Nations such as Japan and China had viewed the island of Taiwan as a resource and a collateral component in their immense empires ever since their knowledge of its existence in mid 1400s. The most prominent period in Taiwanese history began after World War II, with the beginning of the Cold War. It was then that Taiwan’s native government was completely dominated by China, demolishing the island’s independence which they would slowly gain back over the next few centuries. The formation of the Relations Act with the United States in 1979 began a process that led to Taiwan’s political separation from China in 1987, establishing a democratic government along with a gain of military support from the West.

Chiang Kai-shek was the leader of the Republic of China who had been governing Taiwan under martial law, however after his death in 1975, his son, Chiang Ching-kuo succeeded him and made political shifts to a more democratic system. (“Taiwan”) The most democratic element of Chiang’s new system was the elections that were held to replace members of the National Assembly, an important part of the Republic of China’s government in Taiwan, who were dying. (“Taiwan”) This was incredibly significant because while it was a large democratic step, it was also the first time native Taiwanese were able to participate in their government, eventually resulting in a majority of Taiwanese born and a mainority of Chinese governing Taiwan. The Taiwanese government became even more native after Chiang Ching-kuo ended martial law and passed away in 1987, beginning the presidency of Li Teng-hui took office “as the first native-born Taiwanese to govern the republic” in 1988. (“Taiwan”) This step allowed native Taiwanese to completely dominate their nation’s government. Simultaneous, new political groups were being formed, the most notable being the Democratic Progressive Party. Figure 1 below is a photograph from the party’s formation in 1986, though the government didn’t legalize political parties until a year
On January 13, 1999, a girl named Hae Min Lee disappeared. She was a senior at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County in Maryland. Born in South Korea, Hae Min Lee migrated to the United States along with her mother and brother to live with her grandparents. She played field hockey and lacrosse. At age 18, Hae Min Lee was reported missing by her family after she was supposed to pick up her little cousin from kindergarten around 3:15 PM and drop her home, but she never showed up. Weeks later on February 1, an anonymous call was made to the Baltimore County Police suggesting that Adnan Syed, Hae’s ex-boyfriend was responsible for her death. The investigation showed that although Lee had been dating Syed for the past year, they had recently broken up. Furthering
After the government of People’s Republic of China (PRC) came in power, this form of rebellion gradually shifts to the indisposition to being governed by Mainland China. This is the main historical factor behind Taiwan’s attitude towards different regimes, and it clearly states that Taiwan has the right to be autonomous, but the actualization of becoming autonomous may not be their best choice.
In the late 19th century, the wave of imperialism touched the shores of Taiwan. The island became a colony of Japan and remained under Japanese rule for 50 years, during which time it evolved from a traditional society into a modern society. At the end of World War II in 1945, Taiwan was liberated from colonial rule. Since then, the island has experienced an economic miracle and introduced political democracy achievements that have attracted the world's attention.
Between the years of 1927 and 1949 in China two warring sides, China’s Communist Party and China’s Nationalist Party, clashed. Although the two parties had previously worked together in the United Front against Japan when Japan tried to invade, their temporary alliance was dropped as soon as the invasion was over. Halting only for a brief period when Japan attempted to invade a second time in 1936 to form the Second United Front, the two parties resumed fighting after the invasion was over in 1945, and only stopped hostilities when the Communist party drove out the Nationalist party to Taiwan and other islands. This war brought China into a new era under a communist government, the People’s Republic of China. Massive reform and change would
The Soviet Union was not the only nation in the postwar era to enact a communist platform. Mao-Tse-Tung and the communists drove Chiang-Kai-Shek’s Nationalists to Taiwan from mainland China. The United Nations did not admit this government until October 25, 1971 and the United States did not recognize the People’s Republic of China until 1979.
There are many mysterious and unknowns in the death of Hae Min Lee. There are many different people who could be looked at as a suspect. However the jury decided that one kid by the name of Adnan Syed, the ex boyfriend of Hae, was responsible for her death. I am going to explain why I think the Jury was incorrect, and did not have enough evidence to convict Adnan for the death of Hae Min Lee.
The murder of Hae Min Lee was a mind twisting case. When listening to the podcast, you are left to wonder about who is guilty and who is innocent. With all of the evidence in this case, I am left to believe Adnan Syed is innocent. There are many facts that lead people to believe that he is guilty. However, some of the evidence doesn’t line up. Adnan has an alibi, the crime doesn’t fit the time frame that he had, and Jay had inconsistencies in his stories about Adnan, so the question is was he actually telling the truth. Adnan doesn’t remember very much about the day of Hae’s murder, and if he actually did commit the crime, you would remember that day perfectly.
Is adnan syed the killer of the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee? Hae Min Lee was killed one afternoon after school and her body was left in leakin park. Adnan and Hae just broke up so he would be an easy suspect because he would know her schedule best and he would know how to hide it. Her body was left in Leakin park Mr.S found her body a while after being missing for a week and called 911 . I feel Adnan Syed is innocent in all of the cases against Adnan there is a missing piece to all of the stories. First The motive was too easy they thought so they broke up that could be the reason why he killed her because he was so full of rage and sadness. This motive seems as though he had no other reason for killing her, it is just that two unfortunate events happened so close the motive seems
China has been in a state of revolution and reform since the Sino-Japanese war of 1895. As a result of Japan’s victory over Russia in 1905, China’s constitutional reform movement gathered momentum. This forced the Manchu government by public opinion to make gestures of preparation for a constitutional government, an act to which reformers in exile responded enthusiastically by establishing a Political Participation Society (Cheng-wen-she) (1, pg.84).

After the lost of the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), China was forced to resect Taiwan and Penghu to Japan, by signing the “Treaty of Shimonoseki”. Since then, Japan had ruled Taiwan for 50 years (1895-1945). After Japan occupied Taiwan, Japan used modern education and economic construction to assimilate Taiwanese. During the Japanese ruling period, Goto Shinpei was the historical figure that worth mentioning. People defined him as the most influential Japanese official in the modernization of Taiwan. Goto Shinpei had created a unique ruling way. In his idea, the most efficient way of ruling was to understand their society first. He claimed that Japanese officials have to understand Taiwan’s society, and its people and government first,
In this condition, the political party that gave birth to Taiwan, the Guomindang or GMD was formed and so was the ruling
In 1949 Mao Zedong and his Communist Party defeated Chiang Kai-shek and his National Party for control over China. While Mao controlled China until his death in 1976, Kai-shek and his followers fled where and established a new government?
After a bitter civil war (1946-1949), which faced the major Chinese parties Kuomintang and CCP, Kuomintang’s defeat, evidenced with Chiang’s and 200.000 people´s fled to Formosa, Mao Zedong (1893-1976), born in Shoshan, Hunan, proclaimed the new People´s Republic of China with himself as both Chairman of the CCP and President of the republic in October 1949. How did the under numbered and weak CCP, founded by the same person in 1921 manage to survive several extermination campaigns and re-organize the party to win the civil war, crushing opposition and establish the Chinese
The main aspiration of the Kuomintang (KMT) officials of enacting the Martial Law was that they wanted Taiwan to become bastion for the future recovery of mainland People’s Republic of China (Chao and Myers, 2000: 387). If the communist regime would ever lose support and
