Their personal struggles are part of the power of their story, as they stand not only as symbols of rebellion against Trujillo, but at the same time as loving, independent women with husbands and children. Alvarez shows how the resistance against women in politics can even be propagated by the women themselves, as both Mamá and Patria initially express sentiments that women are inferior to men, or else are somehow “purer” and so shouldn’t dirty themselves with politics. If the average person wanted to stand up to adversity, would they have the courage to do it? In the historical-fiction novel, In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, the four Mirabal sisters (Dedé, Minerva, María, and Patria) stand up to adversity and join a revolution against the tyrannical Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic. In their own time, all of the sisters gain the courage to join the revolution and attempt to remove the Trujillo regime from power. The Mirabal sisters commitment to their cause raises the questions: What is courage, and which sister best exemplifies the qualities of courage and why? Courage is an individual who defends their beliefs and does not fail because of fear. Minerva best exemplifies courage through her selfless composure, resilience, and defiance to the Trujillo regime, and her inspiration to others.
Unlike Audubon’s lengthy, complex syntax, Dillard employs a variety of sentence lengths and structures. She uses simple sentences and complex sentences to show the constant movement and rhythm of the birds. Dillard also uses a multitude loose sentences to emphasize her descriptions of the murmuration. For example, she writes, “They seemed to unravel as they flew, lengthening in curves, like a loosened skein,” which allows each additional phrase to deepen her description. Dillard's primary analogy is that of a spider. an exercise in parallelism connecting between the fourth and tenth paragraphs, literally—printed as a book, the fourth paragraph is superimposed on top of the tenth; this cannot be a coincidence. Dillard is the spider, and the husks of insects are her students, in correspondence with stereotypical impressions of schools. Just as the spider leaves the insects empty, it is a commonly held belief that schools suck children dry, empty. The spider is hanging over the mess of bugs like Dillard speaks in her classroom. But there are different types of insects, sowbugs, earwigs, and moths. Sowbugs, just like a sow's ear, are run of the mill students, uniform, unimpressive, and simple passing through. Covered in a coat of thick armour, it is difficult for Dillard to reach the sowbugs, engage them, interest them. Ambling along, they will pass through her class much the same as the went in, their looks never changing, yet all the while fragile enough to be on the brink of destruction: the epitome of a "C" student, an unengaged student who scarcely skates by. They are "hollow and empty of colour," scarcely being noticed. Then there are the mysterious shreds of an earwig, a corpse who somehow seems less present, but still shows promise, "shin[ing] darkly and gleam[ing]"; the whole creature which Dillard describes only superficially, lacking the vivid imagery and relying instead on scientific nomenclature. In the short story, The Moths Helena Maria Viramontes uses characterization and symbols to shine light on gender roles and maturity especially for women in the Hispanic culture. This short story was published in 1985 and during this time gender roles were changing. The number of women obtaining a higher education increased, it became more common for women to resist the stay at home and watch the children lifestyle. Hispanics in the US during this time felt like they were losing self-identity due to harsh laws passed by the United States. Knowing this information while I read this story was meaningful because it gave me a better understanding on what the narrator and her family were going through.
The Moths by Helena Maria Viramontes is a short story about a relationship between a teenage girl and her abuelita. Although, the title seems unfitting for a story about a loving relationship between family members the significance of the moths, in this story, has a much deeper meaning than one would think. Like many other aspects of the piece, the insects have a symbolic meaning in order to convey the author’s feelings during the time of her grandmother’s death. Throughout the story we see the use of multiple descriptions, settings, as well as dialogue in order to pass a message to the audience. The Moths is not only a story about death and brokenness, but a story about cures and peace. Upon further examination of this narrative, the story presents symbolic attributes about the main characters personalities, descriptions, and religious imagery that tell the story about a cure for brokenness, a rebirth of hope, and coming of age.
Annie Dillard’s piece “The Death of the Moth”, is about Dillard being reminded of the death of a moth she observes and how it relates to herself, this piece is a great depiction of the impact of life and death. Dillard describes her surroundings living in a rural area and within her bathroom is a spider which Dillard reminds of a moth that she killed in her past when she sees the web that the spider has spun and how it has caught many bugs including two moths. The original text has been edited to correct spelling and grammar. In truth, this essay is more of a collaboration between Betsy and I. Life is a constant struggle against the ever present chill of death. Fear, betrayal, and cowardice all stems from life’s distaste of death. Human beings naturally rebuke the unknown, so it is only logical that people fight the inevitability of death. However, most people are ignorant of the reality of one day dying, prompting writer Virginia Woolf to write the essay, “The Death of the Moth”, in order to convey the frailty of life whilst also showing the awesome might of death. He ruled for about 30 years, so the people were tortured for quite a long time. He became the dictator by eliminating everyone who had power above him. He even married his wives just to use them to get the the top and control everyone. It was just an unfair way to handle things and an unfair country overall.
