CHAPTER I
RESEARCH PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION Notably, student information system or SIS incurs such application software designed for educational establishments to manage student data. Student information systems provide capabilities for entering student test and other assessment scores, building student schedules, tracking student attendance as well as managing many other student-related data needs within the institution university. Thus, many of these systems applied in the Philippines can be scaled to different levels of activity and can be configured by their home institutions to meet local needs. Moreover, before universities have created their own bespoke student record systems, but with growing complexity

It will be easier for them to access and store the information of the students through the system and have own privacy and security to there information. It is also possible to the school to attract students because it has well-organized system.
To the school. The system will be very useful to the school it can save more time in store and prepare information in the system also less effort.
To the future researchers. Those who take on a similar research, this study will persuade them to maintain and go on with more analysis on the same study.
DEFINITION OF TERMS The following provides a definition of important terminologies for more clarity in the understanding of the study.
Program - It is collections of instructions in manipulating data.
Security - Refers to techniques for ensuring that data stored in a computer cannot be changed or compromised.
System - Set of detailed methods, procedures, and routines established or formulated to carry out the specific activity, perform a duty, or solve a problem.
Student Information Systems (SIS) manage student records and information
Database- a collection of information that is organized so that it can easily be accessed manage and updated.
Local host-(meaning “this computer”) is the standard host name given to the address of the loop back network interface.
System- is a group of interacting, for an interrelated or interdependent elements complex whole.
System Analysis Design- is the study of set of
Currently a school uses a non-computerised database system to store the following information about its students: roll class, surname, first name, guardian 's name, address, student 's date of birth, gender, sport house, emergency-contact telephone number, mailing name, list of subjects offered, and subjects in which the student is enrolled. The system takes up a large amount of space, has many duplicated entries some of these with mistakes and it is time consuming to search. The school intends to introduce a relational-database management system to overcome these problems.
The proposed Student Information System could be developed using both methods, yet each with its own unique challenges. The main issue which is relevant relates specifically to the prioritization of development time in short cycles which may be difficult to reconcile with the needs of the Information System. However, this will allow for frequent changes in requirements and design needs which would not be possible with the
Then we have to know what is a ‘Database’. Database is known as organized, structured and centralized set of data collection which are stored in a computer system. That can be managed, updated and accessed.
To enable students to manage resources, work under deadlines, identify and carry out specific goal oriented tasks.
Thus a computerized Information System would wisely benefit both the administration and the whole organization since the system speeds up the processing of data, retrieval and storage of information as Razon & Tabili (2005) proposed a Computerized Student Information System (CSIS) which was vividly depicted in their study.
Which may contain their emergency contact details, Student data and personal information. The information should be stored very confidentially in the college database and servers to protect student’s privacy. This is also helpful to maintain track record of individual students. Which is easy to organise and maintain scheduling notifications from college.
“Data Science School” (DSS) is a private Registered Training Organisation (RTO) operated and owned by Mr John Smith and close family members. Mr John Smith wants a new system as he wants to expand his organisation in different regions and initially all information about students, staff, admissions, enrolments etc... , are all paper based files i.e., manually stored as the organisation expanded compliance requirements increased and accurate capturing of information became more critical and the new system helps in storing all the information in more organised way and also it reduces the human errors and also cost of the project.
A system can be simply defined as a group of interrelated or interacting elements forming a unified whole. Many examples of systems can be found in the physical and biological sciences, in modern technology, and in human society. Thus, we can talk of the physical system of the sun and its planets, the biological system of the human body, the technological system of an oil refinery, and the socioeconomic system of a business organization. A system is a group of interrelated components working together toward a common goal by accepting inputs and producing outputs in an organized transformation process. Such a system (sometimes called a dynamic system) has three basic interacting components or functions:
Ellucian is the world’s leading provider of software for higher education facilities. It focuses its help on the education community to be able to bring students, faculty, and staff closer together and help them to achieve their goals more efficiently and effectively with reduced amount of risks. One educational facility that has benefited from partnering with Ellucian is Ursinus College. Ursinus College wants to enhance the student experience. Around September 26, 2014, Gene Spencer, the Chief Officer at Ursinus College stated that they found a system that will be the main keystone for their information architecture, that will help provide intellegence to the success of their entire academic enterprise [1]. Colleague has easy to use interfaces and it can be accessed from any device. By pairing up with Ellucian, Ursinus’s students can receive real time access to financial and academic information.
All the information about student and his marks are kept in a database and they reside on the server.
In most Nigerian schools, officials and staff still go through the laborious exercise of manually registering students, maintaining records of students‟ performance, keeping inventory list of supplies, doing cost accounting, paying bills and printing reports. The huge man-hour spent on these exercises can be drastically reduced with IT technologies to enhance overall management procedure. Thomas (1987), said that “Computers bring great speed and accuracy to each of these tasks, along with the convenience of storing large quantities of information on „small disks or tapes‟ (P.5). For the purpose of this project, problems related to the management of information regarding student and their academic work, including teachers and subjects is the matter of concern. To alleviate these problems I have designed and developed a web-based student information system termed, Electronic Student Management System (E-SMS) to automate the management of information and essential administrative work regarding student registration, maintaining records of students‟ performances, teachers, subjects and class managers in an academic school year.
I understand the nature of plagiarism, and I am aware of the policies on this.
Visual Basic(VB) - It refers to a software used of any programmer in developing a system.
Advantage of this system is able to save a lot of time when compared to manual registration. Students are not required to come to the campus just to take the form and fill in their personal information. They just have to fill the form online and can save a lot of time. The process of the registration becomes easier. These systems
Once they heard that the school uses a computerized enrollment system, it catches the attention of the parents and they are willing to enroll their student in that school. Using a computer to manipulate the school operations and transactions gives two main advantages: (1) the speed accuracy and reliability of the transaction relatively increases; (2) the user (the person using the computer) can directly communicate within the computer. The second advantage means the user is allowed to use the system effectively, [Alter, 1991]. He / She can capture, transmit, store, retrieve, manipulate and display data or student information which is needed to complete a transaction with the enrollee or to perform tasks.
