Supplemental Essay: Boston University

Coming from an HBCU I can personally attest to the positive aspects of a diverse campus. Working with and learning from others, students and faculty included, who think differently than yourself can help prepare the students for both a diverse workplace and world. Interacting with others with varying perspectives can help increase creative thinking and cultivate a self-awareness once the students enter the workforce after graduation. Attending a graduate school with a wide variety of students and faculty from different universities, backgrounds, and cultures can foster a sense of belonging and safety for all that attend. It is easy to feel overwhelmed when encountering a new environment, however, when one knows there is a warm and accepting place to go to can put many people at ease. September 12th, 2015. We had arrived in Boston the day before after a ten hour drive which wasn’t as bad as you’d think it would be. Sure, it definitely felt like a ten hour drive, but it was an entirely new experience for me. I crossed the US border for the first time, received by first American dollar bill, and to pass the time, I kept track of every different license plate I laid my eyes on; 16 different states and provinces to be exact. The ideas that a mother and son duo from a tiny community in Quebec came across another person with a California plate on their car intrigued me, and this really made time fly. Before we knew it, we were entering the city of Boston.

There was no time in Boston that was most emphasized, than the 1850’s to 1900’s. In the city of Boston there were a lot of changes that had occurred between the second half of the 19th century, not only with the city but also with the people living in Boston. Boston has always been changing and in transition.

The second grievance that I found important is “He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance” because he attacked the people in ways that over powered them.

Community Colleges were developed with the purpose of providing an affordable and accessible education. By providing students with both academic and learning skills, community colleges continue to remain an essential part of today’s society. Throughout the years, community colleges have continued to develop and transform to provide resources to meet the needs of their students. As new community colleges began to develop, it is critical that they are aware of the political issues that community colleges face. For this assignment, I will discuss the University of District of Columbia Community College and its governance. In addition, I will provide information on federal and local government involvement, leadership structure, political culture, student demographics, and community groups. Lastly, I will provide recommendations on how to address the issue of governance.

The Boston Massacre was crucial to the development in American history. John Adams once said, “What do we mean by the Revolution? It was only an effect and consequence of it. The Revolution was in the minds of the people…” The Boston Massacre was caused by the rising tensions between a nation and a colony. The entire nation was judged by reckless acts of a few soldiers. In the end, two trials that were reasonably fair, were conducted to the concept of right of self-defence was sustained.

It is a historically black public research University located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. When applying to Winston Salem State University one should consider the admissions criteria, tuition, and academic majors. Also, it is important to have academic support, understand the college’s demographic, and familiarize oneself with campus life.

The Boston Common, one of the oldest public spaces in the nation, has a skating rink in winter. It was created in 1634 and consists of 50 acres (20.2 hectares). It's part of the Emerald Necklace of parks in Boston. It was once owned by William Blaxton, the first European settler in Boston. The Commons were also used as a British Camp during the Revolutionary War. The Boston Common and Public Gardens, which is next to the commons, are both listed on the National Landmark Registry. The history of Boston plays a major role in what it is today. During the year 1630, colonists from England founded the town of Boston which quickly became the political, commercial, financial, religious and educational center of the North East region. In the year 1765 the American Revolution began, this is wear the famous “Boston Tea Party” and “Battle of Bunker Hill” took place. In the 1800s Boston reemerged and accompanied by New York was the financial center of the U.S. Now being in the 21st century Boston is focused on education, medicine, and technology. There are 35 colleges and universities alone in Boston, offering entertainment for the city, students, and tourists.

The Boston Massacre was and is still a debatable Massacre. The event occurred on March 5, 1776. It involved the rope workers of the colonial Boston and two British regiments, the twenty-ninth and the fourteenth regiments. Eleven people were shot in the incident; five people were killed and the other six were merely wounded. The soldiers and the captain, Thomas Preston, were all put on trial. All were acquitted of charges of murder, however the two soldiers who fired first, Private Mathew Killroy, and Private William Montgomery, the two soldiers were guilty of manslaughter. The causes were numerous for this event. There had been a nation wide long-term dislike towards the British, and a growing hatred towards them by the people of Boston.

From growing up in Fayetteville and Sneads Ferry, North Carolina I have not experienced much diversity. The person from whom I had to learn about different cultures and people was my mother. She is an attorney who has worked in public service and experiences peoples from different cultures, races, and creeds daily. My mother taught me not to judge people based on outside appearances but rather than on inside values. From my mother, I learned how to appreciate the fact that every person has their own talents and specialties. Each person has their own preference and opinion and that should be respected as long as it does not cause harm to another. By learning these values from my mom, I believe that I would be a great candidate for Hollins University.

Boston, Massachusetts is the birthplace of the American Revolution due to the multiple historic events that took place within this city. Following this transformation, Boston became known for the great invention of the railroads and other contributions that have made America what it is today. Many residents of the city saw the multiple changes as steps to greatness and success for their families. Ultimately, the city of Boston and the people living there changed between 1850 and 1900 by the influence of abolitionism, the railroads, the Irish, and the filling of the Back Bay.
