It was the story of the birth of the author’s, Michael Gurian, daughters Gabrielle and Davita, with his wife, Gail. After reading this, I could see that, although both births resulted in a scheduled C-section, the first daughter’s, Gabrielle, birthing process was very hectic and more complex than Davita’s, the second daughter. According to the text, Mr. Guian’s wife, Gail, was in labor for almost two days on a stormy winter night in the year of 1990 with Gabrielle, and three years later came Davita (Gurian, 2007). The introduction continued to explain in detail the difference between both girls, as they grew from infants to teenagers, it also gave an insight to what information this book was about to …show more content…
It was wisely composed and had many stories, great tips, tools, and did you know sections that felt made this book worth reading. In spite of the fact that I did not have a desire to read it, it was not as uninteresting as I had expected, and I discovered it to be pleasant and educational, I would definitely read it again, and recommends it to everyone, especially to, parents, educators because they deal with children on a daily basis. I am glad I found this book and had the opportunity to read it and discuss my views on
In the article “Nurture the Nature”, the side of nurture seems to have a greater impact, said in the text, “During various phases of development, children need appropriate experiences that support their interest in exploration, experimentation, and self-direction.” (Sravanti, Sentence marked with [4]) This shows that kids are impressionable, you can
One of the main, and most controversial topics discussed in a child’s development is, nature vs. nurture. Nature pertains to genetic influences that a child has inherited from their parents, such as traits, abilities, and capacities. For instance, what color eyes the child may have, how athletic they may be, and even their brain development. Whereas nurture, refers to the environment the child is raised in and how this shapes their behaviors. Such factors can include, the family’s socio-economic status, schooling, parental discipline, as well as whether the child is provided with enough resources. When it comes to nature or nurture having a stronger influence then the other, the answer is both, nature and nurture, influence the outcome of the child. This idea that both nature and nurture, play a part in how the child will develop, is known as the nature-nurture continuum.
aggressively because the odds are stacked against them, with less ability to control their aggressive behavior when presented with a reward or no reward situation. Unbalanced levels of serotonin and norepinephrine, like dopamine, can affect one's ability to deal with stressors, which includes the likelihood of committing a crime. Similarly, certain genes are expressed differently because of environmental factors that predispose one to environmental risk when the two come into contact.
Nature versus Nurture is a common topic when discussing one’s personal development while growing up. Children are often affected by how their families treat them and teach them their values and judgements. This sometimes changes the children’s personalities and manners. Because of that the way they’re brought up can also often impact the choices they make in their future lives. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee illustrates how children are influenced by their families using the Finch and the Ewell families. Personally, my family has also greatly impacted my life and personality growing up.
During the life span development two contemporary concerns that are related are nature versus nurture and continuity and discontinuity. Changes in humans have been researched through centuries in trying to understand forces that drive humans inside and out. Nature and Nurture are known to be contributions and experimental factors (McGraw-Hill, 2004). Believers of nature are believed that children are born with certain behaviors that are innate. These patterns can be a result of genetic and or prenatal care (McGraw-Hill, 2004). For people who lean more towards the nuture side, the effects of certain experiences can depend on a person’s perception (McGraw-Hill, 2004). The continuity and
As many people have begun to pay attention to formation of personality, the debate over nature vs. nurture has raged for a long time and this issue is still controversial. However, as shown the
Family is like a roller coaster and is always changing and adapting as is needed. One day, a family may be permissive and allow their children to do as they please. However, the next day, the parents may feel it is necessary to use a dictatorial style where everything they say is essentially the law of the house. The last parenting style, authoritative, is when the rules are consistent and the parents are flexible. Depending on which of these styles a parent uses, the child will grow up in a different atmosphere that can influence their personality. This is the idea of nurture, whereas the idea of nature would be that the genetics of the parents, not their parenting style, is what decides the children’s characteristics. Arguably, authoritative parenting is the most effective and reliable, whereas permissive parenting can lead to a lack of stability within a family.
From Dr. Money’s perspective, raising Bruce as a girl would allow him to live a “normal” life, if he were to live his life without a penis, he would be seen as an outsider and rejected from society. He also suggested to put Bruce on estrogen, but also surgically give him a cosmetic vagina. Dr. Money explained to Ron and Janet that Bruce/Brenda, would psychologically mature as a woman, and be attracted to men, as well as be able to have sexual intecourse, without a problem. According to Bruce’s parents, there was no reason “that it shouldn’t work” (50). However, they could have thought it out thoroughly, what if Brenda didn’t feel comfortable in her own skin? Would she feel as though something is wrong with her? This is where the topic of
The nature vs Nurture debate allows us to see if behavioral tendencies, personality attributes and mental abilities are already a part of us before we are already born. Nature is influenced by genetic inheritance and biological factors. Nurture is the influence of external factors after conception, with experience and learning
What makes a woman a woman and a man a man? Are we who we are because we are raised differently from others? Many of our physical traits such as gender, skin colour and blood group are rather straightforward in that they are directly attributed to our genes which have been mapped out in recent years. However, certain human traits remains a biological mystery. These traits have been studied on the "outside" but whose "inside" origins remain unclear. Such "mysterious" traits can be anything like intelligence, athletic ability, skin tone and muscle mass. They are traits that some claim to be acquired later in life.
Violence take multiple forms, many of which are covered in the nightly news. Murder, rape, familial abuse, bullying, workplace hostility, armed robbery—all of these are societal problems with far-reaching repercussions. There have long debates and discussions regarding whether nature or nurture influences individual violent behavior. People are concerned about what makes an individual to engage in violent behavior such murder or burglary among other types of crimes. They are also concerned about what makes people stop such behavior. However, there is no precise conception whether nature, nurture or both influence violence. Some people assume that, violent behavior results from individual’s life experiences or upbringing also known as nurture. Others feel that violent behavior is more complex and results from individual’s genetic character or nature. In other words, it is not clear whether violent behavior is inborn or occurs at some point in persons’ lives, but even it’s hard, emphasizing one and ignoring other influences is always an unwise way to go.
Nature versus nurture is a continual discussion among psychologists. More recent studies on the advancements in attachment theory have created modern changes to what is now termed the regulation
This iconic topic questions whether one's development is predetermined by one's DNA or shaped by one's environment and experiences. My initial conclusion was that how we are nurtured is more influential than our nature as the nature component of our development usually determines only biological traits such as eye colour, body shape and size, hair colour, etc. Also, I concluded that the environment in which the child is raised in is crucial in developing the child’s identity because they pick up a distinct language, dress, ethics, and possibly religion.
Nature vs. nurture has been discussed by philosophers in the past and by scientists more recently. Philosophers such as Plato argued that all knowledge was inherited from your parents and when you were told something you didn’t learn it you were just reminded of it. Aristotle however argued that all humans were born with a blank slate and built on it with influence from there environment. In the 1700’s the empiricists and the internalists took over the argument. They fought through letters explaining there point of views and denouncing the others. This leads to Pavlov coming up with the idea of behaviorism in the early 1900‘s. Behaviorism became the new wave of Psychology and influenced a lean towards the nurture side. It was not
It has been a very heated debate as to whether nature or nurture has a greater effect on the development of children. I believe that a nurturing environment has a stronger influence on a child’s personality than the role of nature. This class has provided me with more support and in agreement with my claim and it has given me a new perspective as to which parenting class I will use when I have my own family.
