This article published in The Atlantic by journalist and author Alex Tizon chronicles the life of a Filipino woman named Eudocia Tomas Pulido, known as Lola, who spent 56 years as a slave with the author’s family. This woman spent 56 years with the Tizon family and helped nurture three generations of the author’s family. When the family moved to the United States in 1964, they brought Lola with them as their slave and treated her badly. All this time, nobody knew that Lola was the Tizon’s slave. After the author’s mother died of leukemia in 1999, Lola went on to live with the author and help bring up his family.
