The book Scat is an interesting book called Scat by Carl Hiassen. The book is about how a boy named Nick and a girl named Martha finds out who did the arson, and why did Mrs.Starch disappear. The message Carl Hiassen is sending is to never judge a book by its cover. The first example is that Mrs.Starch is mean, but deep down she is nice. This proves that you should never judge a book by it’s cover because a mean person such as Mrs.Starch could have a bright side by taking care of endangered animals. Mrs. Starch looks mean because she is old and strict. She is strict, so her students will be focused and smart. Mrs.Starch showed bright side when she was taking care of Squirt in the wilderness after the fire. Another great example is Jimmy Lee Bayliss because he looks a normal middle-class man, but the actually did the arson to drill illegal oil with his dumb master Drake McBride who is the president of the Red Diamond Energy Corporation. …show more content…
Jimmy Lee Bayliss looks like a regular person because he wears normal clothes, and acted like nothing was wrong. Jimmy Lee Bayliss made himself look innocent by getting rid of the fire he created and blamed it on Duane Scrod Jr. also known as Smoke, so people will judge him by his casual look. In addition to the great examples, Smoke is another person who is judged by his look. This also proves you should not judge a book by it’s cover because like Mrs.Starch, he looks really mean, but deep down, he is really nice and soft. Smoke looks mean because he is big, has a low voice, and has a camo book bag. Deep down he love outdoor activities, and he is soft because he helped save the baby panther names Squirt to track the mom
There are countless people who judge others by their image or the words whispered by friends. This has been true since people have begun interacting with one another. Indeed, people feel the need to categorize everything and everyone leading to stereotyping and bias based upon appearances. In today’s society, there are many incidents involving racial and gender inequality demonstrating that little has changed since the 1960s. In this novel, Scout Finch, a young girl, recounts her life as she observes social concerns including racism and prejudice. When her father Atticus, a criminal attorney, agrees to defend an innocent black man, Scout comes to realize that not everything is as perfect as it seems. Appropriately, Scout and her brother Jem learn not to judge others as a result of interactions with three characters that they encounter throughout their childhood. Boo Radley, known as the town’s ‘evil monster’, Mrs. Dubose, an elderly, ill-tempered woman who lives near the Finches and Tom Robinson, an African-American man being accused of raping a white woman that is being defended by their father, all teach the children that character is not a reflection of one’s outwards appearance. As such, through knowing these people and their circumstances, Scout and Jem’s sense of social justice and fairness matures. It is through their eyes that Harper Lee, in To Kill a Mockingbird, demonstrates the immorality of judging others without consideration of who they are and what
It could be said that appearances and an individual’s background can influence other people’s perception of the individual. In the article, The Saints and the Roughnecks, by William J. Chambliss, two groups of boys were observed by Chambliss: The Saints and the Roughnecks. The Saints were a group of boys that were seen as good, promising young men that came from upper middle class families, whereas the Roughnecks were boys that came from lower class families that were labeled as delinquents by the community (Chambliss, p. 186). Both groups of boys were involved in deviant activities, yet only the Roughnecks were punished for their actions. Since the Saints came from rich families, they had access to vehicles that allowed them to take their deviant acts outside the eyes of the community. The Roughnecks, on the other hand, did not have access to such transportation and would congregate in the centre of town, where the members of the community would pass them by
We know stereotypes exist, because we control how people view us. However, we often create false images of ourselves in order to avoid prejudice. In Harper Lee’s Novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus is a lawyer and father to Jem and Scout, who are ages six and nine in the beginning of the story and end at ages nine and twelve. The story is all based around this small family and their town Maycomb dealing with a rape case with a black male and a white female. Throughout this Novel many characters put up a front to hide who they truly are so that they’ll be judged on that rather than what they really are. We see this on a daily basis with people whom put on a smile everyday, but we also see this with Mrs. Dubose, Tom Robinson, and Mr. Dolphus Raymond when he hides behind his “alcohol” so that it gives the public a reason for his lifestyle.
Scythe is a book set in a time period where humanity has conquered death. The only way to die is to be randomly chosen by certain people called gleaners. Two teenagers named Citra and Rowan have been chosen to become gleaner apprentices under scythe Faraday. Later, the rules gat changed and it is decreed that the loser will be gleaned by the winner. Who will win, and who will be gleaned.
