Inadequate sleep make students not participate in class well. This can lowers test scores. For example, someone has football practice at 10:00 pm to 11:00pm. Once the practice is over, that person is tired and gets a meager amount of sleep. A credible person said "the combination of delayed bedtimes and early school start times results in inadequate sleep"(Maggie Fox). Another example is, people don’t get enough sleep because of homework, they get too much of it. They spend hours doing homework, this makes them tired while doing homework and tiredness makes them have bad grades. People who don’t get enough sleep are subtle in school and mostly lead to despair. They do poorly, that’s why we need later times. Students have other things than school work. They spend time doing physical activities and other things. Schools that start “at 7:30 by one hour would increase math and reading scores by 2 to 3 percentile points” (Finley Edward). It has come to my attention that kids are going to school tired therefore looking like zombies. A good reason for this is that they are waking up so early for school. These reasons listed are why students should start school a little later in the morning. If you have brain problems then it can be hard to concentrate and will cause more fidgeting. Drowsy driving can cause car accidents which can also cause injuries of humans, traffic jams in the morning, and problems for other drivers. Secondly, school starting at a later time is beneficial academically. Most teens don’t get enough sleep which causes them to feel sleep deprived and stressed for school. Teens usually get six to seven hours of sleep but Dr. Cora Breuner says, “ We truly believe that our teenagers are getting six to seven hours of sleep a night, and they need eight to 10 (Shute).” This causes teens exhausted for the school and not mentally or physically prepared for each class in school. However, teens who get more sleep do better academically, with better standardized scores and a better quality living style (Shute). For example through one studies, showing the delay by an hour in start time, increases standardized test scores by roughly 3 percentile points (Edwards). So academically it is beneficial for the kids in school.

Students should get justice and get school start times pushed back till later morning hours,and 64.6% of YHS students think that we should start school at 9:00 AM. instead of 7:50 AM. THe students of YHS and other schools in the country should be able to choose their own school start times because kids are stressed and not getting good grades, not focused because they are exhausted from doing homework and studying until midnight and past that, finally a lot of students do not show up to school on time or at all because they get little sleep.
