Strayer University: The Value Of Furthering My Education

In the essay, Two Years Are Better Than Four, the author, Liz Addison, gives her opinion on the importance of community college. The main point that she is trying to convey to her audience is that going to a community college is not harming the essential college experience. For some individuals, such as herself, the two-year college experience is exactly what they need to further their education. Community college is an affordable place that can “foster dreams (Addison)”. Throughout the reading, Addison makes compelling statements to prove the point which she is trying to make.

The author was inspired to write this essay because he experienced college the same way all freshmen will experience college. He went through the same exact struggles that they are bound to go through at some point in it, so he was motivated to help them survive school and stick with it no matter how tough it gets. He consistently emphasizes how magnificent the rewards are if one finishes all of college.

How many can remember middle school through high school years being full of the constant reminder to think about one’s future after graduation? For the most part, this would involve attending a good college to further one’s education. Caroline Bird wrote her essay “College is a Waste of Time and Money” because she has seen throughout her many lectures at various college campuses that there is a great number of college students that given another acceptable option would not be there. She emphasizes that they are only there because it is either the social norm, required by some parents, or the believed thought that it is the only way to become successful. Bird effectively informs and to some extent persuades the reader by using logos, with the help of ethos and pathos, that college is not intended for everyone but there are many who attend anyways because of these reasons.

Capital punishment has been around since the eighteenth century, but it ceases to exist in the modern era for countries like Canada. Canada’s death penalty law was instated in 1759, but later abolished in 1976 (Statistics Canada).Along with being an extremely controversial topic, capital punishment has been sought to be safer for crime victims, cheaper and a better deterrent than prisons. However when looking at the facts it can be argued that the death penalty not only decreases crime rates and costs less, it is simply morally wrong.

She recalls the struggles, the fun, her failures and even her success in the end (Harding, 2011). The personal story shows the real road it takes with decisions we make “when entering college, Harding wrote that she began college because she felt it was expected of her”(Harding, 2011). College students often make choices based on what they perceive as pressure to do so by others like councilors, parents and even society. They enter college thinking this is what my plan should look like and not making choices that are the best for them. Harding said that in the end “ we all become graduates of one of the finest universities in the world- and already, nobody much cared how we got there”(Harding,2011). To me this shows that even if you pass by the skin of your teeth, you can still fail in the end. A diploma is not the end result that maters the most. Students need to choose colleges that appeal to their needs and goals and not just go to get a diploma. If students spend no time studying weather boarded or not liking their studies, then what difference does the diploma make in the end. Students would just have a degree that often goes unused in life but the costs is ever mounting to these students. Going to college was always an important aspect to me. Coming from a home where the highest level of education was a GED, making something of myself has been a substantial goal that I’ve always yearned. She gives numerous reasons to why college is not the best choice for everyone.

Instead of feeling pressure to conform as a student at the University of Georgia, I have found that being in college has made me value the importance of a higher education more so than I ever had before.
