August Wilson who was legally named Frederick August Kittel Jr., was born in the Hill District of Pittsburg in 1945. His mother was African American, and his father was a German immigrant. Eventually Wilson would grow older and create what is referred to as the Pittsburg Cycle, a group of ten plays in which nine of them were set in the Hill district of Pittsburg. Each play covered a decade within the city and Fences was one of these plays.
Fences is a story of an African American family living in the Hill district. The story is set in 1957 and focuses on the protagonist Troy Maxson, an African American male who has not lived up to his own expectations. In Fences, Troy is married to his wife Rose who of which he has a son named Cory. Troy’s best friend is Jim Bono of whom Troy met when they were in jail together. Other characters in this story include Gabriel who is Mr. Maxson’s brother, Lyons, who is Troy’s son from a woman he met before he went to jail, and Alberta, who is Troy’s secret lover.
In 1957, racism was very common amongst the whites in America. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was still roughly eight years away from being passed. African Americans in the south had essentially been “freed” from the plantations and fields they worked after the civil war in 1865, yet most of the white population still didn’t view blacks as equals in society.
