The Meaning of Liberal Education In the article, “The Meaning of Liberal Education”, the author Robert A. Scott explores what the purpose of a liberal arts education is and how it is connected to making students more aware of their world. Scott conveyed that a liberal education provides a broad exposure to be shared by all students no matter their major. He feels that a liberal education will expose the student to the world in which we live. According to Scott, by experiencing a liberal education, the student is able to find questions behind the answers. He stated that history, imagination, and compassion are three essential subjects which need to be discovered during the process of obtaining an education. He feels that too many adults lack the skills to understand the dynamics of culture and how people interact. After discussing the matter with several professionals, Scott was surprised to find that many employers felt that individuals lacked subject-matter knowledge. Internships were considered to be ideal for preparing adults for their future. By receiving internships, the adults would be well-rounded. It is thought that by receiving a liberal education, a citizen can acquire a network of fellow students and alumni that they can use throughout their careers and also their social life.
