The terrorist attacks on Paris furthered the rejection of Syrian refugees by enhancing the Islamophobia against Syrians, feeding to the Anti Syrian Sentiment. The international community used the fear produced from the Paris attacks to develop more restrictive policies such as closing borders, refugee detainment, and Syrian refugees now seek shelter with the negative stigma of being associated to terrorism.
On the night of November 13th, six specific Parisian local hotspots, chosen by ISIS extremists, were bombarded with explosives and gunfire. The main players involved were ISIS extremists against French people. The motive behind this massacre was to attack sites that were against the moral values of ISIS. The Islamic State refers to Paris

As the United States oldest ally, we need to stand in solidarity with France during a period of immense struggle. President Obama furthered his address by saying that "we stand prepared and ready to provide whatever assistance the people of France need to respond." (CNN) Relief for refugees came from an image of a drowned Syrian boy on a Turkish beach. With the recent attacks, several governors now oppose their initial stance for refugee admittance in their states. More over, House GOP representatives are against Obama's proposed plan to admit 10,000 refugees by 2016. (CNN) In early 2014 Texas senator, Ted Cruz, initially expressed concern regarding improvement in refugee conditions. The senator spoke about the dilemma concerning refugees seeking asylum in the United States. Cruz said that the U.S. has “ welcomed refugees, the tired huddled masses for centuries. That’s been the history of the United States. We should continue to do so.” (Politico) In present day, bloodshed continues to be uncontrolled in Syria with terror reaching new heights at the thought of ISIL combatants sneaking into the U.S. Cruz takes back his acceptance and is pushing legislation that prevents Syrian refugees from entering the country. Cruz challenged Obama’s refugee relief …show more content…
Effective global governance is “a process of cooperative leadership that brings together national governments, multilateral public agencies, and civil society to achieve commonly accepted goals.”(International Monetary Fund) International countries, mainly regarding EU, need to be proactive in dealing with refugee matters. There is a lack of aid for the countries attracting the most refugees as a result of the proximity to conflict zones is not effect governance. There should be strategies to share the burden among countries accepting refugees; and a renewed focus on addressing the underlying issues that motivated refugees to flee their home countries. Refugees face on a societal level is the ability to support themselves.” Davis described the local- and family-level challenges faced by those considering fleeing from conflict. She also brought attention to the disproportionate impact that the refugee crisis has on the already impoverished communities of the host
Terrorist, sleeper cells and undeserving; these are all adjectives that Americans have used to describe Syrian refugees. This type of bigotry is an issue that must be addressed. In light of the recent attack on Paris, there has been a dramatic shift to block President Obama’s plan to bring 10,000 additional refugees into the United States. Imagine that, a nation of immigrants blocking other immigrants from entering. In order to gain this kind of overwhelming support for such a bill, propagandists have used countless personal attacks on an entire race and claim that it is in the name of national security. Rather than lock down the borders, the United States should take California’s model for vetting refugees and make it the federal
Four years ago, a civil war erupted in Syria after President Assad’s security forces fired into a group of peaceful protester, killing several of them (Syria), and starting a conflict that has rocked the stability of the world today. Now, as we go into the beginning of 2016, the world faces a refugee crisis unlike any other, and pressure is being put on many of the the world powers to give Syrian refugees a safe haven inside their countries. However, with taking in these refugees comes risk. America has always been a beacon for immigrants of all races and ethnicities for ages, but with the rise of a new terrorist group, with an obvious vendetta against America, the United States is having a difficult time determining whether or not it is safe to let these refugees into the country. Americans are faced with a decision. We can close ranks and turn helpless people away out of fear, leaving them to die or suffer some other unknown horrible fate, or we can put our fear aside and embrace these people with open yet cautious arms.
With the recent events around the world involving a terror group named ISIS, many have been affected. In Paris, many were killed during a concert which struck terror around the world. A total of 129 people perished and hundreds were wounded. Millions of Syrian refugees have been trying to escape and come to the United States for their own personal safety. Over the past 4 years, over 2000 refugees have been allowed into the country. In an attempt to increase the safety of the refugees, the U.S. has pledged to allow 10,000 more Syrians over the next year. It has become a controversial topic because citizens of the United States believe letting in the refugees is a mistake. Some incredulous citizens believe letting in refugees will cause more
I am writing this letter to you because I believe that the Syrian Refugee Crisis needs to be added to the grade ten Canadian History Since World War One course.
The topic of discrimination is one that has been a prominent issue all throughout history. Humans are rather known for taking all of the fear, mistrust, and hatred that they experience and act on it in a way that generalizes and segregates them from one another. Furthermore, they allow these feelings to cloud their judgement of right and wrong. One example of this is the Syrian Refugee crisis. Citizens and government officials are denying these refugees help in their time of need due to their misplaced discrimination and overall lack of compassion. Articles from websites such as CBS , CNN, and Newsweek have all taken a stance on what America needs to do for Syria, touching on aspects such as the statistical
The refugee crisis the world is facing affects almost every country. More developed countries like the United States aren’t doing enough to help these millions of refugees, or the less developed countries who are doing
Since 2011, Syrian Refugees became a popular topic all over the world, however with recent events this has become an issue that is only growing larger and larger. This cartoon discusses the issue that Syrian refugees have caused in europe and in America. The authors claim is that the opinion that the Republican party, mainly GOP candidate for president, Donald trump, has on this issue is ignorant. The way that the cartoon is set up, it allows the author’s conclusion get through his audience and have the claim clearly stated.
