he Hunger Games(2013) directed by Gary Ross is a dystopian film, set in the fictional world of Panem which follows protagonist Katniss Everdeen as she fights to survive in a violent tournament run by the totalitarian government. The authority figures of the film- those with wealth, power and influence reside in the capitol where superficiality and materialism are welcomed as a way of life. Our presentation, Catching up with the Cottingworths focuses on these elements through a parodic portrayal of how materialism can cause one to become inconsiderate and self-absorbed. For example during our presentation in the scenes portraying the conflict between Cait and Clementine heavy, quite aggressive instrumental music is used to highlight the tension between these characters . In contrast the audio that is incorporated into the flim which positions the viewer to futher empathise with Katniss as it it often is representation of her thoughts and state of mind . The characters in our presentation were created incorporating aspects of the Kardashians coupled with the characters of Effie Trinket and the other Capitol citizens. The costumes used throughout our production were brightly coloured and unusual, inspired to be similar to the costumes of the Capitol citizens. In the Hunger Games, director Ross emphasizes the ostentatious dress of Effie Trinket and the Capitol through the manipulation camera angles and shot sizes. The use of wide angles highlights Trinket’s gaudy outfit in its entirety paired with extreme close ups of her make-up, hair and costume. Similarly, in our presentation we have also incorporated a variety of long shots in particular to showcase the bizarre costumes paired with impractical heels and accessories similar to the those used by Ross in the film to show Trinket as reflection of the superficial aesthetic of the
