not from beginning. Thus the storyteller needs referring to the past to make the story more understandable. In the Iliad, the story begins after the war between Achaeans and Trojans. After describing the situation of Achaeans army, he adverted to the past and explain the conflict between Agamemnon and Achilles. In this way the people who are listening or reading this epic can make links between the Trojan War and determining role of Achilles in this war. Because of Agamemnon took Achilles war prize and humiliated him he wanted to avenge his insult. For taking his revenge Achilles wanted his mother to talk with Zeus and persuades him about supporting Trojans. As a result, storyteller can advert to the past to make the epic clear.
