In Anthem by Ayn Rand the city has extreme rules and controls. They make everyone one think of himself as “we” not “I” or as a whole and not an individual. Equality 7-2521 is a man who is not like the other, he thinks a lot and about everything. “It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think and to put them down on upon paper no others are to see. It is base and evil.” (Rand 17) The council of vocations makes these rules and forces them upon everybody. The council chooses where each person will go when the time comes for them to be put into a home. Equality 7-2521 is put into them home of the street sweepers. They create these rules and daily routines for every person to make sure no one disobeys. They don’t want them talking about the unmentionable times, because they were different from their society. They don’t want people to think of themselves as anything more than a piece to their society. THe council of Scholars have few people because they are the ones who know everything. The Council of Vocations make the rules to put the people in their place and to keep everyone in line. They don’t let many people on the Council of Scholars because they do not want everyone to know the things they know. They don’t like to have new things made or invented.