“Of the 12 GOP candidates actually polling, 7 have come out against Syrian refugees outright, 3 want to ‘pause’ their admission, and Jeb Bush and Cruz make special allowances for Christian Syrians” (Time). Bush and Cruz’s call to just allow Christian Syrians in is unfair because Syria is made up primarily of Muslims and the First Amendment of the US Constitution allows for the freedom of religion. It is one of the first rights Americans are given so America cannot discriminate against Muslim refugees. One may argue that the majority of terrorists are Muslims but the terrorist organizations such as ISIS that use their religion to justify their actions are not true worshippers of Islam. Islam is a peaceful religion and extremists are warping the religion. As long as the US properly screens the refugees for possibly threats to American society, the religion of the refugee should not be a factor in determining whether they are admitted or not. Moreover the politicians have been telling the public incorrect information in order to make the risk of terrorism seem worse than it is. Presidential candidate Ben Carson claimed that Obama was allowing the refugees in by way of executive order but that is wrong. Obama submitted a proposal to Congress because it is the duty of the president to do so every year. In terms of the number of refugees, Carson and other political candidates Donald Trump and Carly Fiorina exaggerated. “Trump, Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina repeatedly have claimed that the Obama administration plans to accept anywhere from 100,000 to 250,000 Syrian refugees” (FactCheck.org). Their over exaggerations have caused Americans to be even more wary of allowing the refugees in because they fear that these refugees with take their jobs, raise prices on healthcare, etc.
Imagine going about your everyday life as per usual and then all of a sudden everything is completely disrupted. Terrorists are in your state, your city your life with an intention to hurt you, your friends and your loved ones. It’s a terrifying thought, and most of us would like to think that it is not very likely to happen. On November 13, 2015, the people of Paris were the unfortunate to deal with such an attack. This attack got the support and media coverage of what seemed like everyone. Sadly, what many might not know is that only one day before something similar happened in Beirut, Lebanon. Both the New York Times article by Anne Barnard and The Washington Post article by Brian J Phillips aimed to talk about
Just a few weeks ago the GOP lead house of representatives passed a bill at a 289 to 137 vote to devastatingly hinder if not stop president Obama’s proposal to take in 10,000 Syrian refugees in 2016. Along with this opposition from the house the GOP front runners for president Donald Trump and Ben Carson have strongly voiced their opposition to taking in of the refugees,
One position held by mainly Republicans is denying the stay of the refugees due to fear of terrorist disguising themselves as refugees. Doug Collins, a Republican U.S Representative from Georgia stated “Despite what the Administration wants you to believe, refugees don’t seek safe haven because of our welfare benefits. It is because we don’t negotiate with terrorists. It is because we recognize our first and greatest responsibility is the life and liberty
This issue was chosen due to its scope. The Syrian refugee crisis is among a list of issues that will not only shape the world in 2016 but also dominate news outlets in upcoming years. Because of the despairing situation, many governments are struggling to find ways to handle the rush of individuals seeking asylum, for the fact that it seems the crisis is worsening. In addition, the media coverage on the topic sparked my interest and led me to research information because I had no idea what was occurring and the detriment of the issue.
On September of 2015, the image of 3-year-old Aylan Kurdi went viral. “The toddler’s lifeless body on a Turkish beach had reverberated across the globe” (Parkinson & George-Cosh, 2015). Aylan’s family had “fled the brutal civil war in their native Syria and only attempted the boat crossing after Canada denied their application of admission as refugees. The image led to an astonishing outpouring of support for Syrian refugees” (Hein & Niazi, 2016). President accepted 10,000 Syrian refugees.” (Hein & Niazi, 2016). But “In the US, the governors of 31 of 50 states issued orders to prevent the resettlement of Syrian refugees and by a vote of 289 to 137 the US House of Representatives approved legislation to ban the admissions of all Syrian and Iraqi refugees” (Hein & Niazi, 2016).
Since 2011, Syria has been engaged in a Civil War with protestors against the government and members of the extremist group ISIS, and approximately 7.6 million people have been displaced from their homes (usnews.com 2015). As the conflict destroys more homes and livelihoods each year, an increasing number of civilians have been forced to leave Syria and try to find safety elsewhere. Already a contentious issue, the Syrian refugee crisis has awakened tensions, both economic and social as debate erupts over what to do with the refugees. In response to the crisis, while some countries like Germany have pledged to help the refugees, (New Statesman 2015 1) only 2,340 have been admitted. Clearly, more needs to be done in order to help the refugees. Although there are economic and population concerns to be considered, the humanitarian conflict that faces the refugees and solutions already available are reason enough for Europe to increase the numbers of Syrian refugees allowed in.
This paper will examine the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, perpetrated by the self-proclaimed Islamic State. This paper will analyze and discuss the implications that the events in Paris will have on the international community’s course of action on the current turmoil in Syria and Iraq. As a result of this further analysis, this paper argues three main points. First, the severity of the attack will demand a fundamental shift in the level of aggressiveness that Western powers are willing to show against a pseudo-state actor like ISIS. Second, France’s recent invocation of the Mutual Defense clause of the European Union Constitution signals a possible shift in the role of large scale international organizations in their treatment of member states. Finally, this paper will argue that these attacks signal a negative shift in the international debate over resolving the humanitarian crisis in Syria, resulting in stricter immigration policies within Western countries.
