By taking stress-level assessments, I have determined that my main stressors are mostly triggered by school and time management. Back when I was a student athlete, it was extremely hard for me to organize my time and be productive. I had a job working a minimum of 30 hours a week, on top of practice and games and other sports related commitments, along with regularly attending classes and finding the time to complete my homework. I was always a very social person, so not having that time where I could socialize was hard for me.I constantly felt burdened by obligations and responsibilities. I now realize that I also stress about school and what the future may hold. I am currently in a position where I am considering changing my major, however,
The Science of Stress is an informative video by National Geographic detailing the body response to stress. Stress is the body’s way of getting itself prepared to face a challenge. It is constant problem that everyone has to deal with. It was originally meant to aid our survival, but over time it has become dangerous and lethal to our well being. National Geographic’s video gives us a scientific view of what goes on in our bodies when experiencing stress and its effects on it.
The Family Systems Stressor-Strength Inventory (FS3I) is an instrument used to evaluate and measure stressful conditions occurring in families and assists nurses and families in developing intervention activities. By using this instrument, strengths and weaknesses of family functioning can be identified. The FS3I involves independent completion of the instrument by each member of the family prior to the interview with the clinician. After completion of the instrument, the clinician assesses the family on each of the stressful conditions from a general and specific perspective. The strengths and coping mechanisms of the family are also evaluated. Both quantitative and qualitative data are used to define the intervention needed to establish equilibrium
There are many different broad definitions of stress and how to cope with it, known as stress management.
As a Richland Collegiate High School student, I am always attacked by stressors in my academic life. The stress provoked by school-related objects often bled into my home and social life. It created an unhealthy environment where I felt weighed down by the stress. Due to the stress, I often lost my appetite and started sleeping less. My mother worried that I was depressed or that I was developing an eating disorder, but I just did not know how to pick myself up and just get things done. I lacked motivation, self-control, and a healthy balance of work and relaxation. Throughout the course, I have been picking up on some of the strategies I can use to help alleviate my stress and subsequently improve other aspects of my life.
After marking the points for the Holmes-Rahe life stress inventory and reading what the point value means, I definitely disagree with the assessment. There are two reasons I disagree with the inventory; the first being, this inventory takes a snapshot of past events and does not reference future factors that may or may not affect the events you had selected. The second reason is, I do not understand how some of the events one the inventory would add a higher chance of having a stress related health breakdown. For example, a promotion, vacation, or holidays should be life events which lowers stress for an individual. I agree that individuals deal with life events and stress in different ways, which is why I believe inventories, health quizzes, and health questions should be tailored to the individual taking them. Perhaps then people will have a more accurate picture in order to properly plan, organize, and prioritize their life events thereby limiting stress and allowing more control over stress related health.
Perceived stress may have an impact on an individual’s overall health. Many believe higher perceived stress would lead to more detrimental health impacts or vice versa. However, previous studies have presented mixed results.
Ever since elementary school we have had to take tests. Most of these tests were simple and only had to do with one subject. Other tests are rather large and consist of multiple subject and there is alloted time to take these tests. These tests are standard tests that are mandatory for everyone in school to take. The purpose of the tests is to measure how well your education is going. Since you take them year after year you can see how you are progressing in your intelligence. The only problem is that there is an enormous amount of weight placed on doing well on these tests. Therefore classes give tests with similar format and questions. Students are also taught to be good test takers. With all this testing there can be unnecessary stress put on students and teachers out of fear of doing poorly. Standardized testing, while a good measurement of learning, often puts more stress on students than necessary.
Stress is a condition that has continuously plagued nursing students while in the nursing program. The stress nursing students experience is caused by a variety of different factors, such juggling between school life and personal life or the financial strain many students face. Stress also stems from educational factors, such as the lack of effective time management or proper prioritization, lack of critical thinking skills, and/or lack of clinical experience. Research has shown that a major source of stress for nursing students is the lack of clinical experience, critical thinking skills, and clinical skills. This paper will discuss the importance high fidelity clinical simulation to reduce the stress of baccalaureate nursing students and
In my work place setting, I work for a agency who works with families with children that are autistic or have behavioral problems. Moreover, with my job being an agency there are significant amount of flaws within this organization. Agencies in general seem to have many flaws. Furthermore, I experience a few stressors that effect me daily. One stressor that I experience is having to go to weekly supervision every Friday without pay. This is a stressor for me because my job location is not as close to my house, granted about 25 minutes from my home. So, the stress for me is driving all the way to my job location just to speak on actions of my client that are consistent each week. Other jobs that I have applied to previously compensate their workers for supervision weekly or give the option to have phone conferences about our clients.
Scenarios of Stress Directions: Get into groups, then look over your assigned stress scenario. As a team read the scenario that is assigned to you and talk about: “Is this good or bad stress?” , “Why is this stressful”, “Was this situation avoidable or inevitable?” , “What steps can be done to avoid a bad stressful event?”. Keep in mind the people in your group may register eustress and distress in a different way.
If I were to imagine a friend just lost his job, which helped him cover tuition costs, then I would assume he would go through stress and I could describe his potential actions to this job loss. This friend would experience stress, which is the physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses to events seen as threatening or challenging. Stress is often the result when basic drives are unmet which is what the friend is experiencing. My friend would have several symptoms of stress can include physical fatigue, more than usual mood swings, depression, concentration problems, memory problems, recurring illness, smoking/drinking more than usual, anger, irritability, and over/under eating. I am worried for my friend because stress-related
Allison is a twenty three year old Caucasian grad student. She is currently in her second year of her graduate program and also holds a position as a retail worker. Allison has recently received a promotion where her responsibilities as well as her hours have increased. While this promotion is beneficial for financial reasons, Allison now has less time for her studies. Allison is having a difficult time balancing her increased work ours and her school work and; therefore, has been experiencing increased levels of stress and anxiety. Too add onto Allison's stress, her boss has offered her a second promotion which would mean another increase in hours. Allison has declined this position numerous times because school is her main priority, however,
The results of the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale surprised me a little because I assumed that my level of stress would be much higher than it actually is. I scored a 142 meaning that I have a low level of stress, and that I am not in immediate danger of becoming ill. I truly thought that the results would have turned out differently, and proved that I was under an immense amount of stress; however, I now realize why that is not so. I am not as stressed as I thought that I would be because I have an amazing social support system in my life, I am a very optimistic person, I lead a very active lifestyle, and I am always giving back. The most surprising lesson that I learned from the stress scale was that alleviating myself of some of my duties at church has actually led to an increased level of distress rather than a decrease. I believe that this is due to the fact that the social environment that I was used to has been almost depleted due to the demands of my personal goals. Taking on a second job, spending more time doing
Stage 1 – is when there is demand or pressure placed on the athlete in a certain situation such as the last penalty shoot-out.
Psychological stress is pressure placed on a person to adapt, cope, or adjust to a situation (Rathus, 2016, p.284). The result of prolonged stress can affect a person’s mood, pleasure experience, and have harmful effects on physical health (Rathus, 2016, p.284). Society in the twenty first century places high demands on people. Technology makes it very difficult to separate work life, school life, and home life. Today, society places a high value on a busy lifestyle for individuals. For example, many places of business are open twenty-four hours a day. In addition to societal pressures, attending a university adds to the stressors a person may experience. Going to school not only includes classroom time but it also includes homework,
