Tailored Adaptive Personality Test

Personality, like most core Psychology subjects, is difficult to define. Personality is essentially the science of describing and understanding people. No two people are the same; even identical twins will tell you that they are very different to their identical counterpart. There are some who are anxious and there are those who are risk-takers. There are some who are carefree while there are those who are highly-strung and there are those who are over-confident while some are just plain shy. It is this issue of differences that are fundamental to the study and examination of personality.

The tests related with personality intrigue people because human personality is a very curious topic for people. Everyone wants to know about their personality and the internet has become the easiest method to access any personality test that claims to solve your queries about your own. People take interest into these tests and end up being fooled by some vague claims made by a machine that has all remarks and conclusions fitted in it. I was no exception to it when I decided to take a personality test and get included in the list of those people who got duped by such tests.

Personality tests are beyond easy to find these days. All it takes is a few clicks from your keyboard and google will present you with thousands, if not millions of personality quizzes. However, some tests happen to be more legitimate than others. Recently, I took one such test at the Career Center at Eastern Florida State College. My results were sometimes correct, but seemed to be slightly off at other times. I did really enjoy taking a test built in this format though.

Personality is looked at everyday purposely and accidently. Whether you are judging how your new professor for the semester will be, or if you are studying your best friend for a project, personality is studied abundantly. While there are many ways to define personality, there is not a worldwide definition around. Personality is the unique combination of patterns that influence behavior, thought, motivation, and emotion in a human being (boundless.com). That is one of many ways of defining personality. When examining personality, there are four main approachable theories including: The Psychodynamic Approach, The Trait Approach, The Social-Cognitive Approach, and The Humanistic Approach.

This paper introduces the overview of personality assessment approaches in use currently in society. It proceeds to review the big five personality measures, its validity in prediction of personality types (Archer, 2011). The topic on MIPS questionnaires use in personality measurements and scoring methods used by the system is reviewed. Aspects on the social desirability trait and the distortion produced in responses to evaluation questionnaires, being a significant part of the problems in personality assessment is examined. Social desirability does not have an influence on the predictive validity of personality assessments. It is not related to performance in the job. Various strategies used for reduction of social desirability have been studied. The various tools used in assessments are recapitulated including some methodological aspects (Weiner, 2009). Cultural aspects in evaluation of personality discussed are touched upon. Two case studies are used to show the real life situation of personality assessment.

The personality self-assessment contained three different assessments that assess different components of your personality, such as your personality profile, what motivates you, and acquired needs. It is important to think about this information because knowing what your personality profile is, what motivates you, and what your acquired needs are will help me as I prepare for the workplace. Knowing this information will help me, as personality type contributes to how you communicate with others in the workplace, as well as how I will deal with conflict.

However, there is no single definition agreed by most researchers. They do have their own view of defining “personality” as they believe that human personality is not easily defined (Carducci, 2009). According to Shultz and Shultz (2009) the reason a simplified description is unable to explain all is because humans are too complex. Although there are many definitions have been offered, none of them is universally accepted.

Personality is like a big stew mixed with emotions, behaviors, and patterns of thought that truly define a person. Personality Psychology is the study of these different patterns among a group of people or culture. The studies of psychology started from Hippocrates’ theory that argues that personality traits are based on four different sections. This heavily influenced modern personality psychology. Three important psychologists helped shape the way humans define the term personality.
