One last thing that I would like the admission committee to consider is that I am dedicated to helping everyone. I have spent time everyday during the week for about four years assisting children with disabilities. While this does not directly relate to the nursing field, many of the skills I have acquired from my experiences will greatly assist me in my nursing career. One of those skills is compassion, to fully understand how to help an individual with a disability you must imagine what life is like from their position. Having this skill will allow me to assist patients, and see that they are not just a disease, that they are a person and should be treated as one. These experiences with children with disabilities have taught me to to never
Going into the nursing program at Colorado Christian University means so much to me. I have been to a couple different colleges but at that time I wasn’t sure what I wanted to go for. Now, I know exactly what my goal is and what I want to achieve with school. I currently work as a Hospice CNA, I love my job. I will be the first out of my parents and mothers side of the family to graduate from a four year college. Also, being a nurse is something I’ve always dreamed about. Working as a hospice CNA has really made me value life and has opened my eyes to nursing. I love being there for my patients and their families. I truly feel like this is my purpose on earth to help others. I feel so rewarded to be able to take care of these people that cannot
The Nursing Practice has come a very long way from what is use to be. Nursing was an unwanted profession, difficult and challenging in many ways. It was thanks to the dedication, great effort and sacrifice of many determined nurses that paved the way for contemporary nursing. Dating back to around middle of the first century Christians use to care and tend the sick, serving as one of the first nurses that history can account. When the small pox epidemic occurred in around 165 to 185 AD, these Christians served as nurses. Now, we can imagine how hard it would have been to be a nurse in those days. The conditions were deplorable, with barely any hygiene. There were harsh conditions to work as nurse, and viruses like the measles outbreak in
Nursing students today are diverse with different learning styles. Nursing educators must shape students to become critical thinkers and there are a host of approaches for instructors to develop needed teaching skills (Kostovich et al., 2007). There are many models of education styles; one to fashion teaching after is from Kolb’s model in 1985 which suggests matching learning methods to teaching approaches. However, educators need to become proficient in identifying individual student learning styles. Nursing educators should also recognize their own teaching style and the effect it has on learner development and socialization (National League for Nursing, 2007). The National League for Nursing (NLN) has developed eight core
Holistic assessments in nursing provide a unique quality of care to the individual patient. Holism in the provision of care includes assessments obtaining data about the physiological, psychological, sociological, spiritual, developmental, cultural and environmental aspects. It is imperative that the nurse conducting these assessments adopts methods in the nursing process that reflects the standards outlined in Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse to ensure the health and wellbeing of the patient is maximized and maintained throughout the time health care is received. Nursing processes are directed at restoring overall harmony for the patient therefore an understanding of the
I am Karen Franklin BSN, I have been a nurse for 4 years. I am applying for Clinical II, I have grown as a person and as a nurse. I have had the priviledge to work in several different areas of nursing and truly enjoy being a nurse. My first position was on a telemetry unit where I got to learn of how to care for and manage critical care patients. In addition to learning how care for my patient, I learned how to initiate care plans, comply with core measures and do bedside teaching with patients and families. I received ACLS certification, critical care certificates and basic arrhythmia certificates.
Healthcare providers are at increased risk for compassion fatigue (CF), which has also been called secondary traumatic stress, second hand shock syndrome, secondary stress reaction, and vicarious trauma (ABA, 2011). Compassion fatigue begins to become an issue when caregivers give too much of themselves to others and neglect to provide for their own needs. Neglecting one’s personal needs can be harmful, leading to destructive behaviors and patterns, such as over indulgence and increased sick calls. Over time the provider has a decreased ability to show compassion. This paper will discuss and describe compassion fatigue, warning signs of compassion fatigue, and discuss recovery options for those suffering from compassion fatigue.
