what sustainability is? Sustainability could be defined as an ability or capacity of something to be maintained or to sustain itself. It’s about taking what we need to live now, without jeopardizing the potential for people in the future to meet their needs. If an activity is said to be sustainable, it should be able to continue forever. what sets it apart from simply “environmentalism” or “environmental protection” Sustainability, in contrast to the environmentalism, represents the idea that human society should operate by utilizing industrial and biological processes that can be sustained indefinitely; this implies that those processes are cyclically rather than linearly oriented. As a basic concept, sustainability focuses on creating a better world and not compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs by embracing three core aspects: environment, economy and social equity. Sustainability encompasses environmentalism to a certain degree as one of the critical factors to ensure the sustainability of natural resources through environmental conservation and preservation. Natural Habitats believes that sustainability, as a vision is possible– embedding it as the core driver to ensure a responsible production. It is a long-term commitment that focuses on resource conservation, social development and environmental stewardship through: All in all, sustainability focuses on protecting the environment, increasing the livelihoods of local communities and
Sustainability has become a relevant word in the vocabulary of many organizations, governments and individuals. More than just a word, sustainability relates to the ability of institutions to continue executing their functions without forgetting the effects on the environment and taking into consideration the fair treatment of their employees and the human rights of society. Although sustainability is a widely used term by many individuals, the understanding of this term is not as clear as its popularity. When discussing the ideas of sustainability, most people automatically associate the term with the human impact on the environment. Others relate sustainability to the ability to cut costs and inefficiencies within the organization. A few individuals believe that sustainability is a matter of human rights. So what exactly is sustainability?
Sustainability relates to the ongoing capacity of Earth to maintain all life, which means developing ways to ensure that all resources on Earth are used and managed responsibly so they can be maintained for future generations.
The concept of sustainability is about the capacity of the environment to continue to support our lives and the lives of other living creatures into the future. There are a number of programs to restore the river to maintain communities, fisheries and navigation, to ensure long-term sustainability.
Sustainability is a concern, which has only been arising from the impact we humans have done in the past couple of decades. The word sustainability means how long you can continue doing what you are doing without coming to an end (Sustainability 2015).
So what is sustainability? It is the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance.
Sustainability to me is a way in which something is conserved in order for others to have an experience with it as well. The definition for sustainability in a dictionary is the ability to continue a defined behavior indefinitely. I was raised respecting the environment around me and how to treat it correctly. I recently visited Memorial Park in Loma Mar, California. I love nature and being in it was great, but, there was something odd about my visit. As I approached a tree I have passed hundreds of times I saw and orange rope around it meaning to stay away from that tree. The tree seemed burned a bit and was surrounded by plastic bottles. The air was fresh but the only thing my nose picked up was of the burning coal on the grills. I felt cool air come past me and once again
The term sustainability conveys to me the idea of something permanent or long term. Most people probably think of sustainability in an environmental context, related to issues such as, global warming, pollution and overpopulation. While the aspect of the environment is of crucial importance I think however, that sustainability needs to be looked at in a broader sense and include factors such as, social, political and economic aspects. According to Laasch and Conway (2015), sustainability is the level to which any state has the ability to sustain the three forms of capital which are social, economic and environmental depending on the conversation’s context, Laasch et al., (2015). Edward Barbier (as cited in Laasch et al., 2015) strongly emphasised the importance of social,
When I was five years old I began school. In Kindergarden we learned basic things like letters, numbers, and how not to be fully engulfed in flames. For some reason, 2004 was the height of anti-fire education in Missouri and before I knew how to tie my shoes I knew that if I ever was ablaze, to cover my face, fall to my knees, and roll back and fourth. This is what my institution placed serious value upon and because I was a student of that institution I also placed serious value upon it. The same idea must be applied to a university's teaching of environmental sustainability. This is discussed in David Orr's "What is Education For?" Through choosing a curriculum a university chooses what it places value onto, by making the environment a priority it showcases to the future generations that environmental wellness is an important responsibility for them to take ownership.
Sustainable development means that the present generations should be able to make use of resources to live better lives in such a manner that it does not compromise the ability of future generations. For sustainable development to occur, there needs to be sustainable economic, ecological and community development. Society needs to be educated about ways in which they can use resources, especially natural, in such a manner that it does not cause harm to the environment and put future generations lives at risk.
Sustainability is a word that can be defined in many different ways, according to the world view of an individual. I personally define sustainability as a term that allows an individual or a population to use natural resources without degrading their ability to regenerate to provide for the future generation. The term itself is too problematic because it does justify the limit of consumption.
Sustainability implies that the organization is managing in economic, ecological and socially competent ways. All organizations range on a continuum of their sustainability level with some being more sustainable than others. Generally, as Dunphy, Griffiths and Benn (Module One, Topic 1.5) point out, the more sustainable an organization is, the more they help the surrounding environment, be this local (the particular country) or macro (the world itself). The environment also reflects the sustainability ethos and situation of the organization itself.
Sustainability is a topic that has become very important in recent years. Sustainability is defined as, “the ability to continue a defined behavior indefinitely.” ("Finding and Resolving the Root Causes of the Sustainability Problem", 2014)
Sustainability is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations” (Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development: Our Common Future 1987). The concept of sustainability comprises of four pillars: environmental; economic; political and social; as can be seen in the image below. Environmental sustainability is the use and management of the environment in a way that it does not deplete our finite resources. Economic sustainability is a long term sustainable economy that supports its community and political sustainability is the collaboration of different bodies of government to achieve a sustainable future. Now social sustainability is hard to define as it encapsulates many different factors; however to be very broad it is to achieve social justice. The real objective for sustainability is that all four pillars work together equally in a precautionary principle;
Every living being are directly or indirectly depend on natural environment. Sustainability helps to balance financial, social, and environmental factors to facilitate responsible business decision making over the immediate and long term. . Sustainability refers to meeting the needs of present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Oxford University press 1987, p.43). Sustainability is also being protective and aware of use of natural resources and development that meets the need of present and everything that is need for our survival and well being depends, directly or indirectly on our natural environment. According to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Sustainability is
