This Strategic Development Report (SDR) on The Princes Trust Charity is to review the strategy of the charity and undertake a process of analysis, formulation and review of its implementation (AFI) as outlined by Rothaermel, F (2013, pg20). This report will then outline strategic recommendations for the charity and finally critically evaluate these recommendations. Strategy, strategic thinking and strategic process (AFI) for organizations is important. Porter, M.E (1980) outlined the strategy and competiveness and he developed the term of ‘Strategic competitive advantage’ (SCA) or the consistent out performance of other organizations in its field. A good example of where an organization gained competitive advantage can be seen through the emergence of Google’s search engine dominance, even when competitors (Microsoft and Yahoo) in the early 1990’s were well placed to establish themselves. Sutherland, A (2012, Pg 4). “What turned Google into the internet business phenomenon it is today, was realizing they could advertisers to pay for sponsored links”. If Microsoft had seen the value or potential of online search and made different decisions then they may have a much higher market share. According to Net Market Share, (2015) Google has 70% of the market, with BING and Yahoo with just 9%.

SWA went from activities and tasks that blended together, molding a strategic fit, which transpired into their competitive advantage against the competition to a company that focused on the bottom-line. Untouchable for decades, until the new top management changed SWA’s activities, which now threatens their strategy and competitive advantage. To find out what SWA is up against now, one assesses SWA’s activities, which explain how they worked toward the competitive advantage before moving on to what occurred to change the situation, making SWA’s competitive advantage fade into history unless the organization chooses to mend their ways or create a new strategy and competitive advantage.

The RTP chapter of ASHA, a non-profit that supports basic education for the underprivileged in India is the brain child of Ms. Anubha Gupta, a close friend. Along with couple of others, I was a founding member. While she led the administrative works such as identifying projects to support in India and coordinating with the parent chapter in Atlanta, I was tasked with planning events to raise funds. However, I quickly realized that the traditional fund raising methods such as awareness events, charity dinners and proposals might not work in our case, a new foundation.

When focused both internally and externally, such a strategic plan allows a public or non-profit entity to establish itself as a high impact organization. A high impact organization is an organization that is focused on creating extraordinary levels of social impact. It is an organization that moves beyond focusing on other organizations and entities as just competitors and instead looks upon these organizations as potential collaborators with which to develop joint policies and coordinated actions, which collectively will have a greater impact on society than will the unilateral actions of the non-profit.
Competitive advantage is explained by Mahoney and Pandian (1992) as the function of industry analysis, organizational governance and the firm’s effects in the form of resource advantages and strategies.