Another reason this is an important idea in the film is that it teaches us that judging others wrongly can affect us if we judge someone as being a kind and pure person when that isn’t particularly true. For example, the audience was made to believe that Jim, Kim’s ex-boyfriend was a nice person, Jim is portrayed to the audience as the classic blonde-haired, blue-eyed American boy and is seen to the whole neighborhood including peg as an angelic person because of his looks and how his exterior seems. We see how it is important when we witness how quickly Jim’s personality changes and we instantly see what he is really like, we see an almost devilish darkness to him when Kim tells him to leave. After this scene we see Jim chasing after Edward trying to kill him, this demonstrates exactly why judging people based on their looks does not benefit either party as it could reflect negatively on the person being judged or the person who is judging someone. This lesson teaches that although someone may seem like one thing on the outside they may be completely different on the inside, judging this way is as if believing that just because an apple may look on the outside as perfect and ripe, it can be very
Looks can be a very determining factor, and sometimes people's appearances can affect what she or he can or can not do in society and what they do to fit into it. The play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, is a good example of how this idea is put into play. The main character, Cyrano de Bergerac, is portrayed as a hideous person, because of the size of his nose. As someone who does not fit with in society, yet he changes his morals, attitude, and personality to make up for his grotesque appearance. As the play progresses from act to act we the readers realize that Cyrano is this magnificent character. We begin to understand how his ugliness has shaped his life, how the deformity on his face has forced him to learn new skills and to
Have you ever read the book Freak the Mighty well if you haven’t you should! One of the themes of the story is don’t judge a book by its cover. This theme means that you should not base people on their appearance base them on their personality. My personal experience with this is when I went to an Angles game and saw a really old guy in the dugout which was the hitting coach for them. So do not judge people on their looks, but base them by their personality.
In the book “Freak The Mighty” we learn about the themes. One of the biggest themes in this story is don’t judge somebody based off of their appearance. My personal experience with this is when i heard of this artist Halsey, i immediately thought ok well she must suck because of her past songs did not really go well with what her new songs were. I listened to a few of her songs and started to really like her new music. It relates to the theme of the book “Freak The Mighty” by Rodman Philbrick because this sort of taught me to just try to learn new things and to not judge because i might just be wrong.
This woman who has a strong emotional connection with her books did not allow society to brainwash her and turn her into one of their robots. Instead, she is like Clarisse and can see the reality of the world around her and what is really going on with their community. Furthermore, the woman is aware that Montag will not realize the importance of the books at that moment, although, the woman made a statement that stood out to Montag. The woman was willing to stay with her books and herself be burnt along with the books. This shows a sign of importance and a bold statement to show how significant the books are to her and Montag quickly picks up on
Most people have been taught since a very young age to never judge a book by its cover. However, in the movie The Breakfast Club, judging seems to be occurring a lot. The Breakfast Club is about a group of teenagers who have received detention on a Saturday afternoon. While in detention, the students learn a lot about each other that they otherwise didn’t know before. After watching this movie an individual learns that they cannot judge a book by its cover- in other words, no one can judge another character based solely on an appearance.
There is a phrase,” Don’t judge a book by its cover”, that has been taught over and over. It conveys that individuals should not pass judgment on others based on their looks but rather to look past their external appearance. The sad truth is that everyone does judge books by their covers; it is the first thing a person does. To put it another way, appearances influence how one is perceived and there are countless ways to prove this. One example would be in the book Lord of The Flies by William Golding. The author uses Piggy’s character and symbolism to demonstrate how his appearance impacts how his intelligence is perceived.
Secondly, the girl is a perceptive individual, a quality surely we all whet an appetite for. In a striking simile, she is aware that a ‘book is like a loaded gun’ and when you ‘burn it’ you take the ‘shot from the weapon’.
People judge one another by their physical attributes rather than the character of their personality. We build judgements and assumptions of people just by the way they look. That's just the sad reality of the world we live in. I have chosen to explore the theme “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, and this theme can be seen in the novels The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B by Teresa Toten, Are You Seeing Me? By Darren Groth, Falling Into Place by Amy Zhang and Wonder by R.j Palacio.
Mrs. Starch feels that Duane needs help because, of his actions, grades, and how he is during school. In the story, Three Little Pigs, the third pig helps his brothers. That is why Mrs. Starch and the third pig are related. In the book Scat, Mrs. Starch doesn't waste any time during class. For example, on page 1, “When the bell rang, she unfolded stiffly, like a crane, and rose to her full height of nearly six feet. In one hand she twirled a sharpened Ticonderoga No. 2 pencil, a sure sign of trouble to come.”(pg.1) In this quote, the author makes Mrs. Starch look like a strict teacher as it says at the end of the quote ‘trouble to come.’ As in the Three Little Pigs, the third pig doesn't waste his time singing the song like his brothers. I think that the characters in both stories are very strict and don't waste time having fun. That is why working hard makes the work pay off. Last, but not least, Mrs. Starch helps her students by working hard. On page 265, Mrs. Starch tells Nick and Marta, “Look, my job is to fill young minds with knowledge, and certain fields of knowledge can be boring at times. Really boring. Which means I have to be tough in order to keep my students
To most people Jim wouldn’t stand out. He was a terribly average looking man in his mid-thirties, that would blend seamlessly into almost any crowd. Jim was a extremely clean cut man with no interesting facial hair. He was about five feet and eleven inches tall, with an average build. Jim had short reddish-brown hair that was always neatly combed and well maintained. His facial feature were also uninteresting. He had naturally thin eyebrows that appeared to be maintained. His were a soft brown that were surrounded by dark but short eyelashes. Jim, like most people, change his outfits based on what he was doing that day, but even then he didn’t stand out much. For casual wear Jim would wear solid colored tee-shirts and jeans on most days. Occasionally, on days when there were sporting events, his solid colored shirts would be replaced with one with sports team logos. When going to work or a special event Jim would wear khakis or black slacks and a dressing long sleeve. His choice of outfits on workdays