Karen Parra Aug. 9, 2015 Application Essay When I became a CNA I learned how powerful this profession can be, the way nurses influence and touch lives, I wanted to be a nurse because I love helping out others in their time of need. Throughout my experience I have seen how rewarding this profession can be when you care for a patient that appreciates everything you’ve done. Just how the counselors and teachers will take the time to check up on how you doing with your classes and if there is anything I would need help with. Also the faith that this college has with students and always trying to find ways to work around your schedule is great. I have worked as a CNA for almost 4 years and it has allowed me to gain experiences in the nursing field that would
Nursing professionals assist their patients with the use of clinical judgement and medical care to guarantee patients will either retain or improve their health so they can attain the best quality of life possible. I have made the decision to devote myself to this occupation because of the optimal role that nurses play in improving the health and lives of others. This profession is rewarding and appealing because it provides many responsibilities, challenges, financial security, and job security. Currently I am working toward receiving a Bachelors of Science in Nursing to become a Registered Nurse. One of the steps that I have to complete in order to receive this degree include applying for the full Nursing Program following the fall semester. To guarantee my acceptance, I have accumulated a 4.0 GPA throughout my freshman year and I have also worked very hard to excel within sciences courses such as Anatomy and Physiology. I will continue to work diligently in the future to guarantee acceptance into the program and also success while I am in the program. Not until I
My dream job is to be a traveling nurse and so participating in this trip would be one of my most memorable experiences for not only college, but my life as well. In my Junior year of high school I traveled to Nicaragua as an Orthopedic Surgical Mission trip. While there, the people I met and took care of, as well as the trip as a whole has made an impact on who I am today. I never imagined the trip to Nicaragua would have impacted my life the way it did, but I am grateful it did. An aspect of my personal life that sets me aside from other applicants is that I was diagnosed with type one diabetes at age fifteen. It was brought to my attention during the presentation that many juveniles in the country as well as adults have diabetes so I would
Social justice refers to fairness (Potter & Griffin-Perry, 2009). In the health care field it is the fair distribution of health care resources regardless of socioeconomic background. As nurses it is our responsibility to identify and minimize social barriers; making it easy for any member of society to gain access. To promote social justice, systems have to be implemented so that the resources are fairly distributed. For example, placing organ recipient on a list and selecting them through a lottery system. This ensures that the organ been donated is not going to someone who is more financially stable. Nursing students can take advantage of the resources available to them through their
In nursing, it is the duty of the nurse to provide their patients with the best care possible. Each care for the patient is associated with their recovery. The outcome that the patient will have during their discharge depends on how well their treatment was followed by and what interventions by the nurse were completed to benefit their recovery. There are patients that require bedrest during recovery and others that are capable of being mobile. Patients that have the ability of participating in mobility, can benefit in early mobilization upon their admission. The earlier a patient is able to be mobile rather than in their bed, will enhance their functioning status and benefit their recovery.
The reoccurring theme is that education in healthcare needs to be a continued effort. A constant endeavor needs to be put forth to research and integrate evidence based practice into healthcare. It is also important to treat a person as an individual regardless the culture, race, or gender.
Nursing compassion fatigue among pediatric nurses has become a concerning issue in health care delivery that must be addressed. When nurses experience this condition, they place their patients at an immediate risk. For example, medical errors, poor patient outcomes, and low patient satisfaction may occur (Kutney-Lee et al., 2009; Vahey, Aiken, Sloane, Clarke, & Vargas, 2004). Medical errors are unacceptable, especially during life or death scenarios with patients. One mistake can cause several other health issues or even death. Anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD) are linked to burnout (Czaja, Moss, & Mealer, 2012; Figley, 1995). This detrimentally affects nurses’ abilities to provide optimal care for their young
There are many external factors that have influenced my choice in the career I wish to go into, these are the area of nursing so adult or children, my qualification are they the best I can get and what else can I do but also the university I wish to go to, the money side so do I have the money to do the course do I have to get a loan or can I get a bursary and also my family as their opinion matters and do I wish to be close to them. This will discuss why I have picked nursing as a career and what I think is right for me. Firstly, the type of career I have always wanted was to be able to help and care for others in a busy environment, where something is always happening. I felt adult nursing was best as I could work in “hospitals and nursing homes, schools and colleges, HM Forces, and the prison services” (national careers service, 2012).
Holistic nursing is defined as “all nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal” (Dossey, 2012). Holistic nursing does not replace medicinal practice; rather, it incorporates the whole patient into the nursing care plan with the outcome being that of a healthier patient. Holistic Nurse Self-Care is the most important core value of the Holistic Nursing Care standards because of the importance of nurse self-care to the delivery of quality patient care. In order to be able to meet all the needs of the patient, a nurse needs to be prepared in mind, body and spirit.
