The Author, Phillip Lopate, Introduces himself in “The Essay, An Exercise in Doubt” as an essayiest; a professional essay writer. This was an interesting discovery for me, when I think of an author I never considered that there was a market for writing essays alone. Lopate introduction alone sparked my interest. I was not sure where the essay would lead me but was aware that I would be engaged and informed.

To understand how piece was written, or to look back on his architect analogy, it is important to ask questions, assessing what “construction” techniques were effective in building a text. Every author has a different writing style in comparison. They convey their messages in multiple ways; using different tones to evoke certain moods on their readers. Some authors use a few different ways to catch their audiences attention; persuading them using logic, ethics and emotion.
The syntax that he uses may be more informal instead of formal academic language. He also uses good organizational structure to support his argument. He frequently initiates a new idea with a hook to get the readers attention or a transitionary phrases to segway into new ideas which makes the reading flow well. Then the idea is supported by either an anecdote from people or scholars that were interviewed or a statistic. This helps make his reasoning come across as persuasive and maybe bring resemblance to the readers own experiences that they can relate

In attempts of presenting himself, he shares a bit of his personal life, often stated his views, and attempts to show respect to the readers. Before expressing his opinion, he begins his essays with his personal and family experiences. An example of this would be a narration about his "teenage son recently informing him that there is an internet quiz to test [about] narcissism," establishing that he is a parent and plans to discuss this matter (online). This helps him build onto his idea about narcissism and his reaction to this matter as a parent today. As well, there are times when he would state his position on a point he makes. A few times he would say, "I believe," or "in my view," to show support - or not - to his points (online). This allows him to validate his position to the readers, on the topics he chose to write about. He also attempts to show his respect to the audience – which I thought was his weakest link and sometimes contradicting to sharing his opinion. With a taunting tone, he mentions, "even our egos are getting fat," and then in another essay, he writes he is "not judging here," when he writes four-page essays of his opinion on how people should change (online). I thought he would have done better to establish his character though ethos was not his strong suit in most of his essays compared to logos and

I also think that Orwell provided good, clear, and simple examples to have better understanding to his argument. I also believe that he explained how language could affect thought in a moral way.
Clive Thompson’s “Smarter Than You Think” reflects upon the idea that technology is her to help us more than we think, rather than the popular belief that technology is ruining the way we think. Thompson believes that the pair between human and technology is making us smarter. Along with that, our minds are slowly adapting to the use of technology, advancing our thinking. Lastly, the relationship between technology and human, has brought humanity closer than ever with the ability to communicate with anyone, anywhere, at any time. Clive Thomason believes the stronger the bond between humans and technology, the smarter we can become; I also alongside with Thompson believe this is true, and if so us as humans need to embrace the use of
Possibly the three most important components a writer must understand are audience, genre, and rhetorical situation. When reading critically we become acquainted with these concepts therefore become better writers ourselves. While learning about rhetorical writing and composition we have analyzed Billy Collins “ Commencement Address at Choate- Rosemary Hall” , Martin Luther King Jr’s “letter from Birmingham Jail” and Lloyd Bitzer’s essay on “Rhetorical Situation”. In this paper I will analyze and make connections between the concepts of audience, genre and rhetorical situation in connection to the fore-mentioned readings. In doing so I will focus on how each used these concepts as means to communicate their main ideas and purpose.
In today’s society one would not be able to communicate effectively with the world if writing was not involved. People all around the world send emails, texts, and letter to numerous amounts of individuals each second. Talking on the phone is slowly becoming a thing of the past while the writing side of technology is taking over. The meaning of writing is changing in society. Writing used to be specifically for academics or the occasional letter to a loved one. As time has passed writing has taken more forms and more meanings. In the world we live in now writing is classified as texting, emailing, instant messaging, and even comments or tweets on social media. Although writing has these multiple new forms, it still holds its academic side strongly. Everything with meaning in turn affects a person’s day to day life. Writing has the effect of making one more intellectual. Writing has become a bridge between communication and the cultures and people of today’s society. It gives way for different options in stating sentences or phrases. (Olson). Each affect should change with age. As a person grows older, their writing styles should mature and take on a more professional aspect.
