The first composition was Symphony No.44 in E minor Trauer. It was composed by Franz Joseph Haydn. The piece is from the Classical era and it is a symphony. Symphony is a large orchestral piece in several movements. James B. Mallard III was the conductor for the performance. The piece has four movements: Allegro con brio, Menuetto & Trio: Allegretto, Adagio, Finale: Presto. All of them were performed. The first movement was fast. It started softly then it became louder. Regularly, the minuet (with trio) of a symphony is place at third movement. The second movement of this piece is a minuet with trio. It was played fast, but it was not as fast as the first movement. Those movements was sad. The third movement was slow and soft. Its notes was higher and the mood is better. I felt that it changed from minor mode to major mode in this movement. The closing movement was very fast and had a high end.

This was the shortest piece in this concert. Jae-Hyeong Park was the conductor of this piece. It alternated between the strong, fast with high notes and the soft, slow sections at the beginning. The melody of this piece was beautiful. I felt it bright and fast. There was alternating with soft sections. Ludwig van Beethoven-Symphony No. 9 performed by the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra on May 9, 2016, was an amazing concert to view with the many pitches and ranges of the instruments and vocalists. I enjoyed the concert more than I thought would. As I am writing this report, I am listening to it once again. This concert report reveals what I saw and heard during the concert with any significant observations.
The music played throughout all of the concerts adhered to be diverse. The instruments, the individuals performing, and the conductor all proved to be outstanding. The concerts proved to be interesting as I witnessed them, first hand.
When the concert first began, the three instrumentalists walked with energy despite their age. The first song, “Sonata I in G-Major Op. 2, Nr. 1” by Michel Blavet, was a Baroque Sonata. There were five movements and was played by the harpsichord, flute, and cello. All movements of the song were polyphonic because of the three instruments that had different parts and equal importance. In the first movement, I noticed that the flute tended to rise in pitch. In the second movement, I noticed that the melodies often repeated. Throughout the rest of the song the tempo changed from fast to slow and the flute would usually take the lead. In Emily St. John Mandel’s novel, Station Eleven, a terrifyingly powerful virus called the “Georgia Flu” sweeps across the world taking out almost every victim it touches. A team of musicians, actors, and backstage members make their way across a pandemic stricken land while hunting, performing, and surviving. They call themselves the “Traveling Symphony”. They’ve been traveling since nearly the beginning of the pandemic, finding and losing members as they go. Throughout the novel, there are several plot lines which run in different directions throughout different time periods, but one consistent theme that ties each twisting plot together throughout the entire novel is that “survival is insufficient”, a quote adopted from Star Trek.
The second piece that is discussed is Toccata in F major, by Johann Sebastian Bach. It is a solo piece that was performed in a unison and dissonant harmony. Surreal coordination and impressive pedal solo was extremely impressive and gave this particular piece a broad spectrum of dynamic change and tempo. Ascending and descending theme constantly repeated throughout this performance, alternating in crescendo and decrescendo, which brought life and movement to a classical piece.
Like the first movement of his Symphony No. 5 in C minor, op. 67, the first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 in F major is composed in the sonata form, and this represents the most striking similarity between the two symphonies. A sonata consist of three sections: the exposition (wherein the themes are presented), the development (wherein the themes receive new treatment and the drama is heightened) and the recapitulation (in which resolution occurs because the themes return to the home key). I attended Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony on October 14, at the Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Miguel Harth-Bedoya and Southwestern Seminary Oratorio Chorus, directed by C. David Keith, performed it. Ludwig Van Beethoven composed the work. He composed it between 1811-1824. Beethoven composed the work in D minor, Op. 125 (“Choral”). His Ninth Symphony was his last symphony to compose. It was preceded by eight other symphonies. I was attracted to this work because it was the first symphony to include a choral. I found it astonishing that Beethoven was completely deaf when he finished this work.
Since the Baroque era, the concerto has played a vital role in the music world. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, a concerto is “a composition for one or more soloists and orchestra with three contrasting movements.” There are two main types: the concerto grosso and the classical concerto; both will be discussed later. While the term concerto is relatively easy to understand in context, when put into use the term becomes more complicated to define.
