When Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States in 2009, people expected change and for him to be successful in his role. This was backed by the highest popular vote in over 20 years and having the largest democratic win since Lyndon Johnson in 1963 (p793.(2010).Jacobs,LR., King,DS.) During his first few months in office he had 60% approval ratings, and was able to push for certain policies due to the strong Democrat Congress. However after his first 5 years in office his approval ratings fell, and his formerly Democratic Congress has weakened over the last two congressional elections with the Republican numbers in Congress rising to their highest majority since 1949((2014)infoplease). The president of the USA’s role is one of head of state, head of government, commander in chief and of head diplomat. Obamas strengths and weakness will be assessed with these roles in mind. The role of head of state will be assessed first by comparing approval ratings in order to decide whether the president is represents the people. Secondly the role head of government will be assessed, this will be done by looking at his successes regarding policies that were important in his campaign and election as President, and what their current state is in terms of successful or failed policies.
