Strong Introductions

Begin your paper with an appropriate introduction, including a thesis statement to introduce the purpose of the paper.

Be sure to begin with a strong hook and include a thesis statement that lays out your main argument, supporting details, and a good conclusion.

Your introduction should move from general information to very specific information. You should imagine familiarizing the reader with: 1.) the title and author 2.) some information about the text 3.) your topic 4.) your thesis and three examples. Be sure to include:

Your introduction must include these required elements: the purpose of your paper, the importance of the topic, the definitions of your key terms, an organizational statement, and a clearly defined thesis statement.

After reading these three chapters, I found they were really helpful for writing research papers. Specifically, the biggest take away from these chapters was section 16.2 Step 1: Establish Common Ground. (p. 235-237) Establishing common ground usually is a key to persuade others to continue reading the paper. It is like a window of my paper because if I could not write a good beginning then probably no one would like to continue to read my paper. Therefore, I believe that the introduction of the papers play an really important role in the paper.

Thesis: Answers the prompt. Your thesis statement is stated in the introduction paragraph to tell your reader what your essay is about. It answers the prompt.
