Same sex or gay marriage is a topic that is always in the news these days. Well, a recent Supreme Court case's decision was to legalize this type of marriage here in the US. This essay will give a brief history of same sex marriages, summarize the legal reasoning of both the majority and dissent in the Supreme Court Decision and even evaluate how the media interpreted the decision.

The United States is currently embroiled in a battle over issues regarding civil rights of its citizens and what rights are constituted by that term. In the past, civil rights issues have been fought over women's rights and those of African Americans among others all in the name of seeking equality. Perhaps the most vocal group discussing civil rights in the United States at present are gay marriage activists who are fighting for same-sex couples to be able to marry. These individuals feel that marriage is a civil right and that there is no legal reason why people of the same gender cannot be legally married in the United States, a perspective which is shared by many people who are themselves not homosexual. Gay marriage is also referred to as same sex marriage. Same sex relationships occur when men and women are attracted to someone of the same gender as themselves. According to many opponents, gay marriages can be described as more of the abandonment of gender distinctions; because one cannot have same sex marriage while still believing that gender is relevant. Gays should not care what anyone has to think because it is not their body or their choice. It's the person that's gays choice. According to Pewforum.org (n.d)in 2001 americans opposed same sex marriage 57% to 35%, but by 2016 55% of americans supported same sex marriage comared to the 37% that opposed it. Gay people need more rights because gays should have access to the same rights as straights do, legalizing gay marriage will not harm the institution of marriage, and same sex marriage is a right preserved by the constitution.

Love is a human right that every individual should be able to experiment in their own way. Same-sex couples should have the right to get married because they have civil rights like all other citizens. The world should not disregard them from society, but unfortunately that is the way it is. All states should legalize gay marriage to show that the country is prepared to accept all kinds of people without discrimination.

I truly believe that gay marriage is a right and you should be able to love whoever you want. Nobody should be able to stop you from getting married and living life the way it was meant to be lived. I am on this side for many reasons. First, I feel very strongly about anti-discrimination and think that not allowing someone to marry the person they love is just horrible. Also, not allowing people to marry could cause an unpeaceful environment and I think that we should all be at peace with the people around us. Third, for most homosexual people they are born that way and there is no way they can love anybody else unless it is there same sex, so we are denying the right for people to be themselves and live a happy life the way they were born. A happy lesbian couple just came out of the courtroom, fresh from getting married, walking out the doors holding hands. Then comes a lady. When the lady sees them she rolls her eyes and looks at them in disgust. “Are you serious, that’s ungraceful!” angrily yelled the lady. The couple looked at her in shock and a man across from them came out and said, “Excuse me lady their relationship is their business and you have no rights to tell them what they can and cannot do with their love life.” This is only an example but the actual situation occurs, in and out of America. 50% of regular marriages fail and result in a divorce. What is the definition of marriage? The dictionary states it as being the legal union between a man and a woman as husband and wife. However, times are changing as the gay life style becomes more accepted by society it is time to allow all couples regardless of sex to enjoy equal protections, rights and benefits under the law. Perhaps, it makes the most sense to consider arguments against same sex marriage to realize why it should be legalized; these arguments touch upon a broad array of issues including: parenting, religion and morality, procreation, rights and benefits, and values and institute of marriage.

“I think the best day will be when we no longer talk about being gay or straight… It’s not a gay wedding, it’s just a wedding… it’s not a gay marriage it’s just a marriage.”(Pink). Gay marriage is a right that should be open to anyone in any state. The constitution does not state that same-sex marriage is unethical. Many people see gay marriage as something that is unlawful when in reality gay marriage just the same as opposite-sex marriage. Same-sex couples should be able to be married because they deserve equal rights, and they are also great parents and legalizing gay marriage would help reduce gay teen suicide.
